An exotic disease is a disease that is not present in Australia.
If an exotic disease did occur in Australia it would cause· production losses, stock deaths and stop exports of primary production. When export markets are lost they can only be re-established once it is proven the disease is eradicated

Carpenter Ants And Control In Homes, Jay B. Karren, Alan H. Roe
All Current Publications
Carpenter ants are members of the insect order Hymenoptera, which includes bees, wasps, sawflies, and other ants. Carpenter ants can be occasional pests in the home and are noted particularly for the damage they can cause when nesting in wood. In Utah they are more of a nuisance rather than a major structural pest.
Producer Ownership In The Marketing Chain, Allen Prosch
Producer Ownership In The Marketing Chain, Allen Prosch
Cornhusker Economics
Pork producers continue to seek avenues to retain ownership of their product as it moves along the “Pork Supply Chain.” The activities being considered have the potential to improve the return that producers receive for their products. Many of the activities have broader implications to all production agriculture.
Divide And Conquer Marketing, Deb Rood
Divide And Conquer Marketing, Deb Rood
Cornhusker Economics
Why is commodity marketing so hard to learn? Whenever you start you become overwhelmed with information. You hear from one advisory telling you to sell puts, another is telling you to buy calls. You are told to cover your costs of production. They want you to watch the charts for a head and shoulders, which you thought was in the shampoo isle at the grocery store. Learning marketing can be confusing and daunting, causing many producers to just give up. But the hard fact is, that if you are selling grain or livestock some basic knowledge in marketing is a …

The Risks And Benefits Of Genetically Modified Crops: A Multidisciplinary Perspective, Garry D. Peterson, Saul Cunningham, Lisa Deutsch, Jon Erickson, Allyson Quinlan, Ernesto Ráez-Luna, Robert Tinch, Max Troell, Peter Woodbury, Scot Zens
Dartmouth Scholarship
Worldwide, the area planted in genetically modified (GM) crops has increased dramatically in recent years. Between 1996 and 1999, it rose from 1.6 X 106 ha to more than 35 X 106 ha (James 1998, May 1999). This rapid increase has provoked an explosion of concern, particularly in Europe, over the health and environmental impacts of these crops. Despite claims of safety and warnings against popular panic, public concern over GM crops has resulted in changes in their marketing, labeling, planting, and trade. These changes have fueled an increasingly heated debate among environmental advocates, critics of industrial agriculture, …
Nebraska’S Agricultural Real Estate Market Holds Steady, Bruce B. Johnson
Nebraska’S Agricultural Real Estate Market Holds Steady, Bruce B. Johnson
Cornhusker Economics
Despite the generally poor commodity prices during most of 1999, the markets for agricultural land remained relatively unchanged in terms of value levels and cash rental rates. Preliminary results from the February 1, 2000 UNL land market survey indicate a state all-land average value of $696 per acre, less than a 1 percent increase from 12 months earlier (Figure 1 and Table 1). For the state as a whole, the various classes of cropland moved slightly in both directions of year-earlier levels, with the 12-month changes being hardly more than the recent daily gyrations of the stock market. And though …

Wa Agricultural Growth And The State Economy Research Report Volume 2, Nazrul Islam, Helal Ahammad
Research Reports
The impact of state and national policies on the Western Australian (WA) agriculture can not be assessed realistically unless the distinctive characteristics of WA agriculture are taken into account. The objective of this paper is to develop and document an economic information base for WA agriculture by identifying and exploring the main characteristics of its production systems. The study reveals that agriculture plays a more important role in WA than in the rest of Australia (ROA). The share of WA in the national gross value of agricultural production and exports is much higher than her share in the national gross …

How Well Does Your Irrigation Canal Hold Water?, Robert Hill
How Well Does Your Irrigation Canal Hold Water?, Robert Hill
All Current Publications
Irrigation canals placed in native soil or lined with earth can have seepage water losses varying from 20 percent to more than 50 percent. Well designed, new compacted earth lined canals can have reduced seepage losses similar to concrete lined channels. However, consistent and regular maintenance is required to keep seepage losses low. Older concrete lined canals with deteriorated joints and frost heave or settled sections may also have high seepage losses and require rehabilitating.

Stocking Rate Guidelines For Rural Small Holdings, Swan Coastal Plain And Darling Scarp And Surrounds, Western Australia, Dennis Van Gool, Ken Angell, Lindsay Stephens
Agriculture reports
Small rural holdings are often owned by people who want to pursue a semi-rural lifestyle but who are inexperienced in land management issues. This can result in landholders stocking their properties with animals at rates higher than the land resources can sustain, leading to degradation problems such as soil erosion, water pollution and damage to vegetation. This document provides information and guidelines to help planners, developers, local authorities and land owners determine the base stocking rates for rural small holdings on the Swan Coastal Plain and Darling Scarp and immediate surrounds. The advice utilises Agriculture Western Australia’s rural stocking rate …
Pork Producers Face Challenges, Allen Prosch
Pork Producers Face Challenges, Allen Prosch
Cornhusker Economics
There is a lot of discussion about producers retaining ownership of their product as it moves to the end consumer. It is generally assumed that retaining ownership will allow the producer to generate additional income by participating in a bigger share of the final value. However, the price that the consumer pays does not come without cost. As producers examine the complexities of retaining ownership, the added risk and cost of these activities become more apparent.

Ec00-280 Hiring Dairy Personnel: Making The Process Easier, Jeffrey F. Keown
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Position descriptions are essential. A detailed position, or job, description can help you as an employer identify and eliminate applicants who will not perform well on the job and gives you justifiable grounds for terminating an employee who does not perform the job satisfactorily.
On most dairy farms, employees can be grouped into three categories: herd managers, feeders or outdoor workers, and milkers. This extension circular discusses the description for each category, how to start the hiring process, and questions that may be asked during interviewing and after hiring for a position on the dairy farm.
G1419 Community Supported Agriculture, Paul Swanson
G1419 Community Supported Agriculture, Paul Swanson
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide explains what community supported agriculture is, how it works and what producers will need to do to participate.
Most Nebraskans have not heard of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) but the concept is about three decades old in Japan and Europe and about 10-15 years old on the east coast of the United States.
In Japan, because of continued loss of farmland to urbanization and the migration of farmers to the city, a group of women approached local farm families with the idea of direct marketing produce from area farms to urban residents. This created an alternative distribution system …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
The common onion (Allium cepa) is the most popular and widely grown Allium in Nebraska home gardens. Many members of the onion family (Alliaceae) are used in flower gardens because of their interesting flowers and foliage, but here we're going to focus on the onion as a vegetable crop.
This publication will discuss the different types of onions and how to grow onions from onion sets, plants, transplants, and seed. It will cover the different cultivars found here in Nebraska, the nutrition, fertilizing, harvesting, curing and storing of onions.

Survey Of Pathogens In Poultry Litter In The United States, Mac Terzich, Melody J. Pope, Tim E. Cherry, Jessie Hollinger
Faculty Publications
Poultry litter is one of many components resulting from the production of broilers. Understanding poultry litter microbiological composition is very beneficial when attempting to improve the broiler's environmental conditions and searching for the best uses for this valuable industry by-product. The objective of this study was to collect samples of poultry litter throughout the United States and determine the presence of bacteria in the litter. Tests were conducted for total bacteria, Gram negative bacteria, Gram positive bacteria, Staphylococcus, Escherichia coli, and coliforms. Poultry litter samples were taken from 12 different regions throughout the United States and were analyzed …

Ec00-281 Body Condition Scoring Beef Cows: A Tool For Managing The Nutrition Program For Beef Herds, Richard J. Rasby, James A. Gosey, Don C. Adams
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Body condition scores (BCS) describe the relative fatness of a cow through the use of a nine-point scale and is an effective management tool to evaluate nutrition status of the herd.
This extension circular describes the nine-point body condition scoring system, relationship between body condition and productivity of the cow herd, and use of body condition as a management tool to develop and monitor nutritional programs. Incorporation of body condition scoring as a management tool can increase the profit potential of the cow/calf enterprise.
