Library Faculty Research and Publications
This poster explores the security, privacy and ethical considerations confronted in supporting digital media courses. Of particular importance to this presentation is the increased role digital storytelling and video composition plays in student learning. Supporting this shift in curriculum, librarians have the opportunity to facilitate an intelligent and integrated move toward the use of these digital tools in classrooms and participate in educating students on media literacy. Librarians supporting the Digital Media Studio at Marquette University share their techniques in educating students on intellectual property issues and in navigating security and privacy problems with shared equipment.

Sorry to disappoint, but this talk is not the ultimate guide on how to avoid working. It is instead an example of a workflow paradigm shift and supportive technology that will allow us to use the eight hours at our desks more efficiently.
Working in higher education, we are continuously faced with budget cuts that directly impact the amount and variety of our daily tasks. The official job descriptions barely reflect the actual day-to-day work we encounter: we wear many hats and have to carefully manage our time as well as the increasing number of projects. Tedious maintenance of content …

Supporting Digital Video Composition In The Library: A New Opportunity For Instruction, Elizabeth Andrejasich Gibes
Library Faculty Research and Publications
Digital technologies are transforming curriculum at a rapid pace as more faculty integrate digital media into student assignments. Faculty may be assigning video composition and other digital media, but how much do students really know about integrating media? Intellectual property? Visual literacy? Librarians have the opportunity to facilitate an intelligent and integrated move toward the use of these digital tools in classrooms and participate in educating students on media literacy. This presentation explores the information and media literacy considerations in multimodal projects, and will highlight how librarians can use sites such as Flickr, YouTube, Sound Cloud and Google Image Search …

In the fall of 2012 Sturgis Library began investigating new collection development methods for serving the needs of students and faculty at Kennesaw State University (KSU), with the intent to enhance both collection and service excellence. One area targeted for improvement beginning in FY2013- 2014 was interlibrary loan service. With over 10,000 borrowing requests in FY 2011 -2012, Library Administration engaged the newly hired Collection Development Librarian and the ILL Paraprofessional to begin investigating and implementing a robust electronic book DDA (Demand Driven Acquisitions) program in conjunction with a PDA (Patron Driven Acquisitions) program. Open Culture At The Heart Of The University: Libraries As Multicommons, Anna K. Gold
Open Culture At The Heart Of The University: Libraries As Multicommons, Anna K. Gold
Anna K. Gold
The university library can be reconceptualized as a powerful engine for open culture. A generative and regenerative center that naturally brings disciplines, cultures, and generations together, the university library can expand its role in open culture far beyond sharing institutionally-produced research and data through open repositories. Drawing on the experience of a public polytechnic university, this presentation documents the emergence of a university library as a system of open culture programs and as a place where a speeding culture can stop to dialogue, think, and create: generating collective interactive learning; fostering collaboration with open data; cultivating open conversations and learning …

Since 2009 Eastern Illinois University (EIU) has hosted the Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy (JCBA), the annual journal of the National Center for the Study of Collective Bargaining in Higher Education and the Professions. The journal compiles the best research, op-eds, and practitioner perspectives on the subject of collective bargaining in higher education, a particularly important subject in the past half-decade of economic constriction, salary stagnation, and pension pressures. This presentation will demonstrate that institutional repository open access does dramatically improve discoverability by comparing logs from the locally hosted platform to usage statistics from Digital Commons. Differences in …

Pacific Northwest archives experimented with sharing grant-supported personnel in an effort to maximize and leverage resources. Discussing their experience with projects funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) and Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), the panelists share the benefits of moving resources and personnel to a consortia and how this affected their ability to focus on teaching, collection development, and advocacy. An audience discussion of the feasibility and sustainability of shared personnel follows brief project overviews.

In an effort to address ever-shifting staffing levels and evolving service demands, staff in the Research & Instructional Services department of The D.B. Weldon Library at Western University developed and implemented a new and strategic approach to structuring their work. The ‘Portfolio Model’ provides a framework for organizing the primary functions of the department - collections, instruction and reference - while at the same time preserving liaison at its core. Through a close examination of this grassroots effort and in particular, the achievements realized and challenges faced by the team of librarians and library assistants who together comprise the ‘Instruction …

Learning Outcomes Assessment In An Undergraduate Class: Are They Learning?, Marg Sloan
Marg Sloan
Librarians have been refining their information literacy assessment methods since the 1990′s closely tying these assessment measures to clearly articulated learning outcomes as defined in the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards. An assessment plan was developed and implemented in conjunction with four information literacy sessions offered to students enrolled in a required course in the Women’s Studies Undergraduate Program at the University of Western Ontario. Hear how one librarian implemented an assessment plan and what she learned in the process. Results of this research will inform how best to assess library instruction in support of undergraduate student learning.
