Regional Relativities Of Sustainable Pastoral Sheep Production In Western Australia, A. Mcr Holm, R. O'Connor, I. Foster, M. Stevens, G. Beeston Jan 1995

Regional Relativities Of Sustainable Pastoral Sheep Production In Western Australia, A. Mcr Holm, R. O'Connor, I. Foster, M. Stevens, G. Beeston

Animal production and livestock published reports

The Pastoral Wool Industry has for many years been in a parlous position. Jennings (1979) in a review of the industry nearly 15 years ago concluded that a significant number of pastoralists were in serious financial trouble, mainly resulting from the inability of station businesses to cope with the worsening terms of trade affecting rural industries. The recent collapse of the wool price has again focused attention on the future viability of the pastoral wool industry. Wilcox and Cunningham (1993) in a review of the industry in October 1993, concluded that the clean price indicator needs to increase by 50 …

In Vitro Starch Disappearance Procedure Modifications, C. J. Richards, Jeffrey F. Pedersen, R. A. Britton, R. A. Stock, C. R. Krehbiel

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Four in vitro experiments evaluated the effects of ruminal fluid inoculum:artificial saliva ratios,

grinder type, grind size, and diet of ruminal fluid donor on in vitro starch disappearance. Experiment 1 examined rates of starch disappearance and coefficients of determination obtained by linear regression of starch disappearance using five grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolur (L.) Moench) lines, a corn (Zeu muys L.) control, and a wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) control. Grains were incubated for 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 h with inoculum varying in proportion of ruminal fluid and artificial saliva ( l:l, 1:2, 1:3, and 1:4). In …

A Model For Marketing Agricultural Programs [In] Private Colleges And Universities, Thomas N. Chittick Jan 1995

A Model For Marketing Agricultural Programs [In] Private Colleges And Universities, Thomas N. Chittick

Dissertations

Problem. Enrollment in agriculture programs has been declining despite a shortage of qualified graduates to meet the current needs of the agriculture industry. Although the principles of marketing have been applied to higher education, little has been written about the marketing of agriculture programs in a liberal arts institution.

Method. Information about marketing educational programs was reviewed in the literature and knowledge of current marketing practices of liberal arts colleges with agriculture programs was assembled by conducting site visits at seven colleges selected for the study. This information was the basis for the development of a marketing model. The model …

Modelling And Risk Analysis Of The Western Rock Lobster (Panulirus Cygnus) Fishery Of Western Australia, C. S. Yap Jan 1995

Modelling And Risk Analysis Of The Western Rock Lobster (Panulirus Cygnus) Fishery Of Western Australia, C. S. Yap

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The predictive power for short-term forecasting of selected biomass dynamic models was examined using the standardised catch and effort data from the 1944/45 to 1990/91 season of the western rock lobster. Risk analysis of the fishery based on the predicted fishing efforts with the Deriso-Schnute delay-difference model indicates a high probability of recruitment failure. Some hypothetical management strategies of reducing fishing effort were evaluated by taking into consideration the total catch and biological risk to the fishery.

Agricultural And Food Policy Preferences: The 1994 Perspectives Of South Dakota Agricultural Producers, Bashir Qasmi, John A. Sondey

Economics Research Reports (1969 - 2017)

U.S. farm policies are reviewed, every five years concurrent with the drafting of new farm legislation. The present farm bill expires in 1995, and a new bill will be debated and enacted in 1995. Since farm and food policies have a major impact on farmers, information on their preferences with regard to these policies are invaluable to legislators as well as to different advocacy groups (working for farmers). The research was completed as a part of a 15 state study to document the agricultural and food policy preferences by agricultural producers. This report deals with the policy preferences of South …

A Guide To Floodplain Cattle Fencing, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia, Main Roads, Western Australia

Animal production and livestock published reports

A seminar and workshop was held at Fitzroy Crossing in October 1993 to address the consequences of flooding to landholders and communities.

Damage to flood plain fencing was identified as one of the major concerns to landholders.

An outcome from the workshop was the decision to draw on local knowledge and collate information on options for fence and floodgate designs.

This information was to be made available to land holders and other interested parties - hence this publication.

Livestock Manure Production And Disposition: South Dakota Feedlots-Farms-Ranches, Donald Taylor Nov 1994

Livestock Manure Production And Disposition: South Dakota Feedlots-Farms-Ranches, Donald Taylor

Economics Research Reports (1969 - 2017)

In summary, compared to the U.S. 's major cattle feeding states in the Central and Southern Plains and the West, South Dakota's concentration of fed cattle per acre of cropland and per feedlot is limited. Iowa, Illinois, and Minnesota--along with South Dakota--are way at the other end of the U.S. fed cattle concentration continuum. Compared to these three Midwestheartland states, however, developments in South Dakota's fed cattle industry over the past two decades have been greatly different. In 1993, compared to 1973, the average number of fed cattle marketed per feedlot in South Dakota has doubled, whereas in the three …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Aquacultural research has been conducted collaboratively in Honduras since 1983 by the International Center for Aquaculture and Aquatic Environments, Auburn University, and the Direccion General de Pesca y Acuicultura, Secretaria de Recursos Naturales. This research was carried out at the El Carao National Fish Culture Research Center, Comayagua, Honduras, under the auspices of the USAID-financed Pond Dynamics/Aquaculture Collaborative Research Support Program (PD/A CRSP). The goal of the PD/A CRSP is to increase tilapia yields by optimizing resource use in systems based predominantly on natural pond productivity.

Should Australia Export Its Native Birds?, Ross Kingwell Aug 1994

Should Australia Export Its Native Birds?, Ross Kingwell

Biosecurity Research Articles

Commercial export from Australia of native birds, wild or captive bred, is prohibited. This paper firstly describes the current legislation and regulations that restrict the export of native birds and discusses why governments have adopted such a regulatory approach to bird species preservation. Secondly, the paper reviews the debate concerning the export ban, pointing out strengths and weaknesses in arguments and indicating the important role of CITES. Lastly, the paper outlines a new case for a conditional lifting of the ban, whereby DNA fingerprinting is used to establish transferable property rights to overcome a main source of market failure in …

Haskell Agricultural Laboratory (Northeast Research and Extension Center)

You’re looking at the interior of what’s called a “double-wide” swine finishing unit unveiled at the University of Nebraska Northeast Research and Extension Center open house, at Concord, in late June.
Northeast Center swine specialist Mike Brumm says the first study in the new research unit will look at space requirements for feeding pigs to a market weight of 300 pounds under all-in-all out operation. Various pen size and number combinations will be the focus of future research in the unit which can be divided into the following arrangements: Eight pens, each 14 by 16 feet; 16 pens, each 8 …

Evaluation And Utilization Of Biodiversity In Triticeae For Wheat Lmprovement, A. B. Damania, J. Valkoun

Herbarium Publications

To adapt new varieties to a wide spectrum of environments breeders and farmers have emphasized the need for broadening the current narrow genetic base of modern varieties of important cereal crops such as wheat and barley. In response to this need, several thousand samples of indigenously cultivated Triticeae species and their wild relatives have been collected from the centers of diversity. However, gene bank collections are of little use if they are not evaluated and the information disseminated widely. Evaluation is essentially the link between conservation and use. Some of the collected material has been evaluated at the International Center …

Plant Germplasm Resources, S. A. Eberhart, H. E. Bockelman Jun 1994

Plant Germplasm Resources, S. A. Eberhart, H. E. Bockelman

Herbarium Publications

Landraces and wild relatives of crops from centers of diversity have been rich sources of resistance to new pathogens, insect pests, and other stresses as well as for traits to improve food and fiber quality, animal feed, and industrial products. Because very few crops grown in the U.S. are native, plant introductions are vital to our agriculture. The National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS) was established to acquire, preserve, and distribute plant genetic resources from around the world so that scientists have immediate access to these source materials. The active collection is maintained and distributed by 19 national germplasm repositories. The …
