Essays In Mutual Funds, Aadhaar Verma

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations

This dissertation examines mutual fund portfolio formation, the economic forces that determine how fund managers construct their portfolios, and the market effects of fund portfolio disclosures.

In the first chapter of my dissertation, I study how funds modify their portfolios around disclosure dates in order to cater to their investors’ non-financial preferences. Using social norms and investor boycotts surrounding tobacco and firearm sectors as a proxy for non-financial preferences, I find that these stocks experience significant negative returns on portfolio disclosure dates and significant positive returns on the day after the portfolio disclosure. I also find that funds accelerate their …

Managing Incomplete Data In The Patient Discharge Summary To Support Correct Hospital Reimbursements, Fadi Naser Eddin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The patient discharge summary is a document that conveys the patient's story to other healthcare practitioners, external users, and, most importantly from a financial perspective, health insurers. A defect or incompleteness in the patient's discharge summary will result in delays in the collection process through denial of the entire or partial reimbursement claim or, in the best-case scenario, delay until the discharge summary issue is resolved. The purpose of this project is to address the issue of the incompleteness of discharge summary from the perspective of healthcare providers, with the goal of understanding, diagnosing, and intervening in the research problem. …

Data Analytics And Audit Quality, Ru Gao, Sterling Huang, Rencheng Wang Nov 2021

Data Analytics And Audit Quality, Ru Gao, Sterling Huang, Rencheng Wang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We examine the impact of data analytics on audit quality. Using hand-collected information on data analytics skills of employees of audit firms, we find that human capital investment in data analytics improves audit quality. The analytics capability of both frontline and back-office employees contributes to audit quality. The effect is more pronounced for audit clients with complex business operations, for clients with complicated accounting estimates, and for clients that are more digitalized. Taken together, our findings suggest that an audit office’s analytics capability represents an important office attribute that can affect audit quality.

Is Public Accounting Eating Its Seed Corn? An Assessment Of The Outsourcing Of Tax Work, Timothy J. Fogarty, R. Drew Sellers, Dave Jones Oct 2021

Is Public Accounting Eating Its Seed Corn? An Assessment Of The Outsourcing Of Tax Work, Timothy J. Fogarty, R. Drew Sellers, Dave Jones

The North American Accounting Studies

For many years, public accounting firms have sent much of their tax compliance work to overseas centers for assembly and initial processing. This has achieved labor cost savings for the firms and is made possible by digital data conversion and the belief that the work itself has been commodified. Relocating the work that used to be done by US tax staff may have had some dysfunctional long-term consequences including inhibiting US staff skill and expertise development. This paper offers the data created by 27 interviews with US tax professionals to inform this domain. We also consider possible solutions suggested by …

Non-Gaap Earnings And Stock Price Crash Risk, Charles Hsu, Rencheng Wang, Benjamin C. Whipple Oct 2021

Non-Gaap Earnings And Stock Price Crash Risk, Charles Hsu, Rencheng Wang, Benjamin C. Whipple

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We investigate whether non-GAAP earnings disclosures increase stock price crash risk. Consistent with non-GAAP disclosures allowing managers to inflate investors’ perceptions about firm performance, our results indicate that income increasing non-GAAP reporting increases crash risk. We also find that managers can use non-GAAP reporting as a substitute for earnings management to withhold bad news from investors (the traditional explanation for crashes). Finally, we find a positive association between non-GAAP reporting and the likelihood of subsequent events that can trigger a crash. Overall, our evidence is consistent with some non-GAAP disclosures exposing investors to risks of large and sudden price declines.

Driving Marketing Efficiency In The Age Of Big Data: Analysis Of Subprime Automotive Borrowers, Edwin Baidoo, Ryan Matthews, Frances Ann Stott, F. Stuart Wells

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Big Data methodologies are applied to understand subprime borrowers in the U.S. automobile space. The focus on the automobile market is essential as this subsegment is responsible for directly and indirectly employing over one million people and creating payrolls in excess of $100 billion annually in the U.S. It is found in this article that if a subprime borrower is a homeowner, the probability of repaying their auto loan increases by almost 4%. However, if the borrower is renting, the likelihood of repaying their auto loan increases by nearly 1.4%. Applying Big Data in making subprime auto loans can add …

While gamification marketing is a low cost means to enhance user participation, empirical research of high granularity is lacking. This dissertation seeks to fill the gap by exploring how gamification narrative quality affects users’ value co-creation behavior in the B2C sharing economy model and the underlying mechanism.

Using the bike sharing industry in China as …

Contemporary Cost Management Techniques: The Appropriate Alternative To The Traditional Cost Accounting Systems Applied In The Iraqi Industrial Units – An Applied Case, Faiza Ibrahim Mahmoud Al-Ghabbana

Muthanna Journal of Administrative and Economics Sciences

The changes in the contemporary business environment have led to the need to develop traditional cost accounting systems applied to industrial firms, which focus mainly on the cost of manufacturing and ways to allocate indirect manufacturing costs to products. The main problem of research has been that traditional cost accounting methods are no longer suitable for application in modern business conditions where there is an increase in the use of technology and dynamic changes in customers’ preferences, global competition conditions, as well as challenges to the survival of industrial firms in the market. Modern cost management techniques therefore focus on …

The Power Of Unrequited Love: The Parasocial Relationship, Trust, And Organizational Identification Between Middle-Level Managers And Ceos, Youliang Liao, Bin Lin, Haiyan Zhou, Xi Yang

School of Accountancy Faculty Publications

Previous studies have found that CEOs manage their firms through traditional methods such as leadership and management practices. In this study, we investigate how the parasocial relationship (PSR) between middle-level managers and CEOs affects the organizational trust and the organizational identification (OI) of middle managers. We find that the PSR between middle managers and CEOs has a positive effect on the OI of middle managers, which is mediated by the organizational trust of middle managers.

Purpose: Middle managers and CEOs are the key components of a firm and are crucial to firm strategies and control systems. Middle managers play a …

Public Budgeting As Moral Dilemma, Ben Wroblewski Sep 2021

Public Budgeting As Moral Dilemma, Ben Wroblewski

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Government budget managers are responsible for the proper stewardship of public funds and facilitating the business transactions necessary to meet the public’s needs. Sometimes, during these decisions, managers can experience pressure to make an unethical decision. A better understanding of this issue can help organizations prevent misallocation of funds and adverse effects within the community. The problem is that the general pressure model lacks a framework to explain the decision-making process. Moral utility theory can provide insight into how people weigh or score choices with ethical considerations. This study found that government budget managers included their self-interests when experiencing tension …

The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act: How Investors Respond When Violation Severity And Corresponding Penalty (Mis)Match, Wioleta Olczak Sep 2021

The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act: How Investors Respond When Violation Severity And Corresponding Penalty (Mis)Match, Wioleta Olczak

Accounting Faculty Research and Publications

The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) has become a major focus for corporations, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and the Department of Justice (DOJ), as indicated by the dramatic increase in the number of FCPA enforcement actions and the level of civil and criminal penalties. Prior regulatory practice shows that the SEC and the DOJ struggle not only to evaluate the severity of a company's FCPA violation, but also to establish the penalty amount. Given the difficulty in assessing penalties, the severity of a company's FCPA violation at times appears mismatched with the size of the penalty. Leveraging signaling …

Cheating For The Cause: The Effects Of Performance-Based Pay On Socially Oriented Misreporting, Jessen L. Hobson, Ryan D. Sommerfeldt, Laura W. Wang

Faculty Publications

We examine the effect of performance-based pay on misreporting intended to benefit a social mission. We show that performance-based pay decreases people’s propensity to misreport for a social mission in a not-for-profit setting (Experiment 1). We similarly show that in a for-profit setting, performance-based pay also decreases misreporting propensity for a social mission, although not for a non-social mission (Experiment 2). Finally, using a framed field experiment with participants attending a conference hosted by a real charity, we show that performance-based pay reduces actual misreporting when misreporting leads to more donations for the charity (Experiment 3). These results are consistent …
