Identification And Polar Lipid Composition Analysis Of Yeasts Isolated From Sufu Manufacture, Chen Si-Kai, Lin Sheng-Jie, Li Li
Identification And Polar Lipid Composition Analysis Of Yeasts Isolated From Sufu Manufacture, Chen Si-Kai, Lin Sheng-Jie, Li Li
Food and Machinery
In order to characterize lipid metabolism of yeasts during sufu manufacture, 23 isolates from sufu pehtze and acidic tofu whey were identified. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) was used to analyse the lipid fingerprints of 7 strains of yeast, after the determination of lipase activities. It is suggested that lipid fingerprint mainly includes 2 kinds of sphingosine, 16 kinds of amide, 22 kinds of ester and 3 kinds of fatty acid. Kluyveromyces marxianus SP-1 and Candida (Pichia) norvegensis SP-5 show highest relative amount of 2-Amino-1,3,4-octadecanetrio and N, N-Dimethylsphingosine, which indicates potential for sphingolipids synthesis. Candida ethanolica ATW-1, Pichia …

Genomic Insights Into Speciation History And Local Adaptation Of An Alpine Aspen In The Qinghai–Tibet Plateau And Adjacent Highlands, Jia-Lang Li, Lin-Ling Zhong, Jing Wang, Tao Ma, Kang-Shan Mao, Lei Zhang
Aspen Bibliography
Natural selection serves as an important agent to drive and maintain interspecific divergence. Populus rotundifolia Griff. is an alpine aspen species that mainly occurs in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) and adjacent highlands, whereas its sister species, P. davidiana Dode, is distributed across southwest and central to northeast China in much lower altitude regions. In this study, we collected genome resequencing data of 53 P. rotundifolia and 42 P. davidiana individuals across their natural distribution regions. Our population genomic data suggest that the two species are well delimitated in the allopatric regions, but with hybrid zones in their adjacent region in …

Aspen Next Generation: Conversations From Southern Colorado And Northern New Mexico, Dan Binkley, Bill Romme
Aspen Bibliography
Aspen trees and forests are especially important in the Rocky Mountains. Aspens add beauty to landscapes, foster high diversity and productivity of understory plants, provide for the habitat needs of many species of animals, and moderate fire behavior. There is a perception that aspen trees and stands are not regenerating well in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico; cohorts of trees younger than a few decades are scarce, at least in some areas. The next generation of aspen in the southern Rockies will be influenced by land use decisions, including harvesting, fire policy and management, and browsing by livestock and …
Feeder Cattle Future Price Spreads: Opportunities To Hedge?, Elliott James Dennis
Feeder Cattle Future Price Spreads: Opportunities To Hedge?, Elliott James Dennis
Extension Farm and Ranch Management News
First paragraph:
Feeder cattle future price spreads across all months have recovered to near pre-COVID-19 levels as quarantine restrictions and packing plant capacity issues have been mostly sorted out. For example, for the week of July 17, 2010 [sic], prices reached levels not seen since the beginning of March 2020. Pasture and corn progress are two factors that have the potential to push prices lower in the next coming months. Given current market conditions, producers have some options to lock in a margin.

#Goingtothefair: A Social Media Listening Analysis Of Agricultural Fairs, Julie A. Mahoney, Nicole Olynk Widmar, Courtney Bir
Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications
Agricultural fairs provide one of the last frontiers, and largest stages, for showcasing livestock agriculture to the public. However, public funding, attendance revenue, animal biosecurity, and public health concerns are all aspects worthy of conversation and increased research attention given the interaction between livestock animals and the general public in fair and festival settings. A prominent social media listening and data analytics platform was used to quantify online and social media chatter concerning agricultural fairs during a 27-mo period. A general search for online media referencing agricultural fair keywords was designed; social and online media mentions of agricultural fairs ( …

Evaluating Opportunities For Integrated Crop Livestock Systems In Eastern Nebraska, Elizabeth Kay Christenson
Evaluating Opportunities For Integrated Crop Livestock Systems In Eastern Nebraska, Elizabeth Kay Christenson
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Current agricultural systems focused on production of few commodities are facing production, economic, and environmental challenges. To address these challenges, Integrated Crop Livestock Systems (ICLS) have emerged through three primary methods 1) perennial grasslands for grazing and/or hay production, 2) crop residue grazing, and 3) cover crop grazing. To evaluate potential of ICLS mitigating current challenges, a field scale model ICLS was developed in 2015. The ICLS includes 4-ha each of ‘Newell’ smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis L.), ‘Liberty’ switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.), and ‘Shawnee’ switchgrass. The ICLS also included 8-ha of continuous corn (Zea mays L.). In …

Performance Evaluation Of Four Arkansas Table Grape Cultivars Grown On Three Trellis Systems Under High Tunnels At Two Locations In Arkansas., Jose Hernandez
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Grapevines (Vitis vinifera L.) are one of the most important horticultural crops world-wide. In the southern U.S. region, hot and humid climate accompanied by high pest pressure requires high levels of labor and pesticide inputs, making open field table grape production unsustainable. Previous research at University of Arkansas has demonstrated that table grape production under high tunnels (HTs) is a viable option to overcome biotic and abiotic challenges in the region. This project evaluated two HTs established in Arkansas. In the spring of 2014, at Fayetteville, three table grape cultivars (Faith, Gratitude, and Jupiter) were established in an 8 x …

Drivers Of Rural Development Strategies At The Farm Level: A Case Study On Circular Agriculture In The Netherlands, Anna Berger Mulder
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The sustainability of the agricultural sector worldwide is increasingly being pressurized by ecological, economic, and social developments. The Dutch government is promoting enhancing circular agriculture as an important rural development strategy in response to the challenges the sector is facing. All farmers in the country will have to be involved in closed cycles by 2030, but many farmers do not want to or cannot make this transition. This study aims to identify the different factors that influence a farmer’s decision to transition towards circular agriculture. Based on thirteen semi-structured interviews with already transitioned farmers, a policy officer, a consultant, and …

Effects Of Ndf Digestibility On Lactating Jersey Cows: Observed And Modeled Performance, Kirby Craig Krogstad
Effects Of Ndf Digestibility On Lactating Jersey Cows: Observed And Modeled Performance, Kirby Craig Krogstad
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Improving the digestibility of fiber and our understanding of how to feed it will optimize the ruminants’ niche in our society, which is to convert human inedible products to high quality protein in the form of meat and milk. Neutral detergent fiber (NDF) digestibility has been studied and modeled for decades, but it is increasingly important as livestock production is scrutinized for resource use and sustainability. Increasing the amount of NDF fed and improving models of NDF digestibility will improve sustainability by increasing the precision at which we feed livestock which results in less nutrient and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. …
The Role Of Postnatal Adrenergic Manipulation In The Mediation Of Fetal Programming Adaptions In Growth And Skeletal Muscle Glucose Metabolism That Persist In The Juvenile Iugr-Born Lamb, Rachel L. Gibbs
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Our 1st study assessed growth deficits in IUGR juvenile lambs and the benefits of treatment with adrenergic and inflammatory mediators. Growth metrics including bodyweight, rate of gain, and crown-rump length were diminished by placental insufficiency-induced IUGR through 2 mo. of age but were recovered by daily clenbuterol or curcumin supplementation. Body composition metrics indicated by bioelectrical impedance, proximate analysis, and loin size revealed that fat-free lean mass, specific muscle group sizes, and protein-to-fat ratios were reduced in unsupplemented IUGR lambs but recovered to or even past controls in clenbuterol-supplemented lambs. From these findings, we conclude that IUGR impairs postnatal …

Aging Horses By Their Teeth, Karl Hoopes, Patricia Evans, Nancy Jack
All Current Publications
This publication tells how to pinpoint a horses age, within a fairly narrow range, by examining its teeth. Being able to pinpoint age can be of use to owners of unregistered horses or horses whose age is unknown for any reason. Many health and nutrition management decisions are directly related to age and dental wear, making it even more important for all horse owners to have a general understanding of how a horse’s mouth changes with age. From a historical perspective, up until recently when organized associations started keeping birth dates on registered horses, most horse professionals took great pride …
Impact Of Covid-19 On Demand For Distillers Grains From Livestock Operations, Daniel Gertner, Elliott James Dennis
Impact Of Covid-19 On Demand For Distillers Grains From Livestock Operations, Daniel Gertner, Elliott James Dennis
Cornhusker Economics
Government and industry responses to COVID-19 cases have created a variety of unique situations in the agriculture industry. "Stay-at-home" orders forced consumers to be homebound, increasing the demand for food in grocery stores while reducing the need for food in restaurants. These caused a series of rapidly changing supply and demand conditions along the livestock supply chain. Meat destined for restaurants need to be repacked and reprocessed to make it compatible to sell in grocery stores. Meat packing plants continued to try to process harvest-ready animals, but a growing number of positive cases among plant workers forced idling, reduced plant …
