Cover crops, utilized by producers to provide seasonal soil cover between cash or forage crop cycles, play a significant role in diversifying crop rotations and enhancing environmental sustainability. This research aims to assess the economic impact and farmer perceptions of cover crop adoption in the southeastern United States, particularly in Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. Producers show interest in adopting cover crops with increasing awareness of their benefits, such as improved soil health, water quality, weed suppression, and reduced soil erosion. Southern blight, a disease caused by the soil-borne fungus Sclerotium rolfsii (S. rolfsii), is favored by the hot and humid conditions of the southeastern United States, posing a significant challenge to hemp production in Tennessee. Black plastic mulch (BPM), commonly used for weed control, can exacerbate the disease. There is limited information on the effects of straw mulch (SM), known to moderate soil temperatures and moisture, or planting time in disease management. Watermelon is a water-intensive vegetable crop that is sensitive to drought and requires adequate nutrient supply for good yield and fruit quality. It is an important vegetable crop grown on 142,000 acres in the United States and 586 acres throughout Utah. Utah experienced its driest year on record in 2020 during a five-year drought (2019 to 2023). This affected local ecosystems, including the Great Salt Lake, which experienced record-low water levels. The drought also negatively affected the agricultural sector, including watermelon growers. Higher-than-average fertilizer prices in recent years have also threatened watermelon production. Penelitian ini bertujuan mempelajari pengaruh suplemen Zn-Proteinat, Cu-Proteinat dan Ca-Minyak dalam ransum berbasis pucuk tebu diamoniasi terhadap pertumbuhan dan efisiensi ransum pada domba jantan persilangan Priangan x Barbados. Percobaan dilakukan terhadap 5 ekor domba jantan yang sedang tumbuh dengan menggunakan rancangan Bujur Sangkar Latin (BSL) 5x5, lima macam ransum yaitu R1 = campuran 50% pucuk tebu amoniasi + 50% konsentrat, R2 = R1 + 2% Zn-proteinat, R3 = R1 + 2% Cu-proteinat, R4 = R2 + 2% Cu-proteinat, dan R5 = R4 + Ca-minyak ikan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari potensi pakan asal limbah tanaman pangan dan daya dukungnya terhadap populasi ternak ruminansia di wilayah kabupaten Garut. Penelitian dilakukan dengan cara survey dan pengumpulan data sekunder. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Potensi pakan asal rumput alam dan jerami asal limbah tanaman pangan di seluruh wilayah kabupaten Garut adalah 414.211,1 ton bahan kering (BK) yang terdiri atas 151.395,6 ton BK asal rumput dan 262.815,5 ton BK asal limbah tanaman pangan. Daya dukung pakan terhadap populasi ternak adalah 124.706 satuan ternak (ST), yang terdiri atas 45.580,5 ST ternak ruminansia kecil dan 79.125,5 ST ternak ruminansia besar.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari potensi pakan asal limbah tanaman pangan dan daya dukungnya terhadap populasi ternak ruminansia di wilayah kabupaten Sumedang. Penelitian dilakukan dengan cara survey dan pengumpulan data sekunder. Cangkang rajungan mengandung kitin yang persentasenya paling besar berupa polisakarida. Kitin dan derivat-derivatnya telah banyak digunakan dalam berbagai keperluan terutama untuk kesehatan. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh pemberian tepung rajungan sebagai sumber kitin terhadap efisiensi pakan dan kandungan lemak feces tikus putih Rattus norvegicus) strain Wistar. Penelitian menggunakan rancangan acak lengkap pola faktorial 2x5 dengan tiga kali ulangan. Faktor pertama adalah jenis kelamin dan kedua level tepung rajungan yaitu 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service has invested in direct-to-consumer initiatives to expand local food consumption and enhance farmers market opportunities. To evaluate the effectiveness of these efforts, this study employs a sample-selected ordered probit model to analyze consumer perceptions of farmers market performance across four states in the Southeast United States. Specifically, we examine differences in awareness and performance of product quality, diversity, and market infrastructure. Awareness and perceptions vary significantly by age, other demographics, and state. These insights provide market organizers and policymakers with data-driven strategies to tailor marketing efforts and improve engagement across diverse consumer segments.

This study evaluated whether Mehlich III soil nutrient sufficiency ratings reliably predict plant nutrient status and chlorophyll response across contrasting compost application histories. A greenhouse pot experiment was conducted with Chijimisai (Brassica rapa) planted in three treatment soils that had no compost (T1), moderate compost history (T2), and long-term hog manure compost application (T3). Plant performance was assessed through weekly shoot length and chlorophyll content (SPAD) measurements, leaf number at maturity, and leaf tissue nutrient analysis conducted at harvest. Background: Rural community libraries are increasingly recognised for providing localised knowledge, yet their potential to support agricultural extension services and improve access to postharvest knowledge in Uganda remains underexplored.
Objectives: This study examined the postharvest information needs of smallholder maize farmers and explored how community libraries can be leveraged to translate and repackage research-based knowledge to meet these needs.

uring the last ice age, ice sheets advanced and retreated across the upper Midwest, leaving behind a landscape characterized by poorly drained hummocky topography. Well-aerated soils have formed on uplands and lowlands are dominated by hydric soils. These wetlands and hydric soils have potential to store large quantities of carbon, particularly compared to the well-aerated uplands, but many have been drained and cultivated for decades. The industrialized food system creates environmental harm, reduces food sovereignty, and contributes to growing food insecurity. These problems oftentimes are overlooked in higher education. To address this gap, our project examines how access to sustainable food education and campus-community partnerships can improve well-being and informed decision-making amongst University of Montana students. This collaborative project connects partners within UM Wellness, PEAS Farm, the Missoula Food Bank and Community Center, and the Big Sky Culinary Institute. Invasive species are a growing problem, and it is important to investigate how invasives interact with novel ecosystems, which are characterized by distinct abiotic and biotic factors. In this dissertation, I investigate abiotic and biotic factors affecting two invasive pests in central Kentucky, Drosophila suzukii and Zaprionus indianus. In Kentucky, seasonality, and landscape features on population dynamics and fitness are unknown. I found that D. suzukii overwinters in Kentucky and that wild berry species improve winter survival. I used local weather data to identify meteorological variables that best predict D. suzukii populations. I tested the extent to which D. suzukii …

Hemp was reintroduced as a commercial crop in 2018 after a near 50-year production ban under the Controlled Substances Act. Since reintroduction, Kentucky has consistently ranked among the top five hemp producing states in the US. Surveys have shown that hemp is susceptible to a multitude of diseases that impact production. Among the most concerning diseases in Kentucky is Fusarium head blight (FHB). FHB is a major disease of cereals that is caused by various Fusarium species, predominately F. graminearum. FHB of hemp caused by F. graminearum was first reported in Kentucky in 2020. Between The Rails: Experiential Education And Its Impact On Compliance And Consistency In Racetrack Surface Management, Heather Mackenzie

Recent regulatory requirements within the Thoroughbred racing industry have increased expectations for consistent collection and reporting of racetrack surface data. Despite clear standards, implementation in daily operations remains inconsistent, highlighting a gap between regulation, knowledge, and practice. This study examined the impact of an experiential education curriculum on racetrack personnel’s self-efficacy and reporting consistency.
Using a quantitative design, data were collected through pre- and post-surveys measuring self-efficacy and records of the number of days surface data were entered. Descriptive statistics, paired-samples t-tests, and effect size analyses were used. Results showed a statistically significant increase in self-efficacy (p < .001) with large effect sizes, indicating meaningful gains in confidence and comfortability. Reporting consistency did not show a statistically significant change (p = .885).

Cannabis sativa L. is legally defined (U.S.) as hemp if the total tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) concentration remains less than 0.3% on a dry weight basis. Hemp can be produced for cannabinoid extraction, fiber, or grain. Hempseed meal and hempseed oil were approved as feed ingredients for chickens and performance horses in Kentucky. The development of sustainable feed supplements is a crucial component in addressing the current global need for resilient and environmentally responsible food systems. This dissertation has explored the potential of brown algae (Saccharina latissima) as a sustainable feed supplement for poultry with the potential to benefit production efficiency, product quality, and the global food supply. Influence Of Rice Hull Biochar And Cedar Bark Media On Strawberry Productivity And Carbon Sequestration Potential In Hydroponic Systems, Sakalya Rajapakse, Munehiro Tanaka

This study evaluated the influence of rice hull biochar (RHB) and cedar bark media (CBM) as sustainable substrates for hydroponic strawberry cultivation. The total yield from virgin CBM was 413 g/plant and that from virgin RHB was 354 g/plant. Used CBM increased the yield by 4 % (429 g/plant) while used RHB increased yield by 18 % (419 g/plant) compared to the virgin, with no significant substrate differences. Fruit yields and physical properties were strongly correlated, particularly with particle density (R2 = 0.573). After 7 years of cultivation, plant residues had accumulated in both substrates. This study aims to evaluate the effect of different withering methods on physicochemical and organoleptic properties of Liberica coffee leaf tea (Coffea liberica) and to identify the optimal treatment. The experiment was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five withering treatments, including no withering, room temperature withering for 10 h, air withering for 10 h, oven withering at 60°C for 30 min, and steaming for 2 min, each with four replications. Spectral analysis methods can nondestructively assess the quality of agricultural products but are limited by imaging speed and equipment costs. Therefore, they have not yet been fully integrated into engineering practices. This paper presents JujubeNet, a two-stage hyperspectral reconstruction model for detecting moisture content in jujubes. The first stage utilizes a generative pretrained Pix2Pix generative adversarial network (GAN) to generate RGB images of jujubes that mimic real camera styles and are pixel-to-pixel aligned with hyperspectral images. Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are synthetic organic compounds that have not been extensively studied in natural environments. The current study aimed to explore how PFASs, including perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS), perfluorohexanoate (PFHxA), perfluorotetradecanoate (PFTeDA), and perfluorobutanoate (PFBA), affect rice plants and influence their metabolism. These substances had a notable impact on root and shoot growth, reducing fresh and dry weights across various treatments compared to the control. These attributes were the least affected by PFOS treatment. PFBA treatment had significant adverse effects on chlorophyll a, b, and total chlorophyll levels, followed by the effects of PFHxA and PFTeDA. …

Sugar bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a legume of notable nutritional and functional value, and its genotypes have substantial variation in bioactive compounds, antioxidant activity, mineral composition, and enzyme inhibition properties. This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate the biochemical and functional diversity of 10 sugar bean genotypes using data mining algorithms to identify superior candidates for functional food and nutraceutical development. Individuals of the genus Xiphinema were recovered from soil samples collected during citrus surveys in south-eastern Türkiye. Morphological examination using light microscopy identified the species as X. brevicolle. The female individuals measured 2000–2050 μm in length, and displayed a slightly flattened lip region, an amphidelphic reproductive system with two well-developed branches, and a short conoid tail ending in a rounded tip. These morphometric and morphological features were consistent with those of previously described X. brevicolle specimens. This study investigates the optimal mixing ratios of common vetch (Vicia sativa L., CV) and oats (Avena sativa L., O) for enhanced forage yield and quality in the ecological conditions of Erzurum Province.
