Booklists ... librarians love them, but they also raise many questions. This session explores where today's libraries fit in the dichotomy between what we 'should read,' what we 'want to read.' Our first stop on this exploration will be the concept of a booklist. Highlights of this part of the adventure will be: testing attendee's knowledge of current booklists, a review of booklist sources, and identification of OCLC booklist highlights. It is too easy for teachers and library media specialists to entangle themselves in the multiple strands of standards: State core curriculum content standards, National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NETS.S), National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS.T), and the Information Literacy Standards (ALA). To prevent teachers from drowning professionally in this vast sea of accountability, the author presents an exercise that untangles the standards and helps teachers to align their teaching style with immediately accessible instructional technologies. This paper describes the development of an instruction/orientation platform that teaches students, specifically the distance education students, at our university how to access, navigate, and understand the services and resources available to them via the university library. However, there is another purpose to this paper that the authors believe to be just as valuable to other “new voices” in our profession. To that end, this paper examines how two new librarians attempted to better serve their patrons. Rediscovering Toscanini: The Man Behind The Legend, Mark Mcknight, Susannah Cleveland

Focuses on the Don Gillis Collection, which the University of North Texas Music Library acquired after Gillis's death in 1978. Gillis, a longtime associate of Arturo Toscanini, served as the conductor's assistant and the producer for the NBC Symphony broadcast concerts from 1944 until they ended ten years later. The collection includes hundreds of tape recordings, among them complete tapes of the NBC Radio programsToscanini: The Man Behind the Legend and Toscanini: The Centennial Series, and the interviews conducted for these two programs.

Teaching Information Literacy At Delta State University, Michael Mounce

LIB 101: Fundamentals of Information Literacy is a one credit hour course which has been designed at Delta State University to provide DSU students with information literacy skills needed for conducting research. Information literacy skills taught in this course include skills such as performing effective searches and evaluating resources. This course is a general education requirement elective. Although it is an elective course, it is highly recommended by DSU reference librarians to students, since information literacy skills are necessary for research.

We discuss the electronic resource management (ERM) implementation process at Brigham Young University (BYU) and its generalized implications for other institutions. A chronological description of decision-making and steps in the implementation process with corresponding discoveries and benefits is outlined. We conclude that implementing an ERM takes a lot of planning, forethought and effort but implementation has been very beneficial in helping BYU manage its electronic resource collections. The literature has described various ERM systems, difficulties in handling electronic resources and the ERMI standard but relatively little has been written about the practical side of implementing an ERM. In the olden days, we Baby-Boomers would walk into our university or college libraries and pause just long enough to take in that wonderful smells of high grade cowhide leather and aging papyrus before rushing off to study. There was something about opening any leather bound edition of anything and being transported by the smell to some distant land, not unlike Charles Swann in Marcel Proust’s famous French novel, A La Recherché du Temps Perdu, Remembrance of Things Past.

Purpose – This paper examines William Stetson Merrill, the compiler of A Code for Classifiers and a Newberry Library employee (1889‐1930) in an attempt to glean lessons for modern information studies from an early librarian's career. Design/methodology/approach – Merrill's career at the Newberry Library and three editions of the code are briefly examined using historical, bibliographic, and conceptual methods. Primary and secondary sources in archives and libraries are summarized to provide insight into Merrill's attempts to develop or modify tools to solve the knowledge organization problems he faced. In the 1995 publication New Automation Technology for Acquisitions and Collection Development, Nancy Markle Stanley wrote a chapter entitled "Purchasing Electronic Resources: an Acquisitions Perspective"¹ in which she outlines the challenges of managing electronic resources. The open access movement in legal scholarship, inasmuch as it is driven within the law library community over concerns about the rising cost of legal information, fails to address - and in fact diverts resources from - the real problem facing law libraries today: the soaring costs of nonscholarly, commercially published, practitioner-oriented legal publications. The current system of legal scholarly publishing - in student-edited journals and without meaningful peer review - does not face the pressures to increase prices common in the science and health disciplines.
