Forensic Accounting Education, Practice, And Career Path In Saudi Arabia, Mohammed Alzahrane
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The various high-profile cases of financial fraud that threatened to or led to the downfall of high ranking companies have reinforced the need to equip accounting professionals with the skills necessary to detect and investigate fraud. This study aims to evaluate forensic accountants' effectiveness in Saudi Arabia in meeting the needs of the judicial system and their clients. The study also seeks to explore forensic accounting in depth through the opinions, thoughts, concerns, conceptualizations, and experiences of Saudi judges who are routinely involved in forensic accounting cases. These cases often require expert testimony (i.e., cases involving, but not limited to, …

Honors Theses and Capstones
The implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has become somewhat of a hot topic within the modern business world. Many companies have chosen to embrace the potential that these systems have on the ways we can conduct business, while others are hesitant to “dip their toes” in the figurative waters of AI research and utilization. Auditing is no different from other industries in that firms are excited to see what potential these new innovations have in store for promoting a faster, more efficient, and more accurate audit. This review peers into how some Big 4 firms have made the first …

Fraud And Covid-19: An Unintended Downside Of Government Aid During The Pandemic, Derek Labarge
Honors Program Theses
Last year, COVID-19 brought an unprecedented global crisis to the world. As experts continue to analyze the virus itself, it is also necessary to study the aftermath of the pandemic. This includes any unforeseen consequences from the actions taken by people and governments trying to navigate their way through the chaos. This project aims to focus on one of these consequences: fraud. Past disasters and crises have unfortunately shown that these times of need for people are often when third parties, businesses, or even victims themselves take advantage of the situation for personal gain, often at the expense of those …

Academic models grounded in market efficiency and reputational principles argue that market firms value suffer investors punishment as consequence of international bribery allegations. However, there are indicators of potential mispricing when authorities reveal the details of the allegations. To reconcile this phenomenon, this research theorizes the influence of analysts revised expectations as moderators and/or mediators of the relationship between the reputational and economic penalties, and investors’ response. Findings from 124 documented cases (2007 to 2018) suggest that analysts positively moderate (not mediate) the relationship concerning reputational (not economic) penalties and stock returns in the short-term after the press release (three-day …

Inability Of Leaders Of Religious Not-For-Profit Organizations In New Jersey To Identify And Implement Adequate Internal Accounting Controls To Detect And Deter Accounting Fraud, Wayne Terrence Balfour
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study examined the inability of leaders of religious not-for-profit organizations (RNPOs) in New Jersey to identify and implement adequate accounting internal controls to detect and deter accounting fraud. Fraud affects all organizations negatively, including those that are religiously altruistic with good intentions. This study argued that protecting the organization’s resources rests primarily upon the shoulders of its leaders. Previous studies argued that philanthropic organizations were more prone to fraud because of poor management, enormous trust in their employees, and poor internal accounting controls. This multi-case qualitative study studied ten RNPO leaders, validating and contradicting some previous findings of not-for-profit …

Discretionary Dissemination On Twitter, Richard M. Crowley, Wenli Huang, Hai Lu
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
Using an unsupervised machine learning approach to analyze 12.8 million tweets posted by S&P 1500 firms from 2012 to 2016, we find that firms tweet more financial information around significantly negative or positive earnings announcements or accounting filings. Specifically, we observe a symmetric U-shaped relation between the number of financial tweets and the materiality of accounting information events. This relation is consistent with the theoretical prediction in Hummel et al. (2018) which assumes that managers are sensitive to their firm’s fundamental value. We document that this relation also holds for hyperlink usage in tweets about financial information around important events, …

What Are You Saying? Using Topic To Detect Financial Misreporting, Nerissa C. Brown, Richard M. Crowley, W. Brooke Elliott
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
We use a machine learning technique to assess whether the thematic content of financial statement disclosures (labeled topic) is incrementally informative in predicting intentional misreporting. Using a Bayesian topic modeling algorithm, we determine and empirically quantify the topic content of a large collection of 10‐K narratives spanning 1994 to 2012. We find that the algorithm produces a valid set of semantically meaningful topics that predict financial misreporting, based on samples of Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) enforcement actions (Accounting and Auditing Enforcement Releases [AAERs]) and irregularities identified from financial restatements and 10‐K filing amendments. Our out‐of‐sample tests indicate that topic …

Prior research indicates that most audit legal disputes settle. There is, however, little evidence of the factors that drive the settlement norm and its exceptions in audit legal disputes. To better understand these factors, we rely on theory related to how professionals manage risks and, as a result, how professions defend jurisdictional claims. We use this theoretical lens to help motivate four research questions that we probe by interviewing 27 prominent attorneys experienced in audit litigation. Consistent with our lens, our interview data indicate that attorneys manage their risks, including the risk of reputational loss, by settling based on their …

Chief Financial Officer Demographic Characteristics And Fraudulent Financial Reporting In China, Jinghui Sun, Pamela Kent, Baolei Qi, Jiwei Wang
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
We investigate whether management's cognitions, values and perceptions are associated with fraud for 18 863 firm-years for Chinese listed firms from 2000 to 2014. Demographic characteristics of the chief financial officer (CFO) are used as proxies for management's cognitions, values and perceptions. We find that fraudulent financial reporting is higher when CFOs are younger, male, and have lower education backgrounds. An analysis of inflated earnings, fictitious assets, material omissions and other material misstatements provide similar results, with the exception that CFOs with higher education levels are associated with more inflated earnings. Accounting and Finance

The study utilized financial data from 2017 IRS Form 990 filings of 644 U.S. nonprofit organizations with a 501(c)(3) tax exempt status. The researcher performed logistic regression analysis to determine and evaluate any associations between the financial variables and the existence of reported fraud. Three of the financial variables, cash growth rate (p=.001), asset growth rate (p=.046), and the ratio …

We use Chinese audit partner data to show that partners associated with financial reporting fraudinduce share price declines among non-fraudulent firms audited by the same audit partners. In cross-sectionalanalyses, we find that share price declines are more pronounced when low-quality partners (LQPs) failed to issuemodified audit opinions during the period in question and when the LQPs were from one of the Top 10 audit firms.Additional analyses show that investors impose larger penalties on contagion firms when fraudulent firms are largerand the time lapse between sanction and fraud commitment is shorter.
