Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Twenty-three entries of grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench), including eight inbred lines (five males and three females) and 15 hybrids, were evaluated to determine the proportion of γ, αII, and β-αI-kafirins and their association with contents of crude protein, fat, and starch; protein digestibility; in vitro dry matter disappearance; and seed weight. The male lines included three normal-seeded lines (TX2737, TX435, and P954063) and two large-seeded lines (Eastin1 and PL-1). Female lines consisted of three common U.S. seed parent lines (Wheatland, Redlan, and SA3042). The lines and their hybrids were grown under dryland conditions at two locations in …

Response Of Popcorn (Zea Mays Everta) To Nitrogen Rates And Plant Densities, Sabri̇ Gökmen, Özer Sencar, Mehmet Ali̇ Saki̇n
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The objective of this study was to evaluate grain yield and yield components of popcorn with different nitrogen rates and plant densities. Field studies were conducted in 1995 and 1996 at Kazova Plain in Tokat. The experiment was designed in a randomized-complete-block design with a split-plot arrangement with three replications. The treatments comprised six levels of nitrogen (0, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 kg N /ha) and four plant densities (5.7, 7.0, 9.5 and 14.0 plants /m^2). Nitrogen rates were in the main plots, and planting densities were in the sub-plots. An open pollinated was used as the material …

Effect Of Boron Application On The Yield And Quality Of Sugar Beet, Sai̇t Gezgi̇n, Mehmet Hamurcu, Mustafa Apaydin
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
This research was conducted to determine the effects of application methods and the levels of boron on the root yield and quality of sugar beet in the Konya-Altınekin plain. The experimental soil was sandy loam, poor in organic matter and rich in calcium carbonate. The soil was alkaline in reaction and sufficient in boron content (0.55 ppm). In this work, three different levels of boron in borax form (0, 0.3 and 0.6 kg B/da) were applied with five different methods (soil, leaf, seed, soil + leaf, seed + leaf). The results showed that the root yield and refined sugar yield …

Farming Systems To Manage Salinity. Farmer Directed Research, Development And Extension. Research Results 2001, Richard Olive
Natural resources published reports
More and more of Western Australia's agnicultural lands are becoming saline. Currently it is estimated that about 18 milliion ha of land are affected to a greater or lesser degree by salinity causing production losses estimated at about $70 million a year.
Unless ways are found to halt and reverse the salinisation of land it is estimated that another 4.4 million ha could become saline over the next 50 years.
Grain growers and the Federal Government, through the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC). are investing $12 4 million in R&D across Australia to develop productive solutions to the salinity …

Soy products contain isoflavones (genistein, daidzein, and glycitein)that display biological effects when ingested by humans and animals, these effects are species, dose and age dependent. Therefore, the content and quality of isoflavones in soybeans is a key to their biological effect. Our objective was to identify loci that underlie isoflavone content in soybean seeds. The study involved 100 recombinant inbred lines (RIL)fr om the cross of ‘Essex’ by ‘Forrest,’ two cultivars that contrast for isoflavone content. Isoflavone content of seeds fromeach RIL was determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The distribution of isoflavone content was continuous and unimodal. The …

The first consideration prior to seeding is to determine the present level of management being applied to the proposed site. Many sites will recover or improve without seeding if proper management is implemented. Soil is the primary natural resource and its conservation is the most important consideration in seedings.

Young herbivores learn which foods are harmful and which are safe through interactions with their mothers. Throughout life, they learn about the consequences of eating through postingestive feedback they experience after eating foods. But how can they do this in a world where toxin and nutrient levels of forages change daily and seasonally? How can they possibly learn and remember all the plants that grow in pastures and on rangelands? How can they survive when we move them to new pastures with unfamiliar foods?

Amartya Sen And World Food Day 2000, Bettina Klaus
Cornhusker Economics
As every year, World Food Day took place on October 16th. Being relatively new to UNL (and the U.S.), and being an assistant professor in the Economics Department (joint with the Agricultural Economics Department) with research interests in social choice and game theory, the probability that I would get involved with World Food Day were slim. However, somehow it caught my eye that the yearly teleconference that accompanies World Food Day featured the 1998 Nobel prize winner for economics, Professor Amartya Sen. The 2000 World Food Day’s teleconference topic was “Poverty and Hunger: The Tragic Link” and in a superb …

Profiting From Adversity - Meeting The Challenge Of Salinity Through New Industry Development, Andrew Quinn, Tamara Law, Peter Rowe
Profiting From Adversity - Meeting The Challenge Of Salinity Through New Industry Development, Andrew Quinn, Tamara Law, Peter Rowe
Natural resources published reports
Salinity in the Wheatbelt of Western Australia is one of the most significant challenges facing the State's agricultural sector.
Efforts to manage the increasing effect of salt influenced and threatened farming land requires not only the implementation of new farming systems, but a new way of thinking and attitude to production more in tune with environmental and technological limitations.
While past environment lobby pressures have significantly focused on other production activities such as mining and forestry, the future is likely to see increased community interest in agricultural production systems.
Consumers World wide are becoming more environmentally sensitive, with global media …

Improved Beef Demand Benefits Nebraska Cattle Producers, Richard T. Clark
Improved Beef Demand Benefits Nebraska Cattle Producers, Richard T. Clark
Cornhusker Economics
From 1979 until 1997 inflation-adjusted, retail beef prices in the U.S. declined by over 30%. During this same time period, per capita consumption declined about 10 pounds. These two facts, declining prices and declining consumption, lead to the conclusion that demand for beef in the U.S. declined over this time period.

Is Grass The Cheapest Feed?, Richard T. Clark
Cornhusker Economics
A recent IRM meeting with cattle producers in Gering highlighted the fact that different producers have different approaches to answering this question. It was quite obvious that the answer is “it depends.” It depends on the availability and cost of alternative sources of nutrition for the animal, labor costs and producer goals.

Future Directions For Joint Agricultural-Environmental Policies: Implications Fo The United Kingdom Experience For Europe And The United States, Thomas Dobbs, Jules Pretty
Economics Research Reports (1969 - 2017)
Major agri-environmental programs tried in the United Kingdom (UK.) since the mid- 1980s are examined in this report. Special attention is given to the Environmental Sensitive Areas (ESA) scheme, the Countryside Stewardship Scheme (CSS), and schemes to promote organic agriculture-first the Organic Aid Scheme and, following that, the Organic Farming Scheme. Several major studies and reviews of these and other agri-environmental schemes in England, Scotland, and Wales have been conducted in recent years. These studies and reviews are drawn upon to examine both the successes and shortcomings of various schemes in drawing farmers into more environmentally sound farming practices and …
