This contract (DACA 63-77-6-0081) is part of an overall Environmental Impact Statement required by the National Environmental Policy Act of 1959, implementing Department of Defense Directive 6050.1 and Army Regulation AR 200-1.

Archaeological And Historical Investigations In The Arciniega Street Area, Downtown San Antonio Texas, Paul R. Katz

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Early in 1976 the City of San Antonio Department of Planning and Community Development requested that the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, consider undertaking archaeological and historical investigations in the Arciniega Street area of downtown San Antonio. Sale of City-owner property--including all of New City Block (NCB) 901 and portions of NCB l55--was pending, and the Planning Department was desirous of assessing the nature and degree of cultural resources prior to completing the transaction. The proposed construction of a multi-story luxury hotel on the property would require subsurface archaeological excavations, and the property's inclusion …

Virginia Sorensen, L L. Lee, Sylvia B. Lee Jan 1978

Virginia Sorensen, L L. Lee, Sylvia B. Lee

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

“If you burrow for roots, it was the fault of my grandmother,” the protagonist of Virginia Sorensen’s novel The Man with the Key remarks. And although we must ignore the half-ironic reference to a fault—and remind ourselves that an author’s characters are not the author—this metaphor is an exact image of Virginia Sorensen’s world and of her works. Sorensen has published eight novels, most of them about the American West, as well as a number of short stories and a group of children’s books. Her roots are the very essence of almost all, and certainly of the best, of her …

The Hollow Of Echoes, Kathleen Danker, Felix White Sr. Jan 1978

The Hollow Of Echoes, Kathleen Danker, Felix White Sr.

Department of English: Faculty Publications

The Hollow of Echoes is the result of collaboration between Mr. Felix White, Sr. and myself. Mr. White, who resides in Winnebago, Nebraska, is knowledgeable in many areas of traditional Winnebago culture including language, history, legends and law. During the spring of 1973, he recounted to me a number of Winnebago legends of which I made recordings. I have incorporated these legends into a fictional account of a present-day Winnebago grandfather using the stories to instruct his grandchildren in traditional ways of viewing situations they encounter in their daily lives. Almost all of the views of the grandfather in the …

Alfred Henry Lewis, Abe C. Ravitz Jan 1978

Alfred Henry Lewis, Abe C. Ravitz

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

He was a cowboy and a lawyer, a journalist and a novelist. At ease passing the time of day with drifters in front of Melinda's House of Call at Watrous (Mora County) in the sparse territory of New Mexico or debating socio-economic philosophy with sophisticated Tammany politicians just outside City Hall in New York, Alfred Henry Lewis—Western regionalist and Eastern muckraker—was enchanted by America’s land of legend and myth beyond the frontier, and he forever glanced backward with nostalgia at his “pampas years,” when he roved "for many moons" between “the Canadian in the Panhandle and the Gila in Arizona.” …

Depiction Of Blacks In The Works Of Ernest Hemingway, Sheila Marie Foor Jan 1978

Depiction Of Blacks In The Works Of Ernest Hemingway, Sheila Marie Foor

Masters Theses

Ernest Hemingway, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954, is one of America's outstanding literary figures. Criticism of his work has been voluminous--ranging from bitterly derogative to superlative--with most of it focusing upon the famous 'Hemingway code hero,' upon his crisp, concise writing style, and upon his much-publicized personal life.

One example of negative assessment by critics is the one concerning black portraiture in Hemingway's fiction. However, no work deals exclusively with this aspect of his writing. The purpose of this thesis is, first, to present a general discussion on the nature of prejudice and examination of black …

L. Frank Baum And The Technology Of Love, Robert Bruce Goble Jan 1978

L. Frank Baum And The Technology Of Love, Robert Bruce Goble

Masters Theses

L. Frank Baum, throughout his books of fantasy, especially the Oz series, gradually resolves the conflict of pastoralism and technology by developing a technology managed by love. Baum uses magic as a representation of both pastoralism and technology. Fairy magic, the capacity for love, represents pastoralism, and ritual magic, the capacity for good or evil depending upon who wields it, represents technology. Baum deals with the ways in which ritual magic or technology can be misused through selfishness and ignorance and points out how destruction can be avoided if technology were managed by not greed for power and money but …

Synthesis In Hemingway: From Deep Pessimism Toward Hope In Selected Hemingway Short Stories, John D. Hussey Dec 1977

Synthesis In Hemingway: From Deep Pessimism Toward Hope In Selected Hemingway Short Stories, John D. Hussey

American Studies ETDs

Hemingway’s early short stories, In Our Time, Men Without Women, his early novel, The Sun Also Rises, and his later novel, The Old Man and the Sea, all fit into a recurrent American literary and philosophic canon, the confrontation with Nothingness. First, this paper explains what is meant by the experience or confrontation with Nothingness. Second, the paper attempts to draw comparisons between Hemingway’s experiences with Nothingness and that experience as it shows in five other American writers, specifically Hawthorne, Melville, Twain, Salinger, and Wolfe. Third, this paper attempts to make clear the casual relationship in Hemingway’s work between various …

The Masterless Society: Observations On American Democracy By Alexis De Tocqueville, James Tyrie Jr. Dec 1977

The Masterless Society: Observations On American Democracy By Alexis De Tocqueville, James Tyrie Jr.

Government Theses

French political theorist Alexis de Tocqueville’s views concerning American democracy were examined in order to discern key aspects of democratic thought and practice in America. Tocqueville found certain fundamental premises such as individual freedom and “equality of conditions” at the base of democracy in America. From these basic premises come several paradoxical results, namely the masterless society, economic materialism and “tyranny of the majority.” These paradoxes are controlled by safeguards of associations, the press and the judiciary within the system. It was found that Tocqueville’s detachment and foresight give his thought greater meaning than that of many contemporary social and …

Redefining Women, Hollis Louise Elkins Jul 1977

Redefining Women, Hollis Louise Elkins

American Studies ETDs

Redefining Women is a study of the position of women in patriarchal culture: their oppression as women in the traditional women's role in patriarchy, the implications of that oppression, women's realization that they are oppressed, and the process of women rejecting the traditional definition and redefining themselves for themselves. Chapter I is an overview of the oppression of women from the beginning of patriarchy to European culture of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The chapter discusses the secular and spiritual persecution of women under patriarchy, with a focus on women in Western culture. Chapter II is a detailed critique of …

A Systems Analysis Of Albuquerque's Rescue Service, Leslie Paul Page Iii Jul 1977

A Systems Analysis Of Albuquerque's Rescue Service, Leslie Paul Page Iii

American Studies ETDs

This research involves a systems analysis of Albuquerque's Rescue Services System. The Rescue Services System transforms the input 11medical emergency11 into an 11emergency met11, the output. To understand this emergency medical services system, four algorithmic procedures are applied. First, the system is defined in terms of how it ought to function, termed its normative state. The system definition is based on defining (1) the four subsystems comprising the Rescue Services System, (2) the basic input and output of each, (3) the primary subsystem elements which interact to produce the desired output, and (4) the subsystem interactions which transform the input …

Obsolescence And The American Knowledge Worker: The Contest Of Employer-Sponsored Continuing Education Programs, John A. Cantwell Jul 1977

Obsolescence And The American Knowledge Worker: The Contest Of Employer-Sponsored Continuing Education Programs, John A. Cantwell

American Studies ETDs

The U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare projects that 1,353,000 higher-education degrees will be awarded in 1977, versus 635,000 in 1964--a 113 per cent increase in only thirteen years. Many of these individuals will become what Peter Drucker, the management theorist, calls "knowledge workers." They will pursue work which involves the creation and marketing of knowledge and ideas rather than the production of goods or delivery of services. The "tools" of the knowledge worker, then, are concepts and skills; unfortunately, in a highly technological society, these concepts and skills change so rapidly they often become obsolete during the work …
