Nonverbal communication may have an effect on people’s perceptions of themselves and their performance on certain tasks. When people receive some type of positive feedback while performing an assignment, they may overestimate the extent to which the task was successfully completed. During this study, 22 participants were asked to take three short spelling tests, then evaluate their performance on each test. For one of the tests, the researcher provided words of encouragement and nods of approval while scoring the test. There was no feedback given during the scoring of the other two tests. Shakespeare’s King Lear is riven by troubled, and troubling, concerns with the efficacy of fiction to instill virtue in its audience – a concern heightened during this time by Puritan arguments denouncing the sinfulness of performance and the immorality of fiction in any form. In the figure of Edmund, Shakespeare seems to address these concerns, and perhaps conclude that stage fictions are fragile vessels for moral instruction. The critical reception of King Lear, originating with Johnsonian aversion at the unendurable and anti-providential nature of its ending, struggles to reconcile the miseries the play inflicts upon its audience with the …

This study examines the relationships between group faultlines, appraisals (evaluations) of group members, emotional responses, and performance in groups. The study uses a 2 by 2 experimental design, crossing demographic alignment (alignment vs. no alignment) and appraisals (instrumental vs. intrinsic) as between-subjects variables. Data from 5 types of measurement were used to analyze the effects of member alignment and appraisals.

The role of small business, as part of the value adding chain in any economy, should never be understated. In Australia small business represents 96% of all private sector business, accounts for 47% of all private sector employment and the majority fail within three to five years of establishment. It is well known that elevations in body temperature can impair both physical and cognitive performance. For helicopter pilots, the major heat source during flight originates from solar radiation. However, when nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) protective clothing is worn, metabolic heat generated during the pre-flight period, and during the mission, is trapped, exacerbating thermal strain. In this project, the hypothesis that elevations in body heat content would degrade flight performance was tested. Helicopter pilots completed three, two-hour flight simulations under three levels of thermal strain, administered in a balanced order. This study tested the transformational leadership theory among managers at functional levels in United Arab Emirates (UAE) banks. The UAE banking sector was chosen due to its importance in the U.A.E. economy and its significant contribution to the Emirates GDP. The paper examines the effects of both transformational and transactional leadership styles of bank managers/supervisors on employees’ satisfaction and self-perceived performance. Self-esteem and leadership disposition (Romance of Leadership) of employees were hypothesized to act as moderators. Based on a four year empirical study investigating employee responses to the implementation of a performance appraisal (PA) process in an underground coal mine, this paper contributes to the small but growing body of literature that examines employee responses to HRM interventions. The paper is constructed around seven key research questions recentring the employee as the discursive subject of HRM. A careful interrogation of employee responses to having their performance appraised indicates that this individuating HRM process occasions considerable disruption to miners’ occupational selves and leads to unintended consequences for the miners, for their working relationships, and for their contributions …

There are two Connecticuts described in public education circles: One Connecticut includes a set of school systems that are suburban, educating primarily white and/or Asian students. The other set of Connecticut schools systems is urban, comprised primarily of students of color, and of low socio-economic status. The purpose of this chapter is to focus on the latter set of schools, provide some history of their development, look at the indicators of poor progress in more detail, review options of ameliorating the urban school systems, including assessments of state efforts so far, and offer some perspectives and conclusions.

This study analyzes the relationship between professional wrestling as performance and its fans. For decades, professional wrestling has been characterized as a fraudulent sport of scams and illusion rather than actual and fair competition between athletes. Why then is wrestling so popular? I pursue the question by taking a close look at professional wrestling in four different cultural venues or sites of production: the historical archive, the live wrestling event, the televised event, and the Internet. In each site, I focus on what components define professional wrestling, how they operate, and what appears to be their purpose. Drawing on Neil …
