Farmland Manure Nutrient Loadings: South Dakota Feedlots And Cow-Calf Operations, Donlad Taylor, Gail L. Gullickson
Farmland Manure Nutrient Loadings: South Dakota Feedlots And Cow-Calf Operations, Donlad Taylor, Gail L. Gullickson
Economics Research Reports (1969 - 2017)
The estimated annual value of the manure produced by livestock and poultry in the U.S. as fertilizer for farmland is around $2.5 billion. The corresponding value for manure produced in South Dakota is $172 million, which is about 5% of total cash receipts from marketings and government payments to farmers and ranchers in the state in 1992 (Taylor, 1994, p 32). These estimated manure values represent the commercial market value of the elemental nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) contained in the manure produced by livestock, as a replacement for synthetic chemical fertilizers that otherwise would be purchased and …

Buntine-West Wubin And West Maya Catchment Management Report, William Oldfield, Natalie Hunt
Buntine-West Wubin And West Maya Catchment Management Report, William Oldfield, Natalie Hunt
Natural resources published reports
Buntine West/Wubin land Conservation District was formed when a number of landholders wanted to extend and join on to some existing deep drains. At first the group concentrated on the deep drains with some farmers joining on anda project to connect the drains up througha naturally occurring saline area and to run the main drain into a salt lake system. Funding was attained for 50% of the project and farmers with drains paid for the rest. It was considered unfair for landowners whose land this drain went through to pay all the cost as it was not draining arable land. …

Wetlands/Groundwater Quality In Agricultural Landscapes, D. H. Rickerl, D. E. Kringen, T. A. Machacek
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
In the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR - SO, NO, MN, IA), wetlands classified as "semi-permanent" or "seasonal" can act as groundwater recharge sites. The nutrient filtering capacity of wetlands has been investigated for both natural and constructed wetlands linked to surface water, but there is little information available on their subsequent impact on groundwater quality. This study investigates four seasonal and two semi-permanent wetlands in the PPR of eastern South Dakota. Transitional no-till (TNT) and organic farm (ORG) management systems border the wetlands. The objective is to determine the effects of farm management system on wetland surface water and groundwater …

Ec95-817 Nebraska Agricultural Producers Preferences For National Agriculture, And Food Policy After 1995, A.L. (Roy) Frederick, Glenn A. Helmers, Steven L. Elmore
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Farmers' preferences are important in the development of farm bills. In that spirit, the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Nebraska Agricultural Statistics Service recently asked a random sample of agricultural producers about their preferences for the 1995 farm bill. Similar surveys were undertaken in 1984 and 1989, prior to the last two farm bills. Each Nebraska survey was part of a larger, national effort. This year, 15 states, scattered across all regions of the United States, participated.
The purpose of this report is to summarize Nebraska producers' views on key issues likely to be …

G95-1256 Managing Dairy Cattle For Cow Comfort And Maximum Intake, Rick J. Grant, Jeffrey F. Keown
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide describes housing, milking, and feeding systems that promote cow comfort, maximum feed intake, and profitability.
The goal of every dairy producer should be to provide housing and milking environments that promote cow comfort, milk production, and herd health. Feeding systems and strategies should maximize feed intake and ensure proper body condition. Cow movement to and from the parlor should be gentle and considerate.
Cow comfort can make a difference of several thousand pounds of rolling herd average milk production between two herds with similar genetics and rations. The successful producer will create a cow environment that minimizes stress, …

G95-1271 Mastitis Is A Disease -- Control Is An Everyday Task, Gerald R. Bodman, Duane N. Rice
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
A comprehensive mastitis control program will effectively control infections caused by both environmental and contagious pathogens.
Herd mastitis problems can be caused by both environmental and contagious pathogens (disease-causing organisms). These problems may occur separately or simultaneously. Various testing techniques are necessary to determine the type of causative organism and the infection level of the herd or individual cow. Appropriate tests include the CMT (California Mastitis Test), milk market somatic cell count (SCC), Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA) SCC and laboratory cultures of milk from infected cows. Depending upon test results, mastitis control strategies may need to be changed to …

Ec95-745 Managing Livestock Odors: Principles, Assessment And Planning, Richard K. Koelsch
Ec95-745 Managing Livestock Odors: Principles, Assessment And Planning, Richard K. Koelsch
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Odors associated with livestock manure represent a growing challenge for livestock producers. Livestock production trends such as more animals per farm and expanded reliance upon manure storage have added to the odor muisance. Implementing other environmentally friendly practices such as manure nutrient management and maintenance of surface crop residues for soil conservation also have resulted in additional odor challenges.
Odors originating from livestock wastes are a common source of irritation between producers and neighbors. Confrontations may lead to more stringent local zoning regulations, greater scrutiny of other farm environmental issues, and litigation.
This publication summarizes the underlying causes of livestock …

The quality of care you provide will benefit the children within your care now and in the future. To provide adequate food choices for children, you need to understand what foods help children grow and develop.
Most of us know that good health and proper nutrition are important. The first step in helping children learn good nutritional habits is to practice them daily yourself. …
G95-1266 Environmental Considerations For Manure Application System Selection, Richard K. Koelsch
G95-1266 Environmental Considerations For Manure Application System Selection, Richard K. Koelsch
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Selection and operation of manure application equipment must consider environmental issues along with materials handling and economic factors.
Land application of livestock manure faces growing scrutiny because of potential surface and groundwater contamination and odor nuisances. Producers must consider features of a manure application system that enhance their ability to use manure's nutrients, and provide ways to minimize nuisances experienced by neighbors during manure application.

G95-1239 Managing To Prevent Equine Developmental Orthopedic Diseases, Kathleen P. Anderson
G95-1239 Managing To Prevent Equine Developmental Orthopedic Diseases, Kathleen P. Anderson
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide describes and discusses management techniques to prevent orthopedic disease in horses.
Equine Developmental Orthopedic Disease (DOD) is a significant problem facing today's horse breeders. A serious case of DOD can render a young horse essentially worthless due to crippling lameness. There is continuous debate as to the interplay of nutrition, management, genetics and exercise on the incidence of bone disease in young, growing horses. In the early stages, growing horses may appear unaffected by the disease, but may later develop lameness and eventually chronic arthritis. Recent research has identified many factors which will aid breeders to minimize the …

G95-1237 Feeding And Care Of Orphaned Foals, Kathleen P. Anderson
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This publication stresses the importance of care and feeding when foals are orphaned.
Feeding and raising orphaned foals can be an extreme challenge particularly if the foal was orphaned at birth. Losing a mare is never expected and being left with a motherless orphan can turn into an unexpected nightmare. Intensive management will optimize the foal's survival chances.
G95-1235 Growth Implants On Beef Heifer Reproduction, Gene H. Deutscher
G95-1235 Growth Implants On Beef Heifer Reproduction, Gene H. Deutscher
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This guide discusses the benefits and concerns in the use of growth implants with beef heifers. Growth promoting implants are used extensively in beef cattle finishing programs and in suckling and growing steer programs. Implants are one of the most economical means of improving performance. However, producers are concerned with implanting suckling and growing heifers because of the possible negative effects on subsequent reproduction of heifers selected as replacements. Replacement heifers need to grow rapidly, reach puberty early, conceive early, and increase in skeletal structure to reduce calving difficulty. If implants could be used to increase growth and skeletal structure …

Ec95-273 Swine Nutrition Guide, Duane Reese, Robert C. Thaler, Mike Brumm, Austin J. Lewis, Philip S. Miller, George W. Libal
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This publication is a revision of the previous swine nutrition publication prepared by the Universityof Nebraska and South DakotaState University. The focus of the publication continues to be on nutrient recommendations for swine. Specific factors (nutritional, environmental and managerial) that affect nutrient recommendations have been considered and discussed. We believe that the identification and description of the factors provide the framework for the nutrient recommendations presented inTables 11 to 16. Industry advisors representing various facets of the pork industry were recruited to review and challenge the concepts incorporated in this publication. Also, in situations where “gray areas” existed, these industry …
