Rental Agreements For Cover Crop Grazing, Jay Parsons, Mary Drewnoski
Rental Agreements For Cover Crop Grazing, Jay Parsons, Mary Drewnoski
Cornhusker Economics
Cover crops are becoming increasing popular throughout Nebraska and the surrounding region. As their name implies, cover crops cover the ground helping prevent soil erosion outside of the growing season for the primary crop. Below ground, cover crops also contribute to soil organic matter. Increasingly, people are looking at the above ground biomass produced by cover crops as a potential source of feed for cattle or other ruminant livestock. Technically, this would make them double cropped forages instead of cover crops but that is a topic for another day. For now, let's consider the fact that many of the crop …

The Founding Of The Robert B. Daugherty Water For Food Institute At The University Of Nebraska
The Founding Of The Robert B. Daugherty Water For Food Institute At The University Of Nebraska
Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Administrative Materials
University of Nebraska President J.B. Milliken drove to Omaha in to meet Robert Daugherty at his home. In the living room, the elder Daugherty was surrounded by Mogens Bay, his three sons and a covey of lawyers. Now 88 years old, the businessman had a reputation for being tough-minded and smart, a man who could intimidate, but also surprise with his ready sense of humor. In his long career, Daugherty had transformed agriculture and the rural landscape into the now familiar polka dot pattern, the signature of the center pivot irrigators Daugherty had popularized in the 1970s. He had started …

Vegetable Production Guide For Commercial Growers, 2016-17, Shubin Saha, Emily Pfeufer, Ricardo Bessin, Shawn Wright, John Strang
Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications
Successful vegetable production generally requires the grower to make daily decisions regarding pest management, irrigation, and cultural practices. Would-be growers unwilling to make serious investments of time (and money) should not attempt to expand beyond a space at the farmers’ market. It is important for vegetable growers to have a market outlet for their product before they choose to start production. Good marketing plans start with the customer and work backward to production. Potential growers should first determine exactly what buyers want, how they want it, and when they want it. They then must determine how these crops should be …

What Does A Sage-Grouse Eat?, David K. Dahlgren, Eric T. Thacker, Terry A. Messer
All Current Publications
Although sage-grouse may eat only sagebrush during the winter, knowing that they need to eat other foods at other times of the year helps wildlife managers implement projects that will ensure a balanced diet. By knowing what a sage-grouse eats and when, we can determine what we need to do to maintain and improve populations and their habitats.

Effects Of Quinolones On Hemolymph Enzymes Of Chinese Mitten Crab, Eriocheir Sinensis, Wang Haichao, Zhang Xingtao, Dong Zeng, Wu Xiao
Food and Machinery
Norfloxacin, ofloxacin and enorfloxacin, the most common used quinolones in aquaculture, were evaluated for the effects on hemolymph enzymes of Chinese mitten crab, Eriocheir sinensis. The hemolymphs were collected at regular time for detection of phenoloxidase(PO), peroxidase(POD), alkaline phosphatase(ALP), lysozyme(LSZ), superoxide dismutase(SOD), glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase(AST) and glutamic-pyruvic transaminase(ALT) after Chinese mitten crab were injected intramuscularly with quinolones at concentration of 5 μg/kg. The results showed that activity of PO, POD, ALP, LSZ and SOD increased respectively(P<0.05), and the effect of enorfloxacin experimental group was very obvious(P<0.01), and decreased to the normal levels as the control group at 96 h. The activity of AST and ALT after quinolones injection showed significantly lower during the experimental period(P<0.05). These results indicated that quinolones did not result in inhibition on hemolymph immune enzyme and damage on viscera organs. Moreover, quinolones showed immune enhancement on at concentration of 5 μg/kg.

Adding Genetically Distant Individuals To Training Populations Reduces Genomic Prediction Accuracy In Barley, Aaron Lorenz, Kevin P. Smith
Adding Genetically Distant Individuals To Training Populations Reduces Genomic Prediction Accuracy In Barley, Aaron Lorenz, Kevin P. Smith
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
One of the most important factors affecting genomic prediction accuracy appears to be training population (TP) composition. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of genomic relationship on genomic prediction accuracy and determine if adding increasingly unrelated individuals to a TP can reduce prediction accuracy. To accomplish this, a population of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) lines from the University of Minnesota (lines denoted as MN) and North Dakota State University (lines denoted as ND) breeding programs were used for model training. Predictions were validated using two independent sets of progenies derived from MN MN crosses …

Testing Usda Certified Organic And Non-Gmo Verified Project Labeled Foods For The Presence Of Genetic Modifications, Ryan Loren Phelps
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are plants or animals that have been produced using genetic insertion or deletion via technology (also called genetic engineering or GE). Merged DNA from different species creates combinations of plant, animal, bacteria and/or virus genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding.
Our goal was to determine the presence or absence of GMO markers in USDA Organic Certified and in Non-GMO Project food products. We investigated only corn or soy-based products that were purchased from many types of retailers. Our study was limited to products that contained a label for USDA organic certification and/or …

Producer’S Guide To Pasture-Based Beef Finishing, Gregory S. Halich, Jeff Lehmkuhler, Gregg Rentfrow, Fred Martz, S. Ray Smith, Lee Meyer
Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications
Beef cattle were routinely finished locally in Kentucky and other parts of the upper south before the 1950s, primarily on pasture with some grain or by-products from distilleries and grain processing mills. Cattle were typically born, raised, and finished on the same farm then sent to a local butcher where the meat was sold in nearby communities and cities. After the Second World War grain and transportation costs decreased dramatically and supermarket chains that required a large, steady supply channel were established. The combined effect of these changes made finishing in large centralized locations more economical. Over the next couple …

Using A Rising Plate Meter To Determine Paddock Size For Rotational Grazing, Jennifer W. Macadam, Sara R. Hunt
All Current Publications
For rotational grazing of pastures to be most successful, it’s important to match pasture production to ruminant intake, because both can change during the grazing season. This publication shows how a rising plate meter can be used to calculate available pasture dry matter, allowing pasture managers to optimize pasture utilization and ruminant production on pasture.

Explorations In Advancing Microalgae Productivity, Peter Neofotis
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis is part of an effort to advance microalgae cultivation for biofuel and high value products. The first chapters describe a large scale screening effort in which novel strains that hold great promise in large outdoor cultivation systems were isolated. Among these are strains of Scenedesmus obliquus, Borodinellopsis texensis, Chlorella sorokiniana, Ankistrodesmus, Coelastrella, and a previously uncharacterized species in the Chlamydomonadales. These species are characterized in terms of their phylogenetic relationship, biomass productivity, and, for some, lipid and carotenoid profiles under growth and stress conditions. Also discussed in regards to growth metabolism and oil …
The Importance Of Bioacoustics For Dolphin Welfare: Soundscape Characterization With Implications For Management, Heather Ruth Spence
The Importance Of Bioacoustics For Dolphin Welfare: Soundscape Characterization With Implications For Management, Heather Ruth Spence
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Sound is the primary sensory modality for dolphins, yet policies mitigating anthropogenic sound exposure are limited in wild populations and even fewer noise policies or guidelines have been developed for governing dolphin welfare under human care. Concerns have been raised that dolphins under human care live in facilities that are too noisy, or are too acoustically sterile. However, these claims have not been evaluated to characterize facility soundscapes, and further, how they compare to wild soundscapes. The soundscape of a wild dolphin habitat off the coast of Quintana, Roo, Mexico was characterized based on Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) recordings over …

South Africa's Agricultural Sector Twenty Years After Democracy (1994 To 2013), Jan C. Greyling, Nick Vink, Edward Mabaya
Professional Agricultural Workers Journal
Abstract
South Africa’s agricultural sector has undergone substantial policy reform since the dawn of democracy in 1994. Now, twenty years later, it is an opportune time to look back at this period to review key successes and failures. This article revisits South Africa’s context and policy at the start of this period, the reforms that followed, and evaluates the transformational effect (or lack thereof) on the sector. For this purpose, the article pulls from both qualitative sources and descriptive statistics to provide both a historical context and current perspective. The analysis shows that redistributive land reform and smallholder support programs …

A Historical Comparison Of Heifer Replacement Costs, Matthew C. Stockton, Roger K. Wilson
Cornhusker Economics
The value of heifer replacements is an interesting question which is affected by time (e. g. future cattle prices), animal longevity and the individual production and management system of the cow-calf producer. If we ignore the differences among producers we can study the effects that price and longevity have on the net value of replacement animals.
