Diversification Of Orchestras’ Audiences, Musicians, Programming, And Revenues: Transforming The Relevancy Of German And U.S Orchestras To Their Communities, Dina Marie Weineck

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This thesis presents ways of how orchestras in Germany and the U.S can transform classical music into a vehicle for social improvement through the diversification of audiences, musicians’ body, artistic programming, concert experience, and revenues. The linkages between mission and funding models of U.S orchestras are being re-calibrated, striving for social relevancy and financial sustainability at once. This approach is contrary to the way in which orchestras have divorced their missions for on-site concerts as their primary product from off-site community programs as a secondary avenue. The purpose and mission set forth for these orchestras, respectively, must be viewed in …

Not For You, Not For Me, But For Us, A Case Study That Examines The Battersea Arts Centre's Co-Creation Models And How This Generates Symiosis Between Their Community And Organisational Resilience., Katharine Marchingo

Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai

There is much to learn from the Battersea Arts Centre (BAC) who remains at

the forefront of international arts practice despite the temporary loss of capital

infrastructure due to a tragic fire. This resilience is in part due to BAC’s

organisational model and investment strategy; but these aspects are only as strong

as organisational culture and community support allow them to be, these are

much harder to design and more nuanced in application

(Jubb Personal Interview 23 March 2018).

This report makes use of: action research, qualitative research, data that

was made available by the organisation and relevant literature to …

Global Ambitions: Positioning Singapore As A Contemporary Arts Hub, Su Fern HOE 2018 Singapore Management University

Global Ambitions: Positioning Singapore As A Contemporary Arts Hub, Su Fern Hoe

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This chapter has two objectives. The first is to critically interrogate the state’s efforts in utilising the visual arts as a means to position Singapore as an international arts hub and marketplace. As Kwok Kian Woon and Low Kee-Hong have noted, “Singapore’s cultural policy has everything to do with staying on top as a focal node in the late-capitalist world system of the new millennium” (Kwok and Low, 2002, p. 154). This chapter offers an overview of the programmes and initiatives introduced by the state from the 1990s to the present in order to encourage the entry of international art …

The Arts And Culture Strategic Review Report: Harnessing The Arts For Community-Building, Su Fern HOE 2018 Singapore Management University

The Arts And Culture Strategic Review Report: Harnessing The Arts For Community-Building, Su Fern Hoe

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The Arts and Culture Strategic Review (ACSR) was initiated in 2010 to chart the next phase of cultural development in Singapore. The final report, which was released in 2012, appears to propose a paradigm shift in focus for arts and cultural policy making in Singapore: from the desire to manage the arts and cultural sectors into profitable creative industries to the utilisation of the arts and culture as expedient tools for social cohesion and community building in Singapore. This shift has resulted in government programmes placing (renewed) importance and emphasis on “community arts” as a cultural activity. This chapter critically …

Nurturing The Cultural Desert: The Role Of Museums In Singapore, Su Fern HOE, Terence CHONG 2018 Singapore Management University

Nurturing The Cultural Desert: The Role Of Museums In Singapore, Su Fern Hoe, Terence Chong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The absence of official platforms and institutions such as museums and visual arts spaces; while the artistic amateur scene was flourishing, there were no museums or national galleries where collections of the best local and regional artworks could be found, appreciated and studied by artists and citizens. This cultural desert was the result of the government’s attention to bread and butter issues. How, then, did Singapore transform from “cultural desert” of yesteryear to a city with 51 museums and 118 art galleries in 2013, as well as an arts scene that saw more than 3.2 million visitors to the national …

Using The Fine Arts To Illustrate Degrees Of Innovation: From The High Renaissance To Cubism, Kimball P. Marshall Ph.D., Rene Desborde Ph.D.

Atlantic Marketing Journal

This paper applies the marketing innovation concepts of continuous innovation, dynamically continuous innovation, and discontinuous innovation to the fine arts to suggest challenges artists face in gaining acceptance of new styles. This paper reviews shifts in broad visual arts styles from the High Renaissance to Cubism in order to illustrate these marketing innovation concepts and to indicate the roles that marketing might play in generating market acceptance of new artistic styles. These marketing roles, as suggested by the four “Ps” of marketing (product, place, promotion, and price) become particularly evident with the development of Impressionism as an illustration of dynamically …

Diversity, Inclusion, Access, & Equity: An Analysis Of Otherness In Cultural Organizations, Cheyanne Jeffries

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

In an American society that is increasingly more multicultural and divers every day, diversity in cultural organizations has been the subject of much research dedicated to ensuring our cultural institutions and their boards, employees and overall organizational structure meet the rising demand for inclusion and equity in our nation. The American Alliance of Museums completed a national report in 2017 in which they found that "museum directors and board chairs believe board diversity and inclusion are important to advance their missions, but have failed to prioritize action steps to achieve it", among other key findings that identified a complete lack …

The Aaart Fund, Jill Jongen 2018 Sotheby's Institute of Art

The Aaart Fund, Jill Jongen

MA Projects

Art is no longer only perceived as an “investment of passion”. Rather, art constitutes a viable alternative financial asset class that can be exploited through strategic trading. Due to the lower volatility and lesser correlation with traditional assets, holding art in an investment portfolio offers diversification benefits that will maintain returns while reducing risk. However, acquiring the “right” artworks, that is, the ones that will appreciate in value, can be pricey and risky. Investors can overcome these two challenges through participation in pooled art investments such as THE AAART FUND.

THE AAART FUND, located in New York City, is a …

On Oahu, our local art scene is seeing a renaissance of sorts when it comes to contemporary art practices mixed with local flavor. Kaka’ako area is a great example of this. Kaka’ako and China Town on the island of Oahu are new venues and outlets of contemporary theories and methods of showcasing art and the new generations both social and economic ideologies that have been adapted for island life.

While all of this is happening, there still isn’t a place where creatives on Isle can go to create, collaborate and grow their artistry all in one permanent place. More often …

MA Theses

Perspectives On Sabbaticals And Job Satisfaction In Nonprofit Organizations, Beth Anne Spacht

School of Professional and Continuing Studies Nonprofit Studies Capstone Projects

For mission-driven organizations with limited resources to invest in employee salary and development, retaining top talent is a critical challenge. The monetary toll of turnover is particularly harmful to small organizations, which make up 66.3 percent of the nonprofit sector. To keep staff satisfied and incentivized to stay, nonprofits need to innovate creative new strategies to retain employees. The nonprofit sabbatical, a period of rest and renewal given to reward years of service, is one possible solution to reduce burnout and reward longevity. This exploratory study investigated the benefits and challenges of nonprofit sabbaticals in relation to theories of job …

Arts Education: A Philanthropic Priority?, Clare Murray 2018 Colby College

Arts Education: A Philanthropic Priority?, Clare Murray

Honors Theses

Through restricted donations, donors to private, independent not-for-profit US art museums are able to affect the prioritization of museum activities. Using annual data from museums’ Form 990s and AAMD survey responses, I test whether restricted giving affects a museum’s educational programming by analyzing the effect of restricted assets on education department performance indicators. I find that a percentage point increase in permanently restricted assets as a proportion of total assets is associated with a 0.1876 percentage point increase in education expenses as a share of total expenses. Through qualitative informational interviews, I recognize this impact as evidence that arts education …

Designing Narrative Artefacts, Jennifer Dempsey

Masters

This thesis documents an investigation that explored the use of narrative and material culture to present aspects of women’s lives from eighteenth-century Cork city to a twenty-first century museum audience. There were two objectives of this research. The first was to create a catalogue of elements from material culture through which these women’s lives would be revealed. The second was to use narrative to make this information accessible and engaging.

This research is linked with Nano Nagle Place, a heritage centre in Cork city that opened in 2017. The centre documents the life of Nano Nagle, an eighteenth-century philanthropist who, …
