This document is a thesis project submitted in partial fulfillment of the Master of Fine Arts degree in theatre. It is a detailed account of author Morgan Benson’s artistic process in creating the role Myra Arundel in Minnesota State University, Mankato’s production of Hay Fever in Fall of 2021. The thesis project chronicles the actor’s artistic process from pre-production through performance in five chapters: a pre-production analysis, a historical and critical perspective, a rehearsal and performance journal, a post-production analysis and a process development analysis. Silent and Deaf accessible theatre challenges the stereotypes many people have of theatre and introduces audiences to new perceptions of the artform. When it comes to theatre, one often thinks of long, multi-act plays with lots of spoken dialogue. This study presents an innovative active learning technique to support the development of civic education: a theatrical workshop based on the dramaturgy of Bertolt Brecht. I argue that the Brechtian workshop can develop three skills necessary for effective civic engagement: perspective taking, collaboration, and critical judgment/self-reflection, and that these skills are directly tied to the three civic values of pluralism, community, and civic responsibility. This phenomenological study reports an authentic collaborative project between students of acting and directing (AD) and students of Teaching English as Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) in University Sains Malaysia (USM). The project, which is integrated and infused with features of authentic learning and creative drama education, aims to provide the AD students with new learning experiences that are authentic in nature and that focuses on their abilities to direct a full theatre performance. From a Christian perspective, a virtuous female role strives to exemplify the traits in Proverbs 31: trustworthy, kind, industrious, selfless, strong, honorable, and God-fearing. ABSTRACT

Using an art-based research design this study explored a possible link between spirituality and the theatrical rehearsal process. Drawing from three pre-selected monologues, four participating actors and I engaged in an abbreviated rehearsal process. I met with each participant individually four times over the course of two weeks where they explored and rehearsed their monologue. We met again (individually) four weeks later to reflect on the study, and each performed their monologue one last time. All sessions were audio and video recorded. Using phenomenology as a lens of analysis, I investigate how immersive theatre engages audiences in a more direct and sensory way than traditional theatre. In a proscenium theatre the action is seen from the same angle. The theatre itself becomes a phenomenon in audience’s minds, each performance subtly influencing how the audience perceives the next.
