How do public libraries remain relevant and top of mind in their communities, all while giving their patrons the resources they need? They take the library to the people, which is just what the Piedmont Regional Library System did in May, 2020. Just as COVID-19 was sweeping the country, this public library system headquartered in Jefferson, Georgia launched PuRL, the (Pop-up Rolling Library). Think bookmobile, but even better.

The J. Murrey Atkins Library at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte serves over 21,000 undergraduates and over 4,000 graduate students. Apart from the sole branch library (Arts & Architecture), all of the resources are housed in the main building. In 2016, a plan was developed for a comprehensive weeding project. Two primary factors made this necessary. One was the adaptive nature of the library’s philosophy; student needs and preferences were constantly assessed, and changes were made to the library’s services and spaces based on them. Librarians and archivists have made great strides in making collections discoverable and accessible to a wide audience by creating electronic finding aids, digitizing materials and using social media, but modern researchers want more. Their research needs, practices and expectations are rapidly changing both in academia and in many other areas. Researchers are looking for quick, painless access to primary resource materials and the ability to use new communication technology mechanisms to gain this access. Since 2002, 97% of librarian jobs posted in American Libraries have required an American Library Association (ALA) accredited master’s degree (2004). The ALA Committee on Accreditation provides a general framework for library master’s program curriculum, “through a variety of educational experiences, for the study of theory, principles, practice, and values necessary for the provision of service in libraries and information agencies and in other contexts.” (Accreditation, 2014). ALA curriculum requirements are broad, however, so courses and requirements within ALA degree granting institutions vary immensely from program to program.

A Passion Deficit: Occupational Burnout And The New Librarian: A Recommendation Report, Linda A. Christian

Burnout is about an employee’s relationship with their work (Harwell, 2013, n.p.). It involves a prolonged exposure to workplace stressors that often drain an employee’s vitality and enthusiasm, and lead to less engagement and productivity. Burnout increases turnover rates and absenteeism; causes decreased performance, workplace accidents and poor customer service; and sometimes leads to litigation. It also threatens the integrity and professionalism of an individual. Emotional labor—sometimes referred to as “emotion work” or “emotion management”—contributes heavily to the burnout factor by forcing an employee to control his or her feelings in order to fulfill the goals or expectations of an …

Increasingly, the role of librarians in higher education is shifting from primarily librarian-as-expert to include librarian-as-educator (Holt, 2002). As a result, academic librarians with a wide variety of job titles are finding themselves contributing to the instructional services of their library (Hall, 2013). Even those librarians who have instruction as a principal responsibility may have little to no training or experience in instruction when they begin teaching students in one-shot or credit-bearing instruction situations. In a recent study of employer’s expectations for library instruction training, nearly 90 percent of respondents found instruction to be important to their library (Hall, 2013). …

While cloud computing is not new, cloud-based services have matured and become more prevalent, thereby offering a range of new technology tools for libraries. Cloud computing technologies, and in particular those designed for end-users, present librarians with varying technology proficiencies the ability to access and use technologies - and related services - that might otherwise be beyond their reach. As cloud computing becomes more of a mainstay, many librarians are considering new ways to use these third-party tools in their work.

Working with departments on campus to foster and support learning is a fundamental component of the University of Tennessee (UT) Libraries’ service philosophy. Academic libraries that have a broader view of the traditional liaison model and seek to develop unique and non-departmental relationships can raise their profile on campus (Dahl 2007, 3). An example of such a relationship, one that has provided a real life collaborative learning experience for students, is the partnership between the UT Libraries and the University of Tennessee Outdoor Progr am (UTOP) to teach orienteering.

Librarians often wonder what resources students use for research and whether the library provides access to these resources. At the University of South Alabama (USA), students in the honors program must complete a senior thesis in order to graduate with honors. The library holds these theses, providing a convenient source of bibliographies for examination. Studying these theses provided an unobtrusive manner of investigation. While such theses do not represent the entire undergraduate population’s research and writing behavior, they provide a starting point for addressing the above question. The last three decades, and especially the last fifteen years, have seen an expansion in the formats in which library materials are available, as electronic resources have joined the traditional print offerings produced by library suppliers. More and more, the electronic resource is becoming the first stop “go-to” information source, a predominance which can be confirmed by the number of reference and other sources which have shifted from print to electronic format or, not making the change, have simply ceased to exist.
