Insider Trading Restrictions And Real Activities Earnings Management: International Evidence, Yuanto Kusnadi, Yuanto Kusnadi, Jiwei Wang, Yujie Wang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We examine the implications of insider trading restrictions on firms’ real activities earnings management in an international setting. Using a sample of 28 countries over the period from 1992 to 2007, we find evidence that is supportive of the substitution hypothesis, in that managers have incentives to substitute accruals earnings management for real activities earnings management. This effect is found to be more pronounced for firms in countries with more restrictive insider trading regulation. Our result is robust to alternative measures of real activities earnings management and insider trading restrictions, alternative sub-samples, alternative regression specifications, and controlling for endogeneity. Mandatory Disclosures And Investment Efficiency: Evidence From The Conflict Minerals Disclosure Requirement, Ge Dong Sep 2022

Mandatory Disclosures And Investment Efficiency: Evidence From The Conflict Minerals Disclosure Requirement, Ge Dong

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

I examine the effects of mandatory disclosures on firms’ investment efficiency using the conflict minerals disclosure requirement of the Dodd–Frank Act of 2010. I find that firms’ investment efficiency improves following the adoption of the regulation. I then examine whether this improvement in investment efficiency is due to the regulation forcing managers to acquire new information and I document two important findings. First, I find that firms with a better internal information environment are more likely to experience improved investment efficiency. Second, I find that firms manage raw materials more efficiently and make changes to their supply chains after disclosing …

Revisit Bonds Market And Aggregate Output Nexus: The Malaysian Case, Aiman Safwan Ahmad Suhaimi, Ong Hway Boon

International Journal of Management, Finance and Accounting

The capability of the bonds market to channel savings to investors plays a significant role in promoting aggregate output.  However, some recent studies argue that the connection between bond market development and economic activities is uncertain. The purpose of this study is to examine how the bonds market in Malaysia may affect its aggregate output based on the period between 1990 to 2020.  The autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds test is applied to study the nexus of the bonds market and the aggregate output of Malaysia. The results suggest a positive effect of private and public bonds on the economy …

Perception Of Internal Controls Helps Explain Whistleblowing, Andrea M. Scheetz, Tonya D.W. Smalls, Joseph Wall, Aaron B. Wilson

Accounting Faculty Research and Publications

The nonprofit sector may suffer financially from inconsistency in regulations and polices surrounding internal control implementation. To address this issue, our study explores how perceived internal control strength differs between nonprofit and for-profit organizations. Furthermore, we examine three components of the Committee of Sponsoring Organization framework to determine which components might significantly influence whistleblowing for nonprofit organizations. As expected, all three components appear to significantly influence whistleblowing for those in for-profit organizations. For those in nonprofit organizations, the perception of control activities and monitoring activities significantly mediates the relationship between organization type and whistleblowing intentions. Finally, the data indicate that …

The Effects Of Csr Reputation And Csr Crisis Response Strategy On Investor Judgments, Clarence Goh Aug 2022

The Effects Of Csr Reputation And Csr Crisis Response Strategy On Investor Judgments, Clarence Goh

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

I use a controlled experiment to examine, in the context of CSR crises, whether investors’ investment judgments are influenced by a firm’s CSR reputation and CSR crisis response strategy. I find that for good CSR reputation firms, the use of a rebuild or deny crisis response strategy does not lead to improvements in investment judgments. However, for bad CSR reputation firms, the use of a deny response strategy leads to improvements in investment judgments while the use of a rebuild strategy does not.

Throughout the year, Americans may end up also paying sales tax, property tax, fuel taxes, various sin taxes, and estate tax, just to name a few. With so many ways to be taxed, some of which …

Full Disclosure: Model Uncertainty In Adjusting For Confounders, Dieudonne Dusenge Aug 2022

Full Disclosure: Model Uncertainty In Adjusting For Confounders, Dieudonne Dusenge

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the role of knowledge about underlying causal relationships in classifying controls in order to mitigate omitted- and included-variable biases. Using simulations and accounting examples, the study shows that the researcher may not distinguish good and bad controls because the underlying causal relationships are unobservable, and remedying strategies (such as the relative timing of measurement) may not remove the uncertainty in the classification. Because of the uncertainty about which controls to use, two or more models will be credible as will the distinct estimates derived from them. Next, the study shows that the current standard practice of singling …

Relationship Of Leader-Member Exchange On Role Stress And Burnout: A Public Accounting Perspective, Sammie Parsley Jul 2022

Relationship Of Leader-Member Exchange On Role Stress And Burnout: A Public Accounting Perspective, Sammie Parsley

Dissertations

An issue that concerns public accounting firms, both large and small, is that of employee burnout within the workplace. As a service-oriented industry, accommodating client needs is pivotal to long-term success. With that in mind, meeting client demands often means accountants must work long and strenuous hours, an attribute inherent to the industry. Consequently, public accounting firms often find themselves struggling with voluntary turnover as a result of burnout and opportunity for increased financial incentives elsewhere. The busy season in public accounting can be especially difficult, as accountants can find themselves working very long hours for weeks on end. This …

The Terrorist Laffer Curve:Rationality And Insurgency In Iraq, 2004-2008, Dennis S. Edwards Jul 2022

The Terrorist Laffer Curve:Rationality And Insurgency In Iraq, 2004-2008, Dennis S. Edwards

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

While the original framework by Arthur Laffer focused on tax rates and the resulting revenue from such taxation, the Laffer curve has been applied to other studies in behavior as well. This paper details evidence of a Laffer curve in Iraq with respect to terrorist violence and Iraqi public support of that violence against the U.S.-led coalition forces. As insurgents began killing more Iraqi citizens in their attacks on U.S.-led forces, the increased lethality caused initial support of such violence to erode. As a result, the high-level terrorist hierarchy has suggested that its operatives reduce lethality and indiscriminate bombings.

Equity Market Structure And The Persistence Of Unsolved Problems: A Microstructure Perspective, Robert A. Schwartz, James Ross, Deniz Ozenbas

Department of Accounting and Finance Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This article presents a brief historical perspective on the evolution of equity market structure and considers implications microstructure analysis has had for improving market structure. Since the 1975 Securities Acts Amendments mandated the development of a National Market System, the robust growth of institutional investing and the impact of striking technological change have been transformative. Yet, market impact costs and price discovery noise continue to accentuate short-period returns variance, and the article presents empirical evidence of how sizable that accentuation is. In dealing with this problem, the authors focus on the rules that govern how orders are integrated together and …

The Return Of The Call Auction, Deniz Ozenbas, Robert A. Schwartz

Department of Accounting and Finance Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

A call auction is a form of trading that died out in the precomputer age but has made its reentrance in electronic markets and is currently a significant component of major stock markets globally. In contrast with a continuous market in which a transaction is made any time a buy and a sell order meet or cross in price, call auctions batch orders together for execution in multilateral trades at specific points in time. The electronic call, an important innovation in market structure, has unique benefits concerning liquidity provision, intraday volatility control, and price discovery accuracy. NASDAQ introduced electronic calls …

Investigating The Impact Of A Conditional Cash Transfer On Adolescent Pregnancy: Incidence And Health Outcomes, Mitzie Irene P. Conchada, Marites M. Tiongco, Dominque Hannah Sy

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The literature on conditional cash transfers focuses on the impact of such on health and education outcomes. The Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program in the Philippines provides a cash grant conditional on requirements related to health and education. We investigated the impact of the program on adolescent pregnancy through its link to education. The program, which is designed to increase teen education, may lead to decreased adolescent pregnancy because it adds to the opportunity cost of getting pregnant. Though the incidence of pregnancy among adolescent women rates in the Philippines have declined over the past thirty years, a considerable number of …
