Economic Impact Of Ethanol Production On Arkansas Cattle Feed Prices, Mary Leigh Clayton Jun 2010

Economic Impact Of Ethanol Production On Arkansas Cattle Feed Prices, Mary Leigh Clayton

Student Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to determine what the impact of the increase in ethanol production is having on Arkansas cattle feed prices. This study relies on secondary data from Arkansas and national agricultural sectors. Both descriptive and analytical methods are used to evaluate the impact of crude oil, ethanol, and beef cattle prices on cattle feed. Data was collected from the USDA- NASS for beef cattle prices, EIA for crude oil, the Official Nebraska Government Website for ethanol, and the ERS/USDA Feedgrains Database for corn meal. The analytical methods for this study are graphical, correlation, and regression analysis. …

Good Agricultural Practices For Food Safety Of Fresh Produce, Laurie Hodges Jun 2010

Good Agricultural Practices For Food Safety Of Fresh Produce, Laurie Hodges

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

What are the guiding principles of food safety for fresh produce?

• Once contaminated, removing or killing pathogens on produce is very difficult.

• Preventing microbial contamination at all steps, from production to distribution, is strongly favored over treatments to eliminate contamination that may have occurred.

• Document the implementation of prevention programs, and educate workers at all levels of the agricultural and packing environments on food safety.

Key Signatures of a Credible Food Safety Program

The following is a condensed checklist of practices and conditions that reduce the potential for fresh produce to be exposed to pathogenic microbes. Review …

Are Biotechnology And Sustainable Agriculture Compatible?, David E. Ervin, Leland L. Glenna, Raymond Adelard Jussaume Jun 2010

Are Biotechnology And Sustainable Agriculture Compatible?, David E. Ervin, Leland L. Glenna, Raymond Adelard Jussaume

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Agricultural biotechnology has been largely opposed by advocates in the sustainable agriculture movement, despite claims by the technology’s proponents that it holds the promise to deliver both production (economic) and environmental benefits, two legs of the sustainability stool. We argue in this paper that participants in this polarized debate are talking past each other because assumptions about biotechnology and sustainability remain simplistic and poorly defined. Genetically engineered (GE) herbicide-resistant and insect-resistant crop varieties are the most visible current forms of agricultural biotechnology, and thus the form of biotechnology that many in the sustainability movement react to. However, these crops represent …

Sucrose, Water And Nutrient Use During State Ii Multiplication Of Two Turmeric Clones (Curcuma Longa L.) In Liquid Medium, Jeffrey Adelberg Mar 2010

Sucrose, Water And Nutrient Use During State Ii Multiplication Of Two Turmeric Clones (Curcuma Longa L.) In Liquid Medium, Jeffrey Adelberg

Publications

Two clones of turmeric (Cucruma longa L.) were assessed nine times during a 28-day culture period in double phosphate MS liquid medium containing 2%, 4% and 6% sucrose. The phase of rapid shoot bud multiplication lasted for 21 days or less, in both clones in all media. The maximum multiplication rate was 3.4× at 20 and 19 days, with 3.9% or 4.7% initial sucrose concentration being optimal for the clones 9-3 and 35-1, respectively. Dry mass increased over the entire culture period and was greatest with 4.8% or at least 6% initial sucrose concentration for the two clones, 9-3 …

Marketing Options For Grapes And Grape Products, Pamela Brady, Michael Thomsen, Justin R. Morris Jan 2010

Marketing Options For Grapes And Grape Products, Pamela Brady, Michael Thomsen, Justin R. Morris

AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins

Many owners of small- and medium-size farms in Arkansas and across the U.S. have begun to explore the potential of juice and wine grapes as an alternative crop to increase the profitability and stability of their farming operations. Grapes are unique in that they are not only well-suited for marketing through traditional commercial channels but also are popular in direct marketing venues such as produce stands, farmers markets, community sponsored agricultural ventures, and pick-your-own operations. This publication provides an overview of the various types of market channels available for grape growers and explores their potential as outlets for regional grape …

First Report Of Field Populations Of Two Potential Aphid Pests Of The Bioenergy Crop Miscanthus × Giganteus, Jeffrey Bradshaw, Jarrad R. Prasifka, Kevin L. Steffey, Michael E. Gray

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

Sipha flava (Forbes) (yellow sugarcane aphid) and Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch) (corn leaf aphid) (Hemiptera: Homoptera: Aphididae) are common aphids occurring throughout North America on many host plants, most of which are grasses (Blackman & Eastop 2006). Both aphids are pests of several important food crops, e.g., Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench (sorghum), Saccharum officinarum L. (sugarcane), Triticum spp. (wheat), and Zea mays L. (corn) (Blackman & Eastop 2000). Additionally, both aphids are vectors of potyviruses and R. maidis is a vector of luteoviruses in these crops. Until now, to our knowledge, no natural infestations of these aphids have been reported on …

Effects Of Maternal Nutrition On Conceptus Growth And Offspring Performance: Implications For Beef Cattle Production, Richard N. Funston, David M. Larson, K. A. Vonnahme Jan 2010

Effects Of Maternal Nutrition On Conceptus Growth And Offspring Performance: Implications For Beef Cattle Production, Richard N. Funston, David M. Larson, K. A. Vonnahme

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

Developmental programming is the concept that a maternal stimulus or insult at a critical period in fetal development has long-term effects on the offspring. Historically, considerable effort has been made to understand how nutrition influences health and productivity during the postnatal period. Whereas maternal nutrition during pregnancy plays an essential role in proper fetal and placental development, less is known about how maternal nutrition affects the health and productivity of the offspring. Conceptus growth is sensitive to direct and indirect effects of maternal dietary intake. Even from the earliest stages of embryonic life, when nutrient requirements for conceptus growth are …

Case Study: Feed Intake And Performance Of Heifers Sired By High- Or Low-Residual Feed Intake Angus Bulls, J. Minick Bormann, D. W. Moser, T. T. Marston

Haskell Agricultural Laboratory (Northeast Research and Extension Center)

The objective of this project was to investigate the effects of selecting sires for residual feed intake (RFI) on the performance of their daughters. Bulls with low or high estimated breeding values (EBV) for RFI were selected from the Angus Society of Australia sire summary and mated to Angus cross commercial cows at the Kansas State University Cow-Calf Unit in 2005 and 2006. The average EBV of low- and high-RFI bulls were −0.55 and 0.27 kg DM, respectively. Heifers born in 2006 were tested for feed intake in 2 groups (n = 24, n = 26), and heifers born in …

Potassium For High Rainfall Pastures, Mike Bolland, Bill Russell Jan 2010

Potassium For High Rainfall Pastures, Mike Bolland, Bill Russell

Bulletins 4000 -

Potassium plays a major role in plant growth. It maintains the solutions in plant cells at ionic strengths suitable for maintaining strong plant walls and for the proper functioning of leaf pores (stomata) and plant processes such as photosynthesis, transport of sugars and enzyme activation.

Potassium does not become a direct part of the plant structure but acts to regulate water balances, nutrient and sugar movement in plant tissue. Plants deficient in potassium cannot use other nutrients and water efficiently. They are less tolerant of stresses such as drought and waterlogging and are more susceptible to pests and diseases.
