Meal Planning For South Dakota 4-H Girls, Jane Meyer

SDSU Extension Circulars

Cooking's fun, so let's begin! Even if you're a very young 4-H girl, you can cook. But, you must start with simple foods. As you learn more, and practice, cooking will be easier. You can then make more difficult dishes, and even plan and prepare some family meals. Let's start by learning some basic rules. You need to be neat and clean; you should always be safe; you should measure correctly; you must know how to read recipes. A good cook knows and follows these rules. You'll want to know them too!

Effect Of Hay Or Rate Of Grain Supplementation On Performance Of Lactating Dairy Cows Fed Clipped Pasture Forage, Clive Wendell Arave May 1957

Effect Of Hay Or Rate Of Grain Supplementation On Performance Of Lactating Dairy Cows Fed Clipped Pasture Forage, Clive Wendell Arave

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Pasture is considered one of our most important agricultural crops, contributing more than one third of all feed consumed by livestock in the United States. High quality pasture has been recognized to be highly important in efficient milk production. It has been shown, however, that good pasture must be supplemented by concentrates if milk production is to be maintained at a high level.

A pasture mixture developed at the Utah Agriculture Experiment Station has yielded considerably more total digestible nutrients per acre than other roughages or farm grains commonly grown in Utah. Concentrates tend to be relatively more expensive than …

Meat : Selection-Care-Cookery, Rena Wills Jan 1957

Meat : Selection-Care-Cookery, Rena Wills

SDSU Extension Circulars

Meats are excellent protein foods. Meat protein contains generous amounts of the essential amino acids. These are the amino acids which your food must provide to enable your body to build its protein. Protein rich vegetables and cereals may lack one or more of these essential amino acids. Meat enhances their protein value when it is served with them. The B vitamins and the minerals--phosphorus, iron and copper--are found along with protein in the meat. Pork is an exceptionally good source of thiamine and iron. Under ordinary circumstances, if your protein needs are met, your body's need for the B …

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

Most of the butter manufactured by South Dakota creameries is Grade B or under as determined by our present Federal grading system. A recent South Dakota study showed that 81 per cent of the butter was Grade B and 19 per cent Grade C, The same study found that about 80 per cent of South Dakota Butter was shipped to markets where a large amount of the other butter was of a higher grade and premiums were paid for higher quality. Present quality standards for butter are based to a large extent on taste preferences of consumers which were assumed …

The Economics Of Turkey Production In Utah, 1954, Richard W. Kearl

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The production of turkeys by farmers for market in Utah has risen from a meager beginning a few decades ago, to one of the important agricultural industries today. Utah's turkey industry has expanded tenfold from the 226,000 head sold in 1929 to the record high 2,285,000 head sold in 1954. Pounds sold was 13 times greater in 1954 than in 1929 due to the increased weight per bird as well as to the increase in number of head. The record number of 2,285,000 head sold for the amount of $10,635,000. This accounted for about seven per cent of the total …

False Smut Of Buffalograss, John L. Weihing Mar 1956

False Smut Of Buffalograss, John L. Weihing

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

False smut of buffalograss, Buchloe dactyloides (Nutt.) Engelm., caused by Cercospora seminalis Ell. & Ev. is a disease that destroys the unfertilized ovary. The disease was first reported by J. B. Ellis and B. M. Everhart in 1888. They gave only a brief description of the disease and named the causal fungus Cercospora seminalis. There are no etiological studies of false smut recorded in the literature. The origin of the term "false smut" is unknown to the author, but it so descriptively fits the general appearances of the disease that one readily understands its usage. The following studies were …

Cc143 Poultry Profit Pointers: Choosing Your Baby Chicks, Elvin C. Schulte

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

The successful poultryman is very careful in buying chicks, and in selecting birds for his breeding or laying flock. Well-bred stock will do quite well even when conditions are poor, but poor stock will not pay under the best conditions.

This campaign circular discusses what to look for when purchasing chicks for your farm. This includes disease-free chicks, and the types and breeds. It also discusses how many to start with, when to start, keeping records, how to feed them, and preparing the brooder house for the arrival of new chicks.

Growth Measurements Of Holstein Females From Birth To Seven Years, H. P. Davis, I. L. Hathaway Nov 1955

Growth Measurements Of Holstein Females From Birth To Seven Years, H. P. Davis, I. L. Hathaway

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Measurements of growth, to be meaningful, must be taken of various parts of the body, at regular intervals, under standardized environmental conditions, from birth through the growth span of the animal. From these measurements skeletal growth standards may be prepared for the several ages. Such standards can be used to measure growth at any age period. They will serve the research worker as a guide for experimental procedure and will provide the livestock raiser a basis with which his animals may be compared. Present standards of growth for dairy cattle are based mostly upon live weight, although considerable data are …

Irrigating Vegetables And Small Fruits, Martin Fogel, Lloyd Ayres Jun 1955

Irrigating Vegetables And Small Fruits, Martin Fogel, Lloyd Ayres

SDSU Extension Circulars

Vegetables and small fruits are grown more extensively in South Dakota than most people realize. Almost every farm has a garden where vegetables and small fruits are grown for immediate use. In every town and city, gardens of varying sizes are found. These home gardens produce a large amount of wholesome, high nutritional food. Market gardening is an important enterprise near the larger towns in South Dakota. It is a highly specialized business, though oftentime it is done on a very limited acreage. The detrimental effects of prolonged dry periods, which have caused complete failure of vegetable and small fruit …

An Economic Evaluation Of Feeding Sucrose To Beef And Swine Prior To Slaughter, Douglas C. Strong May 1955

An Economic Evaluation Of Feeding Sucrose To Beef And Swine Prior To Slaughter, Douglas C. Strong

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Animal feeding rations have long included carbohydrates as a primary constituent. Grains are included in most animal fattening rations, and the by-products of sugar beets have been used f or many years in livestock feeding (Kutish 1950 b). The use of molasses in commercial feed mixes in 1899 made possible its extended use in animal feeding practices (Hall 1950).

Feeding Poultry For Profit, Glen Hart, C. W. Carlson Jun 1954

Feeding Poultry For Profit, Glen Hart, C. W. Carlson

SDSU Extension Circulars

Feeding poultry for profit involves essentially the use of top quality stock, proper management and care, proper facilities, and last, but certainly not least important, a good feed. The feed accounts for well over 50 per cent of the cost of poultry, meat and egg production, hence its importance cannot be considered lightly. A good feed supplies all of the essential nutrients in the required amounts for each type of production.

Rb54-175 Farm Family Housing Needs And Preferences In Nebraska, Virginia Y. Trotter, Margaret I. Liston

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Some farm families in Nebraska want to build new houses. Many others are planning to remodel. These families will be asking architects, engineers, builders, contractors, and dealers for plans that meet their needs. Thus, farmhouse plans should be developed that provide for the basic needs of all farm families and that are adaptable to special requirements of some families.

This 1954 bulletin reports the results of a survey of Nebraska farm family preferences, activities and possessions as they are related to housing needs. The study was part of a cooperative research project for the improvement of farm family housing in …

The Effects Of Fertilizers On The Yield, Carotene Content And Tocopherol Content Of Ranger Alfalfa Hay In Utah, Charles Wm. Jones

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Alfalfa is generally regarded as one of the world's most valuable cultivated forage crops. Few crops, if any, are equal to it in capacity to produce heavy yields of highly nutritious, palatable feed. A combination of desirable attributes as a forage plant and adaptation to a wide diversity of soil and climatic conditions has led to the use of alfalfa in the world to an extent probably exceeding that of any other single legume or grass. Alfalfa constantly proves itself as a valuable feed for most types of livestock. This is especially true in the states where a large amount …
