Bret Harte, Patrick Morrow
Bret Harte, Patrick Morrow
Western Writers Series Digital Editions
Bret Harte is well known as the first internationally famous writer of short stories about the West. “The Luck of Roaring Camp,” “The Outcasts of Poker Flat," and “Tennessee’s Partner,” all published in the late 1860's, earned Harte the recognition of the nation's popular audience and approval by Emerson, Lowell, Longfellow, Howells, and other leading literary men of the day. In 1870 Harte, then editor of the San Francisco-based Overland Monthly, published “Plain Language from Truthful James,” better known as “The Heathen Chinee.” Hawked on the street corners, endlessly reprinted, the poem created a national sensation. The Emergence Of The American Aesthetic Statement In The Nineteenth Century:James Jackson Jarves., David A. Holtz
The Emergence Of The American Aesthetic Statement In The Nineteenth Century:James Jackson Jarves., David A. Holtz
American Studies ETDs
This dissertation is an investigation of the later, or art historical and aesthetic writings of James Jackson Jarves with the purpose of showing how Jares was the recipient of the colonial, Federalist and Jacksonian strains of aesthetic thinking of the United States, and how he combined these with contemporary European influences, especially Ruskin, Rio, Lindsay and Jameson to produce the first fully integrated documents on art by an American before American art and aesthetics became predominantly international in their concept and execution. An effort was made to trace the emergence and development of such canons of thought as idealism, pietism, …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
No other population has contributed more to American society and received so little in return."1 Until recently the Mexican-Americans had remained quietly in the background, apparently accepting their station in life with little or no desire to improve it--a "sleeping giant," as some politicians have called this politically potential group. Statistics show that relatively few Mexican-Americans have become acculturated and assimilated into Anglo-American society (See page 9). The great majority have retained their Spanish language and their family traditions, and have remained more or less static in their economic position and isolated from the mainstream of life in the United …
