Some Instructive Field Days, "Martingale" .

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Although fully conversant with the old newspaperman's adage which states that "Yesterday's news is the bath-heater fuel of today," we make no apology for including these reports of field days held after our December issue had gone to press. It is felt that they contain some useful lessons which, even at this late date, are deserving of emphasis.

Editorial - His Work Endures

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

In presenting the first issue of the "Journal of Agriculture" in its new form, it is with profound sorrow that we chronicle the passing of the Hon. Garnet Barrington Wood, M.L.C., Minister for Agriculture and the North-West, who died suddenly during a Cabinet meeting on January 2. The change of policy in the presentation of this Journal was keenly supported by the late Minister, and only a few hours before his death he had promised to write a foreword to the first issue, which was to have appeared on this page.

Summary Of Information Given At Fortified Farming, Agricultural Extension Service, South Dakota State College

SDSU Extension Circulars

United States farmers have done heroic jobs of producing food during the past 10 years. Now our country needs even greater farm production in 1952. And for future years increasing food demands are likely. Farmers will need to produce more. At the same time we must "fortify our farming" by maintaining and building up our soil.

Reduced Ascorbic Acid Content Of Potatoes Grown With And Without Straw Mulching And Irrigation In Eastern Nebraska, H. O. Werner, Ruth M. Leverton, Mary R. Gram Nov 1951

Reduced Ascorbic Acid Content Of Potatoes Grown With And Without Straw Mulching And Irrigation In Eastern Nebraska, H. O. Werner, Ruth M. Leverton, Mary R. Gram

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Potatoes harvested from home gardens and in commercial early-producing fields in the Midwest are an important low-cost source of ascorbic acid from late June into September. The major portion of the early commercial crop in Nebraska (harvested mostly in August) is produced with irrigation. Straw or litter mulching is a well established practice in the nonirrigated garden and farm potato patches. The value of these cultural methods for increasing yield is well known, but prior to this study little was known about their influence on the ascorbic acid content of the tubers, or about the persistence of any such influence …

Gifts For Family And Friends, Anna D. Walker Sep 1951

Gifts For Family And Friends, Anna D. Walker

SDSU Extension Circulars

Part of the joy in giving gifts comes from the making of something special for a friend or family member. The giving of gifts to mark such events as anniversaries, Christmas and Easter is a long established custom. Looking back into history, we read that tribute was given to show homage to royalty and other people of importance. It was thought that the rarer and richer the gift, the greater was the love and respect shown. Rare spices, perfumes, gold and jewels obtained by the giver at great expense and often much hardship were considered suitable gifts for royalty. People …

Some Economic Aspects Of The Fluid Milk Industry Of Nebraska, Kenneth E. Anderson Jun 1951

Some Economic Aspects Of The Fluid Milk Industry Of Nebraska, Kenneth E. Anderson

Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Most citizens of Nebraska, especially the dairy farmers who produced milk for city consumption, are currently concerned with the problem of marketing fluid milk.In Nebraska and all over the United States, sales of wholesale milk farmers have been increasing for the past 15 years, while cream sales to creameries have been decreasing.

Production of milk in Nebraska is greatest in the eastern part of the state.Likewise, consumption is concentrated in Eastern Nebraska. This is most likely due to Eastern Nebraska’s highly concentrated population as well as the most favorable farm conditions for dairy cows.

Most of the bottled milk in …

The Yield And Thiamine, Riboflavin And Niacin Content Of Alfalfa Hay As Related To Fertilizer Treatment Of Soil, Rasik L. Pathak May 1951

The Yield And Thiamine, Riboflavin And Niacin Content Of Alfalfa Hay As Related To Fertilizer Treatment Of Soil, Rasik L. Pathak

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Alfalfa has long been recognized as an outstanding hay plant in terms of both yield and feeding value. It is high in digestible protein, minerals, and vitamins. Because of its long life it can be economically produced. It is of exceptional value in maintaining soil fertility by helping to control erosion, by improving the physical condition of the soil, and by accumulating large amounts of nitrogen.

The great importance of alfalfa growing in the United States is attested by its rapid and continued expansion. It is one of the most important forage crops and is grown on a greater acreage …

The Desert Shall Blossom As The Rose, D. Wynne Thorne Apr 1951

The Desert Shall Blossom As The Rose, D. Wynne Thorne

Faculty Honor Lectures

IRRIGATION AGRICULTURE has not received attention commensurate with its significance in either ancient or modem times. Although most ancient civilizations depended on irrigation for their very existence, one can consult volume after volume of history only to find irrigation scarcely mentioned. To the agricultural specialist the great challenge and the strength and weakness of irrigation agriculture is not in constructing Boulder Dams nor in planning winding canals and syphons to carry water from the Columbia River to California. The critical point is on the farms where water is applied to the soil and crops are harvested. There the real battles …

Progressive Development And Seasonal Variations Of The Corn Crop, T. A. Kiesselbach Dec 1950

Progressive Development And Seasonal Variations Of The Corn Crop, T. A. Kiesselbach

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The chief purpose of these studies has been to determine the normal growth changes that occur in the corn plant at successive intervals when growing in the field, and to observe annual yield variations in relation to prevailing weather conditions. Aside from supplying information regarding the physiology of this crop, the data are of interest to the corn grower because they indicate comparative yields, shelling percentages, moisture contents, and feed constituents at various stages of development. Some data also are presented concerning the effects of frost, drouth, day length, and the economic value of tillers and seminal roots.

4-H Project Guide : Swine Production, Clifford Iverson, James O'Connell Jun 1950

4-H Project Guide : Swine Production, Clifford Iverson, James O'Connell

SDSU Extension Circulars

Choosing a Breed: The question "Which breed shall I raise" confronts every purebred hog producer. He may have a personal preference which will assist him in choosing a breed. If he has no such preference, it would be well worth while to consider the most popular breed in the community. This procedure will help the breeder to gain popularity, in establishing a reputation, and in attracting more buyers into the community. Each breeder may believe he has the best breed because of size, feeding qualities, higher dressing percentage or some other factor; but there is more difference within breeds than …

The Bunt Problem In Relation To Winter Wheat Breeding, Delmar C. Tingey Apr 1950

The Bunt Problem In Relation To Winter Wheat Breeding, Delmar C. Tingey

Faculty Honor Lectures

Man is forever in search of new and better crops. He has for centuries been a persistant and fairly successful plant . breeder. Ancient Chinese are credited with breeding superior varieties of rice and hybrid flowers. Indians in America produced remarkable varieties of corn, and it was not until modern corn breeders developed "hybrid corn" that they produced superior yielding varieties.

The discovery of Mendel's work on hybridization 50 years ago pointed the way to almost limitless possibilities in plant improvement through breeding. Mendel discovered that if two related individuals were hybridized, it was possible in later generations to obtain …

Crop Damage By Wildlife In California ; With Special Emphasis On Deer And Waterfowl, Earl Roy Biehn Jan 1950

Crop Damage By Wildlife In California ; With Special Emphasis On Deer And Waterfowl, Earl Roy Biehn

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The problem of crop damage by wildlife is not a new one in California, but it has assumed a role of major economic importance only during the last few decades. Since this problem was first encountered in California, it has steadily increased in size and scope, until today in many areas of the state it is an important economic problem of the farmer; a pressing management problem for the biologists and wildlife technicians of the California Division of Fish and Game; a constant challenge to the game management agents of the Federal Fish and Wildlife Service; a great concern of …

Leaflet No 1002 - Swine Paratyphoid (Salmonellosis Necrotic Enteritis), C R. Toop

Bulletins 1 - 2999

Paratyphoid is an infectious disease of pigs which is likely to make it appearance wherever pig raising is practised.

It may occur in an acute septicaemic form which is often rapidly fatal and accompanied by serious mortality and in a sub-acute or chronic form known as necrotic enteritis which is characterised by unthriftiness and scouring. The out breaks occurring in Western Australia are principally of the acute type and they are usually associated with the introduction of pigs from saleyards.

The Structure And Reproduction Of Corn, T. A. Kiesselbach Nov 1949

The Structure And Reproduction Of Corn, T. A. Kiesselbach

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The primary purpose of this paper is to summarize investigations concerning the structure and reproduction of the corn plant (Zea mays L.). Because of wide interest in the reproductive process in connection with breeding and genetic studies the floral development, fertilization, and embryology are especially stressed. The morphology and development of the vegetative organs is also included. The botanical relationship, origin, genetics and breeding of corn are briefly considered.
