Cultivating Resilience : Antidotes To White Fragility In Racial Justice Education, Katherine E. Roubos

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study explores what skills, tools and approaches may be helpful antidotes to white fragility in racial justice education. This study is in response to the challenge posed by white fragility, as defined by Robin DiAngelo (2011) in which white people experience such extreme emotions in response to learning about racism in the USA that they become either defensive such that they are unable to engage in a learning experience, or so swept up in guilt or shame that they require substantial emotional tending in order to continue to engage in the educational experience. Robin DiAngelo frames this phenomenon …

The findings indicate that all of the clinicians experienced a positive direction of association between daily …

Sharing Our Edges : The Mindfulness Influence On Therapist's Formulation Of Insight, Sonia S. Hsieh Jan 2015

Sharing Our Edges : The Mindfulness Influence On Therapist's Formulation Of Insight, Sonia S. Hsieh

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This inductive qualitative research study explored therapist's experiences of using Mindfulness in session with patients. Through 12 semi-structured interviews with therapists who self-identified as Mindfulness practitioners with a psychodynamic orientation, narrative data was gathered on participant's explicit and implicit uses of Mindfulness within the therapeutic encounter. Major findings revealed that Mindfulness first and foremost attunes the therapist's attention to the body. Therapist's awareness of personal bodily sensations then initiated the therapist's process of understanding disavowed content from the patient. Upon pinpointing the therapist's own bodily sensation, participants then discussed how tenets of Mindfulness informed their therapeutic presence. Qualities of this …

A clinical sample of 69 adults, who were currently in sober recovery or in treatment for an AUD, were administered a quantitative survey to assess various characteristics, which included: current depression, anxiety and stress levels; current alcohol use and related problems; and how they treat themselves during difficult times. Major findings were that …

Therapeutic Presence : An Exploration Of Buddhist Mindfulness, Winnicott And Neuroscience, Susan A. Shelby Sep 2014

Therapeutic Presence : An Exploration Of Buddhist Mindfulness, Winnicott And Neuroscience, Susan A. Shelby

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

There has been an explosion of interest in mindfulness within contemporary Western society and across diverse disciplines, including the mental health field with enthusiasm for the promise of how mindfulness enhances psychotherapy. It has been proposed that mindfulness training offers a tremendous resource for cultivating those desirable qualities present in a strong therapeutic relationship. In light of the importance of the therapeutic alliance and the promise of mindfulness, this theoretical thesis presents the nature of mindfulness from a Buddhist perspective and explores how mindfulness informs the therapeutic process and potentiates a clinician's therapeutic presence. The psychodynamic concepts of D.W. Winnicott …

An Investigation Of Racism And Its Emotional Cost : How Mindfulness And Perceptions Of Control Shape Role-Related Beliefs And Behavior, Trina M. Zahller

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this research was to explore potential correlations between mindfulness and racism among White meditation practitioners. The secondary purpose was to investigate how locus of control may moderate those correlations. This research was carried out with the goal of identifying ways in which anti-racism programs could be more effective, the role mindfulness might play in future anti-racism programming, and how cultural messages about control might shape relationships between mindfulness and racism. Variations among style and degree of mindfulness practice were also assessed. Participants filled out an online survey that included scales to assess their self-reported racial animosity, emotional …

Clinician Perspectives On Using Mindfulness-Baed Therapeutic Intervention When Working With Veterans, Lindsay E. Stonecash Sep 2013

Clinician Perspectives On Using Mindfulness-Baed Therapeutic Intervention When Working With Veterans, Lindsay E. Stonecash

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this research study was to explore clinicians' perspectives on using mindfulness practices with veterans suffering from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other stress-related problems. While applying mindfulness techniques in clinical settings is not new to mental health fields, researchers have yet to agree on an explicit definition of mindfulness, and amid growing support for its efficacy, it remains to be categorized as evidence based practice for PTSD. Due to the high need for more widely available treatment interventions for veterans with PTSD, researchers are exploring the potential for mindfulness to be broadly applicable among populations seeking PTSD …

From Anxiety To Panic Disorder : Effectiveness Of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy And Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction As Treatment In Adolescence, Carrie-Anne Swiatek Jan 2013

From Anxiety To Panic Disorder : Effectiveness Of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy And Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction As Treatment In Adolescence, Carrie-Anne Swiatek

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Research has shown that mental illness often surfaces during adolescence and early adulthood, and can frequently extend throughout adulthood. Without treatment, the consequences of mental illness for individuals and society can be overwhelming. Untreated individuals often fall victim to unnecessary disabilities, unemployment, substance abuse, homelessness, inappropriate incarceration, comorbid health issues and even suicide. Further, there is a continuing need for supportive services for adolescents who are specifically diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, such as panic disorder, and who self-identified as having excessive anxiety and other stress-related symptoms. Research has shown the cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness-based treatment interventions may be effective for …

Meditation & Mindfulness In Dialectical Behavior Therapy : An Exploration Of Therapists' Experiences With Personal Meditation And Mindfulness Practices, Felicia Marohn

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The majority of mindfulness research conducted over the past two decades has examined client improvements and far fewer studies have connected the benefits of meditation and mindfulness to skills and well-being of psychotherapists. In this exploratory study, I examined how therapists who practice Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) experience a personal meditation and mindfulness practice. The goal was to explore DBT therapists' attitudes and perceptions regarding potential benefits of meditation and mindfulness, changes over time in meditation and mindfulness, and best avenues to acquire as well as maintain meditation and mindfulness skills. I drew from theories of classical Buddhism, contemporary mindfulness …

Clinical Use Of Music As An Adjunct To Evidence-Based Treatment For Treating Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Levin Jaered Sibley-Schwartz Aug 2011

Clinical Use Of Music As An Adjunct To Evidence-Based Treatment For Treating Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Levin Jaered Sibley-Schwartz

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Substantial efforts have been made to provide evidence based therapeutic treatment for combat veterans seeking mental health services for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Due to the clinical complexity of PTSD, discovering a muti-effect approach treating both the diagnostically significant PTS symptoms as well as the non-diagnostic associated features of PTSD would be beneficial. This independent investigation was developed to explore the relationship of music to the current evidence-based treatment practices for PTSD. The researcher explored the relationship between the physiological, psychological and social effects of both music and PTSD, the mechanisms of change intrinsic to PTSD therapy, and the clinical …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Self-Compassion And Burnout In Practicing Psychotherapists : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Jennifer Ann Thurlow Nov 2010

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Self-Compassion And Burnout In Practicing Psychotherapists : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Jennifer Ann Thurlow

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Burnout is particularly a problem among people whose work involves responding to human suffering; therefore, without adequate personal resources to draw from, psychotherapists are especially at risk. Self-compassion is a powerful coping skill, thus therapists may be protected from burnout through the practice. The purpose of this study was to examine how self-compassion is related to burnout in practicing psychotherapists. It was hypothesized that higher total self-compassion scores would be associated with lower scores on the burnout subscales of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization and that higher scores of total self-compassion would be associated with higher scores on the burnout subscale …

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study investigated the use of mindfulness by therapists treating trauma victims. The purpose of this study was to better understand ways in which a mindfulness practice, such as yoga and/or meditation, can affect the experience of secondary trauma in trauma therapists working with clients who are diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Six female trauma therapists working with the VA system in Colorado were interviewed. Each participant was asked to reflect upon their experiences with secondary trauma and how their mindfulness practice has impacted both their personal and professional lives. Participants were all at least Master level …

The Use Of Dialectical Behavior Therapy For Treating Juvenile Delinquents : How Mindfulness Mediates Trauma Symptomatology And Reduces Anti-Social Behavior, Ashley Emma Sitkin Sep 2010

The Use Of Dialectical Behavior Therapy For Treating Juvenile Delinquents : How Mindfulness Mediates Trauma Symptomatology And Reduces Anti-Social Behavior, Ashley Emma Sitkin

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Youth within the U.S. juvenile justice system are among the most traumatized. There is a need for trauma sensitive treatment in order to address the mental health needs of traumatized, delinquent youth and prevent re-traumatization within the juvenile justice system. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a promising treatment for juvenile delinquents with trauma histories. This thesis posits that DBT for delinquent youth supports rehabilitation through the mechanism of mindfulness by targeting posttraumatic stress reactions, which in turn may reduce anti-social behaviors. A review of the literature appears to support the hypothesis that through decreased experiential avoidance and enhanced emotional regulation …
