Buthus quinquestriatus libycus was described by Birula (1908) from the Libyan Desert, based on a subadult male specimen. This taxon was later synonymized with Leiurus quinquestriatus (Ehrenberg, 1828) by Vachon (1949). In this study, we re-evaluate this taxon and recognize it as Leiurus libycus (Birula, 1908), stat. n., providing a redescription based on the holotype. The type locality of this species is clarified as western Egypt (between Alexandria and Fayum). We synonymize Leiurus aegyptiacus Lourenço & El-Hennawy, 2021 with L. libycus, stat. n., syn. n.

Background/Objectives: Anthocyanin (ACN)-rich foods may support gut health by modulating the microbiome and reducing inflammation, potentially lowering the risk of colitis-associated colorectal cancer. However, the dynamic response of the gut microbiome to ACN-rich diets is not well characterized, including in the context of structural and compositional differences among ACN-containing foods. This study examined the temporal response of the mouse gut microbiome to dietary ACNs, focusing on the impact of structural variation. We hypothesized that microbiome shifts would occur rapidly but require sustained dietary ACN intake to persist. Methods: C57BL/6J mice were fed the total Western diet (TWD) supplemented with freeze-dried …

Diversity And Habitat Use Of Bats In Modified Suburban Landscapes, Brittany Morgera
Biology Presentations
Bats occupy critical ecological niches and perform important ecosystem services like controlling insect populations. However, humans have altered bat habitat substantially, resulting in the reduction of bat populations. The goals of this research are to assess bat diversity and habitat use across different levels of suburban habitat modification. To accomplish this, we deployed passive acoustic recorders at twelve locations with varying human impact in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. In accordance with The North American Bat Monitoring Program’s standards, acoustic analysis software was used to identify bat species. Manual identification methods from The Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative were used to verify these …

Passive Integrated Transponders: An Effective Marking Technique For Individual Identification Of Anaxyrus Fowleri?, Emily Leprell
Honors College Theses
With the rise of fungal disease such as Chytridiomycosis, known as chytrid, causing massive population declines for many species of frogs and toads (order Anura), specific conservation strategies are needed now more than ever. In many cases, being able to mark and identify individuals is a necessary step in developing an effective conservation plan. Individual identification allows researchers to obtain accurate population estimates, which are needed to test the progress and validity of conservation management decisions. However, due to their unique life history, including cutaneous respiration and a dichotomous lifestyle, anurans are among the most difficult wildlife species to …

The raw dog food movement has become increasingly popular among the dog owner community, gaining attention primarily on social media platforms. This article discusses the motivations, ethics, and proper food safety involved in feeding canines raw meat. Despite common belief, dogs have deviating needs from their wolf ancestors, therefore, while feeding a raw meat diet looks more “natural” there are serious unintended consequences of improperly utilizing raw meat. This article takes a comprehensive look into what the benefits and drawbacks of raw feeding may be, how to be responsible if choosing to convert to the raw feed method, and overall …

Homeostasis is essential for the health and development of all organisms, serving as a universal defense mechanism that ensures the stability of physiological processes faced with external and internal stimuli in the form of health challenges (Archana et al., 2017). Maintaining homeostasis is crucial for our health, as it helps keep the body's internal balance. However, this delicate equilibrium is challenged by various environmental factors, such as diet, exposure to chemicals, and fluctuations in temperature (Collier et al., 2017). These disruptions can lead to dysfunction in cellular processes, particularly affecting the production and regulation of proteins vital for biological functions. …

Drinking Behavior And Performance In Neonatal Swine, Yasmine Taylor
Honors Theses
This behavioral study analyzes the relationship between water intake and growth performance in pre-weaned piglets. Growth is paramount in pork production, and maximizing growth in weaned piglets has been thoroughly researched. However, one crucial aspect of growth is often overlooked: water, especially in neonatal piglets. Therefore, this study aimed to determine if there is a positive relationship between water intake and performance in pre-weaned piglets by observing different behaviors. Weights were recorded at birth, after 7-10 days, and at weaning. Piglets were observed three times a day, in the morning, afternoon, and evening, for 21 days via scan sampling. Observation …

Ammonia Production From Cattle At The Walter C. Todd Agricultural Research Center, Sydney Cunningham, Elizabeth Smith, Rachel Nelson, Brayden Wagner
Undergraduate Research Conference
The Walter C. Todd Agricultural Research Center cattle pen was tested to measure the ammonia emission rates produced by cattle. Samples were collected from six testing locations. Eighteen samples were taken across three days of testing, in 8-hour increments. We found that small-scale cattle in open-air pens produce minimal amounts of ammonia that are not a concern for air quality. Ammonia was detectable in small quantities in the testing sites adjacent to the cattle and not in locations more than 0.1 miles away.

Background/Objectives: Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) significantly impedes swine production due to rapid genetic variation and suppression of antiviral interferon (IFN) responses, leading to ineffective immunity. To address this, we developed IFNmix, a replication-competent PRRSV modified live vaccine (MLV) candidate co-expressing three Type I IFN subclasses (IFNα, IFNβ, IFNδ) to enhance antiviral immunity. Methods: In two independent in vivo experiments, we compared the protection of IFNmix and a commercial PRRSV MLV vaccine during challenge with a virulent PRRSV strain. Clinical signs, antibody and cytokine production, viral replication, and lung pathology in IFNmix-vaccinated pigs were compared to those of …

Advantages, Disadvantages, And Factors Influencing The Reproductive Performance Of Gilts And Sows Raised In Gestational Group Housing And Free-Farrowing Systems, Natchanon Dumniem Dr., Thomas D. Parsons, Padet Tummaruk
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
In the modern global pig industry, there is a growing interest in animal-friendly agriculture, encouraging farmers to prioritize humane practices and meet the welfare needs of their animals. In developed countries, consumers are increasingly concerned about animal welfare, particularly regarding pigs as social animals, advocating for their housing in groups that reflect their natural behaviors in the wild. There is significant societal pressure to eliminate the use of crate systems, which cause discomfort to animals in commercial farming. In these systems, breeding females are often restricted in movement throughout the reproductive cycle. As a result, alternative husbandry and housing systems …

Adaptation Of Influenza A Virus Strains A/Anhui/1/2013 (H7n9) And A/Shanghai/1/2013 (H7n9) For Development Of Effective Mouse Models, Spencer Mullen
Student Research Symposium
Introduction
Animal models are key to the research and development of antiviral interventions. Two strains of low-pathogenic avian influenza virus, A/Anhui/1/2013 and A/Shanghai/1/2013 (H7N9), isolated from a 2013 outbreak in China and acquired by USU’s Institute for Antiviral Research from the CDC, are the subject of this project.
Developing antiviral interventions against Influenza A H7N9 is essential because:
• Global outbreaks have caused high mortality among bird and human populations since 2013.[1]
• Low-pathogenic avian flu viruses can mutate to become highly pathogenic.[2]
• No current prophylactic or therapeutic human interventions exist.[3]

The National Cancer Institute reports colorectal cancer as the leading cause of cancer death for individuals under 50 in the United States (American Cancer Society). These rates continue to rise with poor diet, microbiome dysbiosis, and gut inflammation being the primary drivers.
Our lab performs nutrient- intervention studies on DSS/AOM colitis-induced mouse models fed the total Western diet, reflective of the average American’s diet. A poor diet promotes gut microbiome dysbiosis and subsequent colitis, ultimately yielding colon cancer. We seek to understand how the introduction of a bioactive compound may lessen or promote these effects in in vivo mouse models. …

Exercise And Its Effect On The Nad Content Of Tissues In Niacin Deficient Mice With Free Choice Running Wheels, Stellaluna Star
Student Research Symposium
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) content of tissues decreases over time during aging. In our study, we determine if physical exercise has an effect on the NAD content in tissues of transgenic mice that were NAD- deficient because of vitamin B3-free diet. The underlying hypothesis of this study is that exercise can prevent NAD decline and maintain higher level of NAD in tissue. A potential impact of this study is that exercise could be used to lengthen healthspan compared to individuals not participating in any physical exercise.

Conventional poultry management techniques are failing to meet increased demand for poultry products as the population continues to grow. As a result, this issue has become a major concern for small-scale farmers, particularly those in low-income areas, in terms of food security. One of the main reasons for this is that the farmers rely on intensive farming methods which are inefficient for automating daily poultry operations. However, intensive farming methods pose major environmental concerns to ecosystems and poultry health. Also, the environmental conditions, welfare, and productivity of poultry operations may be harmed by the global climate crisis and poultry waste …

The STAT2 gene encodes a protein called Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 2. This protein is a part of the STAT family of transcription factors, which are involved in mediating cellular responses to various cytokines and growth factors, particularly those related to the immune response. Here, we established a successful procedure for creating a STAT2 knock-out (KO) Rat that can be used for more accurate disease testing of serious human ailments such as Lupus, Polio, Herpes, RSV, and even cancer.
