The Productivity And Botanical Composition Of Permanent, Temporary And Slot Seeded Grassland, J Fiala, J Gaisler, V Pavlu

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The development of botanical composition and primary production was followed from 1993 to 1995 at the southern side of the Jizera Mountains on three-cutting permanent, temporary and slot seeded grassland. Each grassland type was divided into 4 variants with various doses of mineral fertilization. The same clover-grass mixture composed of 5 components were used for the renovation by ploughing and slot seeding. During three years of the observation a very fast drop of the clover portion for the benefit of grass species and herbs was noted especially by the renewed grassland. Also sown grass species in the renewed grassland declined …

Cutting Date Effects Of Yield And Quality Of Unimproved Kudzu (Pueraria Lobata (Willd.) Ohwi.), T H. Terrill, S Gelaye, S Mahotiere, E A. Amoah, S Miller, W R. Windham

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Kudzu (Pueraria lobata (Willd.) Ohwi.), a vigorous, perennial warmseason legume, is considered a weed in the southern United States. It is tolerant of drought and low soil fertility and has potential as a low-input forage for livestock production. A field experiment tested effects of cutting date on yield and nutritive value of an unimproved stand of kudzu (10-15 yr old) in central Georgia. Yield measurements were made in June, July, September, and November, 1994, with forage samples taken to determine quality parameters. Soil fertility was unaffected by cutting treatment. Whole plant and leaf dry matter (DM) production and crude …

Long Term Weed Management Effects In Alfalfa, Randy Dovel, Mylen Bohle Jun 2024

Long Term Weed Management Effects In Alfalfa, Randy Dovel, Mylen Bohle

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Five herbicide treatment regimes were applied to spring and fall seeded alfalfa from 1991 to 1995 at two locations, Klamath Falls and Powell Butte, Oregon. Treatments were evaluated by measuring alfalfa crown and weed stand counts, yield, weed content and forage quality of all cuttings each year. Weed control treatment did not affect hay yield at Klamath Falls. Severe weed competition in 1991 caused lower yields in untreated plots in 1992 at Powell Butte. Weed growth was most pronounced in the first cutting at both sites. The presence of weeds did not adversely affect forage quality in any cutting except …

Effect Of Frequency And Intensity Of Defoliation On Oat- Vetch Mixture, M J. Arzadun, M H. Vallejos, M M. Piersanti

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of different cutting regimes on productivity and complementarity between oat and vetch in a mixture. The treatments were allocated in a factorial design on a split-split-plot disposition: they were 3 cutting frequencies (each 35, 70 and 105 days), 3 cutting heights (2, 8 and 14 cm above ground) and 3 crops (oat, vetch and the 1:1 mixture). Forage production (dry matter per hectare) and complementarity between species Relative Yield Total (RYT) were evaluated. The highest forage production (p- 0.05) was obtained with a cutting height of 2 cm and a frequency of …

Grazing Sheep On Revegetated Saline Pastures: Effects Of Season And Grazing On Morphology And Nutritive Value Of Saltbush, Atiq Ur Rehman, J B. Mackintosh, B E. Warren, D R. Lindsay Jun 2024

Grazing Sheep On Revegetated Saline Pastures: Effects Of Season And Grazing On Morphology And Nutritive Value Of Saltbush, Atiq Ur Rehman, J B. Mackintosh, B E. Warren, D R. Lindsay

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

This experiment was designed to determine the thickness of saltbush (Atriplex amnicola) stem grazed by sheep, grazing pressure on saltbush in the presence of understorey and the effect of season on the nutritive value of saltbush. Four 0.9 ha plots of Atriplex amnicola were grazed by a group of 10 Merino wethers each. The results indicated that the maximum diameter of stem selected by sheep under extreme conditions was only 1.5 mm. The number of stems chewed per 0.1m2 quadrat were 0.8, 9.6, 20.1 and 18.0 (P<0.05) after 2, 4, 6 and 8 wk. From January to June the nitrogen content (14 to 30 gkg-1) and DMD (0.65 to 0.72) of saltbush leaves remained high. These results suggest that in the presence of understorey the grazing pressure on saltbush was least and increases when the feed from understorey was exhausted. The nutritional value of saltbush did not deteriorate severely during the summer and autumn period.

Legume-Legume Complementary For Sustainable Pasture Development In The Tropics, M Peters, S A. Tarawali, R Schultze-Kraft, A Musa

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The use of legume-legume mixtures to alleviate limitations of individual species in legume based technologies was investigated in subhumid Nigeria. The results indicate the potential of legume mixtures, through processes of complementation and compensation, to reduce the risk of legume establishment and survival and thus ensure sustainable legume yields and percentages. The implications for on-farm adoption of forage legumes are discussed.

Productivity Of Silphium Perfoliatum L. In Low Input Agricultural Systems, G Pichard, R Cussen, F Moore

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

There is a large area in the coastal region of southern Chile affected by low productivity of soils and severe climatic limitations, which is owned mainly by small farmers. This research was conducted with dairy farmers producing an average of 20,000 liters/year whose main problem is cattle underfeeding because of severe seasonal cycles in pasture growth and extended overgrazing of natural grasslands of low production potential. Silphium perfoliatum L. is a perennial forage species that grows well during the summer period when grasslands have stopped their growth due to moisture stress and high temperatures. Based on the agronomic results and …

Dry Matter Production And Nutritive Value Of Forage Of Digitaria Eriantha Cv. Irene In Two Locations Of The Central Semi-Arid Region Of Argentina, C A. Frasinelli, H J. Petruzzi, J H. Veneciano, C M. Ferri, V V. Jouve, N P. Stritzler, O A. Terenti Jun 2024

Dry Matter Production And Nutritive Value Of Forage Of Digitaria Eriantha Cv. Irene In Two Locations Of The Central Semi-Arid Region Of Argentina, C A. Frasinelli, H J. Petruzzi, J H. Veneciano, C M. Ferri, V V. Jouve, N P. Stritzler, O A. Terenti

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The aim of this experiment was to compare dry matter (DM) production rates and nutritive value of a warm-season grass, Digitaria eriantha cv. Irene, in two locations of Central Argentina, Santa Rosa (SR) and Villa Mercedes (VM). The plants were established in two identical groups of plots, within a randomized block design. DM rates were calculated from serial, out of phase clippings, and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and crude protein (CP) content analyzed on subsamples. The study lasted for three consecutive growing seasons. Results showed that DM production rates were generally higher (P<0.05) in SR than in VM, but IVDMD and CP content showed no clear trends between both locations. DM production tended to lower from year 1 to 3, related to processes of N depletion from soils (VM) and diminishing rainfall (SR). It is concluded that D.eriantha is a very promising warm-season grass to Central Argentina. Data of nutritive value obtained in one location can be used in others, but results of DM production rates should be taken under the conditions where they will be used.

Separate Harvest Of Leaves From The Stems Of Lucerne Stands, L Schmidt Jun 2024

Separate Harvest Of Leaves From The Stems Of Lucerne Stands, L Schmidt

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Lucerne leaves have significantly higher crude protein and lower crude fibre contents than the stems. The present methods for separating the leaves from the stems have serious deficiencies. Early harvesting, for example, weakens the lucerne stand, and sifting after artificial drying impairs quality. Above that, preparation of leaf protein concentrates is rather expensive. Field trials with a pronged cylinder which strips the leaves from the stems produced leaf yields of ž 80 % with a stem portion of £ 15 % (containing ž 26 % crude protein and £ 18 % crude fibre in the dry matter). Lucerne leaves can …

Persistence Of Contrasting Perennial Ryegrass- White Clover Mixtures At Two Defoliation Frequencies, A Elgersma, H Schlepers

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Mixtures of two cultivars of perennial ryegrass with contrasting growth habits and three white clover cultivars differing in leaf sizes were evaluated at two cutting frequencies to study white clover persistence. A trial was sown in 1991 on a clay soil. The plots received no nitrogen fertilizer. Throughout the years, mixtures with the large-leaved clover cv. Alice yielded significantly more herbage dry matter and had a higher clover content than mixtures with cvs. Gwenda and Retor. Companion grass cultivar did not consistently affect yield, nor botanical composition. Cutting at 2 t DM ha-1 resulted in slightly higher total annual yields …

Evaluation Of Five Bahiagrass Cultivars In Southwest Florida, R M. Muchovej, J J. Mullahey

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Bahiagrass, mostly of the cultivar Pensacola, is the predominant grass in Florida and occupies two million hectares of the five million currently under pastures in the state. Several other cultivars exist and are available to ranchers through seed producing companies. This study compares five cultivars of bahiagrass (T-9, Pensacola, Argentine, Paraguay, and T-7) with respect to dry matter yield, nitrogen content, and digestibility in Southwest Florida. Evaluations were made at intervals of approximately 35 days from late June to early December. Forage production was greatest for T-9; this variety produced 35% more forage than Pensacola. All varieties behaved similarly regarding …

Effect Of The Cutting Frequency On Yield, Crude Protein And Mineral Contents Of A Panicum Maximum/Centrosema Macrocarpum Mixture, J Faria-Marmol, D E. Morillo, R Gonzalez, Z Chirinos

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Dry matter (DM) yield, crude protein (CP) and mineral composition of Panicum maximum-Centrosema macrocarpum association as affected by three cutting frequencies (28, 42 and 56 days) were compared in a tropical dry forest of Venezuela. No differences (P<0.05) among defoliation frequencies for any of the variables were detected. All mineral concentrations evaluated in Guineagrass (P. maximum) were considered adequate for grazing ruminants. In C. macrocarpum only P (0.24%) and N (0.08%) were close to critical level for deficiencies in ruminants. P. maximum-Centrosema macrocarpum mixture offered adequate levels for grazing ruminants for all nutrients evaluated.

Effects Of Three Cutting Frequencies On Yield, Crude Protein And Mineral Contents Of Centrosema Macrocarpum, J Faria-Marmol, D E. Morillo, R Gonzalez, Z Chirinos

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Dry matter (DM) yield, crude protein (CP) and mineral composition of Centrosema macrocarpum as affected by three cutting frequencies (28, 42 and 56 days) were compared in a tropical dry forest of Venezuela. DM yield and plant height were increased (P<0.05) by increasing the cutting intervals, whereas CP, ash and most minerals were not affected (P<0.05). Only P concentration declined (P<0.05) with increasing plant maturity. The lowest P concentration (0.18%) resulted from the longest cutting interval. Average CP concentration and mineral contents of C. macrocarpum were adequate with grazing ruminant requirements with exception of P (0.21%) and Na (0.073%).

Effect Of The Cutting Frequency On Yield And Crude Protein And Mineral Contents Of Panicum Maximum, D E. Morillo, J Faria-Marmol, R Gonzalez

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Dry matter yield per cutting and total production, crude protein content and mineral composition of Guineagrass (Panicum maximum Jacq.) as affected by three cutting frequencies (28, 42 and 56 days) were evaluated in a wet/dry tropical area in Venezuela. Only CP was affected (P<0.05) by the cutting frequency, decreasing (P<0.05) from 11.9 to 9.2 % as the harvest interval increased. Mean DM yield per cutting and accumulated over the 336-day experiment (661 and 5140 kg/ha) were low, probably due to low rainfall (600 mm) during the trial. Mean macro (%) and microelement (ppm) concentrations were: Ca, 0.9; P, 0.31; Mg, 0.45; K, 2,17; Na, 0.09; Cu, 11; Fe, 133 and Mn, 269, which were regarded as nutritionally adequate for grazing ruminants .

Productivity Of Pasture Consisting Of Both Unimproved And Improved Areas In Aso Region Of Kyushu District, C Okamoto, K Kabata, K Tsuji, M Kikuchi

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Productivity of pasture consisting of both unimproved and improved areas was investigated in terms of conversion efficiency of solar energy into products and nutrient intake of animal. It was shown that animal production is mainly supported by the improved area in spring and late-autumn while the production is supported together by both areas in summer by reasons of increases in productivity of the unimproved area and productive depression in the improved area. CP/DE balance of grazed herbage was close to the requirement ofthe animal in the case where the unimproved area was grazed with the improved area rather than in …

Grassland Productivity In The Indian Himalaya And Performance Of Introduced Temperate Forage Species In Cold And Semi-Arid Environment, J R. Sharma, A N. Ghosh

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Grasslands in the Himalayan ranges, particularly in the middle altitudes, are over-exploited by both sedentary and nomadic flocks. No systematic studies have been made to assess the productivity and carrying capacity of these grasslands so that suitable improvement measures could be adopted. A study conducted in the Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh (HP) at 2092, 2400 and 2895 meters above mean sea level (amsl) and varying soil conditions, showed that protection alone increased dry matter production between 9 and 188% over a three year period and average production in the third year from lower to higher altitude grasslands was 101.1, …

Effect Of Nitrogen On The Reserve Nutrients Of Rhizomes And Their Relation To Shoot Regrowth In Miscanthus Floridulus, Y C. Wang, M L. Lee Jun 2024

Effect Of Nitrogen On The Reserve Nutrients Of Rhizomes And Their Relation To Shoot Regrowth In Miscanthus Floridulus, Y C. Wang, M L. Lee

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

A 3-week-treatment of nitrogen dressings and of shoot cuttings were conducted on Miscanthus floridulus before the harvest. The nitrogen dressing increased the fresh weight and dry matter of the plants, but did not increase the plant height and shoot number. The reserved nutrients, especially the sugars and starch in the rhizomes were decreased by the cut treatments. Crude protein in the rhizomes was increased with the nitrogen amounts applied, though the carbohydrates were decreased. The decrease in reserved nutrients caused the growth inhibition of new shoots, and the more the reserved nutrients decreased the more severely was the growth inhibited. …

Sustainability Of Management Practices Of Mountain Pastures In Reunion Island (Indian Ocean), V Blanfort, P Thomas, G Balent, A Michon

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The grazing systems are an essential component of these volcanic highlands (1000-2000m). Our investigations consist of building up diagnosis tools and decision rules for a sustainable control of these fragile grazed ecosystems composed of native and sown pastures. The use of a systemic approach allows us to analyse the interrelationship between the vegetation dynamic and the agricultural practices through three biological indicators which relate to one hundred paddocks in six cattle farms. Concerning the vegetation dynamics, it seems that some management practices lead to a nonreversable degradation stage. As regards the forage system, the measure of sward-height and estimation of …
