The Fortifications At San Marcos De Apalache, Mark F. Boyd
The Fortifications At San Marcos De Apalache, Mark F. Boyd
Florida Historical Quarterly
The region of Apalache and of its bay on the Gulf coast seem to have been ignored by the Spaniards following the departure of De Soto from this vicinity after overwintering here in 1539-40. Certainly we are not aware of its further mention in available records until the arrival of the Christianizing Franciscan fathers in 1633, who probably, as did De Soto, came overland,, but in the latter instance from St. Augustine.

East Florida Seminary - Micanopy, C. L. Crow
East Florida Seminary - Micanopy, C. L. Crow
Florida Historical Quarterly
For some eight years there existed in Florida, less than thirty miles apart, two schools founded at approximately the same time and bearing similar names: the one, “East Florida State Seminary, located in Ocala and controlled by the State; the other, “East Florida Seminary”, established in Micanopy and, at least nominally, under the care of the Florida Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. This Conference, it may be said in passing, extended at the time from Key West to Albany and from the Atlantic to Apalachicola, thus covering all Middle and East Florida and that part of Georgia lying …

William Panton, Marie Taylor Greenslade
William Panton, Marie Taylor Greenslade
Florida Historical Quarterly
Much has been written of William Panton and his connection with the Floridas, but even so, in justice to him, too little; for, with few exceptions, most references and accounts of him have appeared in historical writings which are unsympathetic, if not antipathetic, toward the regime under which he lived and the interests he represented. There exists available material in the form of previously unpublished papers and letters of the trading house of Panton, Leslie & Company, which fills out the picture of Panton, enhances his stature, and helps to correct many inaccuracies in factual statement and estimation of character.
The First American Road In Florida: Papers Relating To The Survey And Construction Of The Pensacola-St. Augustine Highway, Part I, Mark F. Boyd
Florida Historical Quarterly
In these days of paved highways and of swift private transportation, accounts of early efforts to improve communications have a great interest. After American occupation of the territory of Florida, the inaccessibility of the only centers of population to each other soon attracted interest. This resulted in the projection and construction of the old Pensacola-St. Augustine highway, today an abandoned and almost forgotten route across the state, but interesting as the first instance of American road construction in Florida, as well as the fact that the eastern half would appear to follow one of the early Spanish routes from St. …
History Of Juan Ponce De Leon's Voyages To Florida, T. Frederick Davis
History Of Juan Ponce De Leon's Voyages To Florida, T. Frederick Davis
Florida Historical Quarterly
On that day between the 2nd and 8th of April, 1513, when Juan Ponce de Leon stepped from his landing boat upon the sandy shore of Florida he opened the positive history of the white man within the limits of the present United States. Since then, through the centuries, his name has been perpetuated by history and is better known today than any of the early explorers with the single exception of Columbus. But the circumstances of his discovery of Florida are seldom related with historical accuracy, while those of his second voyage to colonize Florida are scarcely known at …
Print Culture, Digital Culture, Poetics And Hermeneutics: Discussion With J. Hillis Miller, Liyuan Zhu
Print Culture, Digital Culture, Poetics And Hermeneutics: Discussion With J. Hillis Miller, Liyuan Zhu
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This paper is a response to Hillis Miller’s query on the author’s essay “Hillis Miller on the End of Literature.” The author basically agrees with Miller’s view on the shift from print culture to digital culture, explaining the special cultural context under which Chinese scholars emphasize the visual turn. Based on the rapid development of Chinese online literature, the author points out that print culture does not rival but coexists with digital culture. On the other hand, drawing on Aristotle’s Poetics and insights of several leading figures of contemporary hermeneutics, the author contends that Miller’s dichotomy of poetics (form) and …
China Question Of Us-American Imagism, Qingben Li
China Question Of Us-American Imagism, Qingben Li
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This paper investigates first the influences of ancient Chinese culture on Ezra Pound, and then Pound’s influence on the New Culture Movement of modern China (1917). It is a kind of circular journey of literary texts and theories from ancient China to the West and then back to China. This journey, or “circle model,” involves textual appropriation, variation, transformation and misunderstanding in every stage.
Western Theory And Historical Studies Of Chinese Literary Criticism, Zhirong Zhu
Western Theory And Historical Studies Of Chinese Literary Criticism, Zhirong Zhu
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This paper examines the formation of modern historical studies of classical Chinese literary criticism in terms of its interaction with and transformation of western theory. The discipline emerged during the eastward movement of Western ideas in the early twentieth century, promoting the “scientific study” of classical Chinese learning, and instituting curriculum and textbooks in Chinese universities. The reception of Western concepts of “literature” and “literary criticism” in the early twentieth century, largely through Japan, laid the very foundation of historical studies of classical Chinese literary criticism as an independent subject of study. This paper argues that when adopting Western methods …
The Chuanyue (Traversing) Of Western Cultural Industry Theories In China, Hui Li, Naihai Zhai
The Chuanyue (Traversing) Of Western Cultural Industry Theories In China, Hui Li, Naihai Zhai
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This paper discusses the reception and transformation of western theories of Culture Industry in China during the Reform Era (1978-present). It proposes the term 穿越 (chuanyue, traverse), rather than communication or traveling theory, in order to probe into the complexity of the interaction, modification and transformation of western theories of Culture Industry and creative industries in China. The paper focuses on 1) issues of time lag or disjunction, in that it took more than half a century for the critique of Culture Industry to enter China; 2) divergent interpretations of Culture Industry with a strong critical edge of …
Cinematic Representation Of Ethnic Minorities In Prc And Postcolonialism, Xinyu Lu
Cinematic Representation Of Ethnic Minorities In Prc And Postcolonialism, Xinyu Lu
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This paper explores the notions of “Sinophone” and “Chinese-language cinema” under the rubrics of postcolonialism in Chinese film studies both in China and elsewhere around the world. The paper argues that these postcolonial-inspired notions misconstrue Chinese national identity building as imperialist/colonialist endeavours, and dichotomize Han and Chinese ethnic minorities. The paper offers its counterargument by examining cinematic practices of people’s cinema, minority nationality films and native-language films in the PRC.
“Western Marxism” In Mao’S China, Jun Zeng, Yichen Wang
“Western Marxism” In Mao’S China, Jun Zeng, Yichen Wang
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
China’s reception of “Western Marxism” is a critical part of the global history of Marxism. This paper examines three aspects of the reception of Western Marxism in literary and art criticism during the early years of Mao’s China (1949-65): the Western Marxist critique of surrealism, debates over Marx’s Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844, and Sartrean existentialism and Western Marxism. The impacts of Western Marxist literary thought upon Chinese literary studies during the early years of the PRC are discussed, along with the extensive influx of Western Marxism that began in the reform era of post-Mao China (1978- ) …

To Reach The Unreachable Stars: Reexamining The Shared Arthurian Vision Of C. S. Lewis's Science Fiction Trilogy And Raymond Chandler's Marlowe Novels, Hollis Thompson
To Reach The Unreachable Stars: Reexamining The Shared Arthurian Vision Of C. S. Lewis's Science Fiction Trilogy And Raymond Chandler's Marlowe Novels, Hollis Thompson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although Raymond Chandler and C. S. Lewis seem to be a rather strange pairing, the ways in which they both borrow from Arthurian literature and use the myth to speak to their cultural moment are strikingly similar. Following T. S. Eliot’s use of the Grail quest in The Waste Land (which set a standard for the use of such material in Modern literature), these authors use Arthurian elements as a means of exposing hidden connections between the fragments of the literary past and the present within Chandler’s Marlowe novels and Lewis’s science fiction trilogy. Both men present Western identity as …
A Guiding Force, Jessica Palmer
A Guiding Force, Jessica Palmer
Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works
In this paper, I will be addressing the main factors which influenced Bruce Springsteen’s career and songwriting, specifically regarding interpersonal relationships the singer has had and how that is evident in his work thus far. I will be relating that concept to his latest album release, “Letter to You” by analyzing track by track and attempting to find that common thread of connection that seems to speak so well to him and his audience.

A Topographical Memoir On East And West Florida With Itineraries (Concluded), Hugh Young
A Topographical Memoir On East And West Florida With Itineraries (Concluded), Hugh Young
Florida Historical Quarterly
This part of the report contains sketches of the routes of the Army from Hartford, Georgia to Fort Scott, and thence through east and west Florida to Fort Montgomery in the Alabama territory with hints for the construction and improvement of roads through the more difficult parts of the country. It was thought best to give the Itineraries the last. place in the report, as the particular description of the routes is made more intelligible and satisfactory by the general account of the country (p. 323) which preceded it.
The Schooner Emperor: An Incident Of The Illegal Slave Trade In Florida, Dorothy Dodd
The Schooner Emperor: An Incident Of The Illegal Slave Trade In Florida, Dorothy Dodd
Florida Historical Quarterly
The story of the African slave trade after its prohibition in 1808 is one which, because of the illicit nature of the trade, can never be fully known. In Florida, as in other Southern states, however, occasional hints of this subterranean traffic found their way into records which have been preserved. A record, fuller than most, found in the archives of the Florida Supreme Court as the case of the United States vs. the Schooner Emperor, may be taken as a fair illustration of the methods employed in the slave trade, when entered into upon a small scale, and of …

The Manufacture Of Cotton In Florida Before And During The Civil War, Dorothy Dodd
The Manufacture Of Cotton In Florida Before And During The Civil War, Dorothy Dodd
Florida Historical Quarterly
The fluctuating price of cotton in the 1840’s caused the cotton planters of Florida, like their brethren in other parts of the South, to consider ways in which they might stabilize the price of their staple crop in order to stave off economic ruin. 1 Numerous proposals were made to this end, 2 but none met with more widespread response throughout the South than that. of bringing the cotton mill to the cotton field by establishing cotton manufactories throughout the cotton producing regions.

Apalachee During The Brisih Occupation, R. E. Pittman
Apalachee During The Brisih Occupation, R. E. Pittman
Florida Historical Quarterly
According to Prof. F. H. Hodder, in the introduction to his reprint of Pittman’s work entitled “The Present State of the European Settlements on the Mississippi,” there are but few available biographical data pertaining to Pittman. Hodder there presents such information as he was able to collect. Apparently Pittman must have accompanied the first British detachment occupying Florida, he states that he “resided four years as an engineer in those parts” and it is known that he left towards the close of 1768. Apparently during 1767 he was occupied in making surveys in different parts of West Florida, as records …
