An Examination Of The Convergence Of Theory In Libraries And Archives, Eric Willey

While the convergence of libraries, archives, and museums (LAMs) has received considerable attention, a literature review indicates that integration has primarily occurred around digitization projects, exhibits, and budgets, while professional identity serves as a barrier to integration of scholarly work. The present study examines to what extent scholarly theory between archives and libraries has converged by surveying citations from 2008-2016 for top-rated library journals in archival journals (and vice-versa), examining Library of Congress Subject Headings of cataloged books and dissertations in OCLC WorldCat from 2008-2016, and examining papers generated by special projects related to convergence in LAMs. Findings indicate that …

America's Music was a collaborative public program presenting the history of American popular music through a series of documentary films screenings, scholar-led discussions, musical performances, exhibits, and workshops. In an era of consistently poor funding for materials budgets, libraries must work to identify the most cost-effective solutions for providing access to information needed by patrons. Consortia play an important role in these solutions for many libraries and can help leverage their buying power to provide widespread access to various publishers’ content at more affordable costs. Reference service in all types of libraries could be improved if librarians actively adopted the mindset of the Golden Rule. The Rule is expressed in some form in many world religions and instructs us to treat others how we would like to be treated. Such an approach has applicability not only in face-to-face reference transactions, but also in virtual reference settings. The empathetic reference librarian should be alert to both verbal and non-verbal clues which can indicate how a patron would like to be treated.
