Agronomy Notes
The objective of the tall fescue breeding program is the development of varieties characterized by superior nutritive value (including reduced contents of perloline and loline alkaloids and minimal infestation of the fungal endophyte, Acremonium coenophialum), palatability, disease resistance, and adaptation through the utilization of intergeneric and interspecific hybrid derivatives of ryegrass and tall fescue species. Kentucky 31, Kenwell, and Kenhy were previously released from this breeding program. Johnstone tall fescue, developed cooperatively by the Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station and USDA-ARS, was released March 1, 1982 as a new variety. Johnstone is characterized as having low levels of perloline alkaloid and …

Documentation Of Whole-Farm Model For The Eastern Wheatbelt Of Western Australia, Ross S. Kingwell, David J. Pannell, David. A. Morrison
Grain and other field crops published reports
The Eastern Wheatbelt Model (EwM) is a hypothetical farm model, intended to be representative of farms in the eastern wheatbelt region. It is a model of an 'average' farm in an 'average' season. Nevertheless it is possible to substitute the resource mix of a 'real' farm for the •average' and to substitute various types of season for the 'average'.
Assumptions of 'average' farm resources and •average' season are based on opinions by WADA researchers and advisers. For the EWM, researchers and advisers at Merredin prescribed average resources for an eastern wheatbelt farm receiving a 300 mm average rainfall including 210 …

Residual Values Of Australian Rock Phosphates, Michael D A Bolland
Residual Values Of Australian Rock Phosphates, Michael D A Bolland
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
For years superphosphate has been the cheapest, convenient and most effective way of supplying phosphorus to newly cleared soils in Western Australia's South-West that are acutely deficient in phosphorus. However its effectiveness as a phosphorus source falls markedly after application. Regular applications are needed to maintaine profitable pastures and crops on these soils.
After a big jump in supperphosphate prices in the mid 970s, researchers tested the use of Australian rock phosphates as potentially cheaper alternative phosphorus fertilisers to superphosphate. On the none-leaching sands, as this article shows, none of the rock phosphates was as effective for plant growth as …

INTSORMIL Impacts and Bulletins
This annual report covers the activities for program Year 6, the final year of operation under the initial grant document.
The CRSP's present a unique model for conducting agricultural research in collaboration with developing country agricultural research programs.
The INTSORMIL program also demonstrates these characteristics:
-- INTSORMIL has the dual goal of improving agriculture in the developing countries and in the United States.
- The seven participating U.S. institutions agree to contribute at least 25% of the cost of the CRSP from non-federal resources (in money or in kind), justified on the basis of benefits that can accrue to their …

INTSORMIL Impacts and Bulletins
The Sorghum/Millet Collaborative Research Program, INTSORMIL, combines the resources and research talent of host country research institutions, eight land grant universities, and the Agency for International Development. Its objective is to improve world-wide sorghum and millet production and utilization. This 5-year report shows that the international sorghum-millet research program is one in which researchers from the U.S. and host countries can effectively collaborate. The INTSORMIL External Evaluation Panel and other reviewers have and will continue to recommend program strengthening changes. Adjustments in research program content and scientist involvement will result as plans are made for future research.

Soil Acidity On High Rainfall Pastures, J S. Yeates, D. A. Mcghie, I. R. Wilson
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Most soils of the high rainfall area of south-western Western Australia are naturally acis.
The most acid group of soils, the peaty sands. have been routinely limed before subterranean clover pastures were established since research in the 1950s showed that poor Rhizobium nodulation could be overcome with the application of about 2 tonnes per hectare of coastal limesand.

Soil Acidity And Liming In The Lower Great Southern, R N. Glencross, M. G. Clarke
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
In the 375 to 750 millimetre rainfall area of the Lower Great Southern, reports of loss of subterranean clover from established pastures, reduced carrying capacity for sheep and increasing soil acidity lead to the establishment in 1981 of a research programme into the effects of soil acidity on pasture productivity in that region.

Summary Of Rhizobium Experiments, J G. Howieson
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
The main emphasis for rhizobial work in 1984 was on the acid tolerance of medic Rhizobium. The experimental programme in the field was greatly expanded to include testing of some 160 isolates collected from Sardinia in May 1984. Broadacre sowings of acid tolerant strain WSM 419 were undertaken as a preliminary step to its commercial release in 1985. Glasshouse work in 1984 was dedicated to a more intensive investigation of the factors contributing to the enhanced nodulating ability of M. polymorpha and M. murex on acid soils. As well, a simple technique for identifying acid tolerant strains of rhizobia in …
