The Fractured American Dream: From Country Club Living To "Suburban Slum" In Latino Orlando, Simone P. Delerme
Florida Historical Quarterly
One evening in July of 2010, an Internet user who goes by "GinnyFavers" posted a question to the city-data.com forum: "I heard from someone that the Buena Ventura Lakes (BVL) subdivision was a majority to all Hispanic area. Just curious if that's really true? No negative implication intended! -Amanda."1 Twenty-two minutes later "Metrowester" responded. "Yes, BVL is a primarily Hispanic area. Landstar homes was heavily marketed in Puerto Rico several years ago."2 "Metrowester" continued, and spoke favorably about the Publix Sabor supermarket in the area with a deli that serves Cuban coffee, pastries, and roasted pork. He identified himself as …

The Flow Of (Re)Memory In African American And Nubian Egyptian Literature: Morrison, Oddoul, And Mukhtar, Bushra Hashem
The Flow Of (Re)Memory In African American And Nubian Egyptian Literature: Morrison, Oddoul, And Mukhtar, Bushra Hashem
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to define the term rememory, which Toni Morrison coins in her novel Beloved, and explore its interplay with water imagery in the novel and in two Nubian short stories, namely Haggag Oddoul’s “The River People” and Yahya Mukhtar’s “The Nile Bride.” The three narratives have core common features: they centralize water bodies as key sites of events, they depend heavily on the retelling of history and mythology, and they are told predominantly from the perspective of women. How do the writers weave rememory, history, and mythology to produce these narratives? Are they attempting to …
Puritan Patriarchal Construction Of American Sexual Morality And Woman's Worth: A Daughter's Response, Savannah Mather
Puritan Patriarchal Construction Of American Sexual Morality And Woman's Worth: A Daughter's Response, Savannah Mather
Honors Projects
While modern conceptions of Puritanism regard it as an artifact of American history, whose woman-killing theologies are long buried and forgotten, the bible in my father’s closet and the recently leaked Supreme Court draft to overturn Roe. Vs. Wade would argue otherwise. Cotton Mather’s favorite book Ornaments for the Daughters of Zion outlined both the ideals and detriments of the Anglo-American female identity. In this text, white women were taught to absolve themselves of the “nakedness” in dress Puritan settlers associated Indigenous people with. A woman’s ability to align herself to the ideals of chastity determined her own and her …
Sunbelt Schooling: Publics And Politics Of Education Advocacy In Phoenix, Arizona, Matthew Chrisler
Sunbelt Schooling: Publics And Politics Of Education Advocacy In Phoenix, Arizona, Matthew Chrisler
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
For the past forty years, public education in the United States has been the target of both neoliberal and conservative education reforms that have imposed austerity and privatization, set limits on racial, gendered, and sexual citizenship, increased school responsibility for social reproduction, and winnowed visions of public education as both a universal social entitlement and site of participatory democracy. These reforms emerged from, and remain powerfully anchored in, the United States Sunbelt, a crescent of metropolitan suburbs spanning southern California to Florida. This region propelled the conservative revolution in American politics but is also the site of progressive organizing that, …
Fragmentation And Fabulation: Reflexivity And The New Black Documentary, Joanna Lehan
Fragmentation And Fabulation: Reflexivity And The New Black Documentary, Joanna Lehan
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis concerns the photographic representation of Black bodies in new, reflexive documentary forms that have been increasingly produced and exhibited in the midst of America’s renewed discourse on race. Approaching this argument categorically, focused on the themes of fabulation and fragmentation, my task here is to uncover the gaps and overlaps between earlier critiques of the documentary image and more recent discourse on photography and race by exploring the specific methods through which select recent documentary projects embed and expand these critiques.
Fragmentation is a category of production I use to frame a movement of Black photographic artists …
Practicing Abolition: A Digital Roundtable On Abolitionist Pedagogy, Samantha Lilienfeld
Practicing Abolition: A Digital Roundtable On Abolitionist Pedagogy, Samantha Lilienfeld
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This capstone project explores education and pedagogy as sites for abolitionist practice, and approaches abolitionism as a method by building on the idea of abolition democracy. Using the framework of abolition as a pedagogical practice, I see teaching and learning as urgent tasks of contemporary abolitionism. My project integrates research and scholarship on the abolition of prisons and policing with practices of pedagogy, in part by thinking interdisciplinarily with students and scholars working within CUNY. Practicing Abolition: A Digital Roundtable on Abolitionist Pedagogy incorporates voices from students and scholars about how they practice abolitionist pedagogy in higher education by presenting …
'My Name Is Peaches': Black Women's Affect In The Blues Biomyth, Taylor C. Scott
'My Name Is Peaches': Black Women's Affect In The Blues Biomyth, Taylor C. Scott
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
For this project, I am interested in the study of nuanced self-representations of Black rage that appear within African American literary traditions, specifically the blues aesthetic, wherein artists narrativize a wide spectrum of intelligent and specific emotion--not just melancholy. Blues narratives in which Black people self-represent are in direct opposition to flattened narratives of certain affective modes such as anger as a useless, backwards, pathologized, and flat feeling that appear within dominant U.S. and global iconographies. What I see in the blues aesthetic is the capacity for a multichromatic approach to studying rage and Black authorship in America. By using …
The Precarity Of Images: Sci-Fi Worldbuilding And Its Uses In Agitprop, Noah Jodice
The Precarity Of Images: Sci-Fi Worldbuilding And Its Uses In Agitprop, Noah Jodice
MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture
“The Precarity of Images” examines how theories of worldbuilding common to the science fiction genre are applied to the making of agitational propaganda for liberation movements. In doing so, it questions how both explicit and implicit political images—posters, games, comics, illustrations, social media posts—either light a pathway for making a more just world or limit our ability to imagine alternate futures.
Following the ethos of Steven Jackson’s essay “Rethinking Repair,” the paper takes the “breakdown, erosion, and decay” of images as a starting point. Images change meaning over time as our cultural connections to them shift. Strategies of decoding and …
Isocrates's Place In Postmodern Advertising, Christopher Barkley
Isocrates's Place In Postmodern Advertising, Christopher Barkley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study in communication and rhetoric seeks to ascertain constructive applications for distinct advertising practices by examining Isocrates’s work and place in postmodern advertising. The focus uses 5 principles known to Isocrates which are: 1) commonwealths of households, 2) integration of reputation, elegance, substance and style, 3) education and public discourse, 4) phronesis and praxis, and 5) truth and verisimilitude. These 5 principles can form a constructive and practical advertising approach. This study is important. It examines Isocrates through the lens of advertising and extends the research done about him by leading Isocrates scholars who have looked primarily at his …

The Foundation And Center Of American Studies; An Introduction To Native American Histories And Cultures - A Syllabus, Rhonda L. Baldonado
Master of Arts in American Studies Capstones
The contention of this Capstone is that Native America is the foundation and should be the center of American Studies. One way to facilitate such an effect on the discipline is to expose community college students to American Studies early, by offering an elective course about Native American communities within the US. The heart and soul of this Capstone applied project is a syllabus for an American Studies course in Native American Histories and Cultures. It is an elective, introductory, survey course that that covers four important aspects of Indigeneity: Indigenous Histories, Native American Politics and Activism, Indigenous Women and …
Women Without Bodies: Autonomy, Empowerment, And Embodiment In Southern Women, Martha Peyton Ford
Women Without Bodies: Autonomy, Empowerment, And Embodiment In Southern Women, Martha Peyton Ford
Honors Theses
This thesis explores the relationship between rural, upper-class, Southern, white women and their bodies. In my attempts to understand this relationship, I analyze sources from the fields of gender studies, philosophy, and psychology, utilizing concepts such as the Cult of True Womanhood, the newly-emerging field of body memoirs, and the long-lasting but elusive idea of Southern ladyhood to make sense of cultural expectations of Southern women and their bodies. This research, alongside my use of autoethnography and oral history, serve as an anchor for my analysis of women’s relationships to their bodies, in which I use myself, my mother, and …

Historiography Of Nineteenth-Century Florida, James G. Cusick
Historiography Of Nineteenth-Century Florida, James G. Cusick
Florida Historical Quarterly
When the nineteenth century began, Florida, or the two colonial territories that became the modern state, was still under Spanish rule, its residents untouched as yet by coming rebellion and war. When the century closed, Florida was part of the American Deep South, looking to northern financiers for its Gilded Age development while creating Jim Crow laws as a buttress against calls for racial equality.

Reconstituting Power In An American Borderland: Political Change In Colonial East Florida, Nancy O. Gallman
Reconstituting Power In An American Borderland: Political Change In Colonial East Florida, Nancy O. Gallman
Florida Historical Quarterly
On his 10,000-acre plantation along the St. Johns River, Francis Philip Fatio had much to claim. With the labor of more than eighty slaves, Fatio and his partner investors established a thriving plantation in former Native territory soon after they arrived in British East Florida in 1771. Named in honor of his homeland, Fatio's "New Switzerland" plantation excelled in the production of timber, cattle, citrus fruits, and naval stores.1 Historians once suggested that lasting only twenty-one years, East Florida's British period was too brief to have much impact on the development of the colony: "too short for the roots to …
Sucking, Blood, And Fire: Timucuan Healing Practices In Spanish Florida, Tamara Shircliff Spike
Sucking, Blood, And Fire: Timucuan Healing Practices In Spanish Florida, Tamara Shircliff Spike
Florida Historical Quarterly
As a colonial holding, Spanish Florida was a provincial backwater. It was located on the periphery of empire and parsely settled. Spain spent comparatively little time and effort developing the infrastructure of the colony.1 However, it is for these very reasons that Florida reflects to a magnified degree a problem in mission fields throughout the Americas during the colonial period: how to combat disease in the mission populations while still working to extirpate Native practices seen as anti-doctrinal. Descriptions of healing rituals by Franciscan friars and other Europeans offer tremendous insight into how the Timucuans of Spanish Florida viewed their …
