The Outreach Evaluation Resource Center (OERC) provides support for health information outreach through the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM). In 2013, the OERC released the second edition of The Planning and Evaluating Health Information Projects booklets. The Health Sciences Library at Baystate Health identified an objective to use these booklets to plan and evaluate a community engagement done in collaboration with The Literacy Project, an adult literacy organization operating in Franklin County, Massachusetts.

In 2011, the Health Sciences Library at Baystate Health began participating in the monthly meetings of the Medical Home Work Group for families with special needs children in Western MA. The Community Outreach Librarian sat at the table for a few months before offering to do social media outreach for this group. Our presentation demonstrates two health sciences libraries performing outreach in public libraries to achieve these community goals: increased awareness of high-quality online resources for health information; improved confidence in finding and evaluating good health information; and increased knowledge of the resources and benefits to be gained from partnering with a health sciences library.

Baystate Health is a teaching hospital located in Springfield, MA. Our city’s population is 52% White; 22% Black; 39% Hispanic (regardless of race). Nearly 24% of our families speak Spanish at home. Poverty rates are 27%, as compared with 10% statewide. These populations are less likely to use the internet to find health information. The Dept of Health & Human Services draws a correlation between internet-based information seeking and the status of people experiencing disease, finding inverse relationships between internet use and incidence of asthma, diabetes, heart disease and other conditions. The Baystate Health Sciences Library (Springfield, MA) collaborated with Springfield City Library to provide monthly instruction in MedlinePlus.gov. The goals were to increase confidence levels in the use of MedlinePlus.gov and to satisfy those interested in learning how to search Internet. The project successfully attracted Springfield residents with low- to moderate computer skills. Our biggest problem? We didn’t attract a lot of participants. This lightning presentation will cover our accomplishments and lessons learned.

The Ithaka Report 2006 investigated trends in the valuation of library functions by faculty. Faculty placed high values on library functions as purchaser and archive even as the valuation of information gateway declined. This poster demonstrates an effort toward expanding the archive function of a hospital library. We will describe our pilot program to digitize historical documents and photographs.
