Impact Resistance Of Ultra-High Strength Concrete Beams With Frp Reinforcement, Alex M. Remennikov, Matthew Goldston, M Neaz Sheikh Jan 2016

Impact Resistance Of Ultra-High Strength Concrete Beams With Frp Reinforcement, Alex M. Remennikov, Matthew Goldston, M Neaz Sheikh

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Composite materials, including Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) bars, have been used for decades in the structural and civil engineering sectors over traditional steel reinforcement. The main reasons for this are that FRP composites possess a number of advantages. They are non-corrosive, non-conductive, and lightweight and possess high longitudinal tensile strength. This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation into the effects of the use of glass FRP (GFRP) bars as internal reinforcement on the behaviour of concrete beams with high strength concrete (HSC) and ultra-high strength concrete (UHSC). Both static and dynamic (impact) behaviours of the beam have been …

Collusion-Resistance In Optimistic Fair Exchange, Yang Wang, Willy Susilo, Man Ho Au, Guilin Wang Jan 2014

Collusion-Resistance In Optimistic Fair Exchange, Yang Wang, Willy Susilo, Man Ho Au, Guilin Wang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Optimistic fair exchange (OFE) is a type of cryptographic protocols aimed at solving the fair exchange problem over open networks with the help of a third party to settle disputes between exchanging parties. It is well known that a third party is necessary in the realization of a fair exchange protocol. However, a fully trusted third party may not be available over open networks. In this paper, the security of most of the proposed OFE protocols depends on the assumption that the third party is semitrusted in the sense that it may misbehave on its own but does not conspire …

Resistance to pod shattering (shatter resistance) is a target trait for global rapeseed (canola, Brassica napus L.), improvement programs to minimise grain loss in the mature standing crop, and during windrowing and mechanical harvest. We describe the genetic basis of natural variation for shatter resistance in B. napus and show that several quantitative trait loci (QTL) control this trait. To identify loci underlying shatter resistance, we used a novel genotyping-by-sequencing approach DArT-Seq. QTL analysis detected a total of 12 significant QTL on chromosomes A03, A07, A09, C03, C04, C06, and C08; which jointly account for approximately 57% of the genotypic …

Analysis Of Fishscaling Resistance Of Low Carbon Heavy Plate Steels, Aiwen Zhang, Zhengyi Jiang, Dongbin Wei, Sihai Jiao, Chun Xu Jan 2014

Analysis Of Fishscaling Resistance Of Low Carbon Heavy Plate Steels, Aiwen Zhang, Zhengyi Jiang, Dongbin Wei, Sihai Jiao, Chun Xu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The precipitates and hydrogen permeation behavior in three kinds of hot rolled low carbon heavy plate steels for enameling were analyzed; then, both sides of the steels were enameled. The experimental results show that a large amount of coarse Ti4C2S2 and fine Ti(C, N) particles exist in the optimized Ti-bearing steel, quite a lot of fine Ti(C, N) particles exist in the optimized carbon steel, but only a little bit fine Ti(C, N) particles exist in the carbon steel. The fishscaling resistance of the steels can be correlated to the effective hydrogen diffusion coefficient, and a model of correlation between …

Utilising Confinement Reinforcement For Shear Resistance In Reinforced Concrete Structures, Kamal Jaafar Jan 2013

Utilising Confinement Reinforcement For Shear Resistance In Reinforced Concrete Structures, Kamal Jaafar

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Common transverse reinforcement of reinforced concrete members with circular cross-section consists of round ties or spirals. Its purpose in members that are not subjected to significant shear loading is to provide proper confinement for concrete, and eliminate buckling of the longitudinal reinforcement bars. If spirals are to be used as both shear enabler and confiner for reinforced concrete beams then, under combined action of moment and shear, spirals will be required to provide or contribute to proper shear resistance. Hence, a proper assessment for spiral shear contribution is required. The validity of concepts which underline current methods for shear design …

Modeling And Experimental Investigation Of Rotational Resistance Of A Spiral-Type Robotic Capsule Inside A Real Intestine, Hao Zhou, Gursel Alici, Trung Duc Than, Weihua Li Jan 2013

Modeling And Experimental Investigation Of Rotational Resistance Of A Spiral-Type Robotic Capsule Inside A Real Intestine, Hao Zhou, Gursel Alici, Trung Duc Than, Weihua Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this study, the rotational resistance of a spiral-type capsule rotating inside a small intestine is investigated by in vitro experiments and analytical modeling, on which a limited literature is available. The results presented exhibit viscoelastic nature of the intestinal tissue. The significance of various spiral structures and rotating speeds is quantitatively evaluated from the propulsion point of view. Also, an analytical torque model is proposed and subsequently validated. The close match between the experimental results and numerical results from the model shows that the model is reasonably accurate to estimate the rotational resistance torque of the small intestine. Both …

Modification Of A Polyamide Reverse Osmosis Membrane By Heat Treatment For Enhanced Fouling Resistance, Takahiro Fujioka, Long D. Nghiem Jan 2013

Modification Of A Polyamide Reverse Osmosis Membrane By Heat Treatment For Enhanced Fouling Resistance, Takahiro Fujioka, Long D. Nghiem

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The use of heat treatment to improve solute rejection and fouling resistance of a polyamide reverse osmosis (RO) membrane was investigated in this study. Heat treatment was carried out by immersing the membrane samples in Milli-Q water at 70 degrees celcius for a specific duration. Heat treatment reduced the pure water permeability from 4.1 to 2.8 L/m2 bar but improved conductivity rejection from 95.5 to 97.0 percent. As a result, a correlation was observed between changes in the two parameters. Marginal changes in the membrane surface characteristics were observed as a result of heat treatment. Heat treatment significantly improved the …
