Osmotic Dilution For Sustainable Greenwall Irrigation By Liquid Fertilizer: Performance And Implications, Ming Xie, Mingxin Zheng, Paul Cooper, William E. Price, Long D. Nghiem, Menachem Elimelech

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A novel osmotic dilution process using commercial liquid fertilizer for greenwall irrigation was evaluated. In this process, clean water was extracted from raw sewage by forward osmosis (FO) using a well-balanced, all-purpose commercial liquid fertilizer as draw solution. The diluted liquid fertilizer can then be used for direct sustainable greenwall irrigation. Our results show that the presence of organic matter in the liquid fertilizer draw solution did not compromise FO membrane performance. No discernible changes in water flux and key membrane transport parameters (pure water permeability coefficient, A, and salt (NaCl) permeability coefficient, B) were observed when the organic matter …

Sludge Cycling Between Aerobic, Anoxic And Anaerobic Regimes To Reduce Sludge Production During Wastewater Treatment: Performance, Mechanisms, And Implications, Galilee Semblante, Faisal Ibney Hai, Huu H. Ngo, Wenshan Guo, Sheng-Jie You, William Price, Long Nghiem

Alternate cycling of sludge in aerobic, anoxic, and anaerobic regimes is a promising strategy that can reduce the sludge yield of conventional activated sludge (CAS) by up to 50% with potentially lower capital and operating cost than physical- and/or chemical-based sludge minimisation techniques. The mechanisms responsible for reducing sludge yield include alterations to cellular metabolism and feeding behaviour (metabolic uncoupling, feasting/fasting, and endogenous decay), biological floc destruction, and predation on bacteria by higher organisms. Though discrepancies across various studies are recognisable, it is apparent that sludge retention time, oxygen-reduction potential of the anaerobic tank, temperature, sludge return ratio and loading …

Relating Rejection Of Trace Organic Contaminants To Membrane Properties In Forward Osmosis: Measurements, Modelling And Implications, Ming Xie, Long D. Nghiem, William E. Price, Menachem Elimelech

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This study elucidates the relationship between membrane properties and the rejection of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) in forward osmosis (FO). An asymmetric cellulose triacetate (CTA) and a thin-film composite (TFC) polyamide FO membrane were used for this investigation. The effective average pore radius (rp), selective barrier thickness over porosity parameter (l/ε), surface charge, support layer structural parameter (S), pure water permeability coefficient (A) and salt (NaCl) permeability coefficient (B) of the two membranes were systematically characterised. Results show that measured rejection of TrOCs as a function of permeate water flux can be well described by the pore hindrance transport model. …

Agency In Transport Service: Implications Of Traveller Mode Choice Objective And Latent Attributes Using Random Parameter Logit Model, Ahm Mehbub Anwar, A Kiet Tieu, Peter Gibson, Khin Than Win, Matthew J. Berryman

This paper explains how principal-agent theory (PAT) can be used as an analytical tool to understand the traveller-Transport for NSW relationship and minimise the agency uncertainty in the relationship by examining traveller preferences for mode choices. The paper emphasises latent variables and objective attributes together during the choice process within the agency relationship, as a method by which the utility of the principal (traveller) can be maximised and evaluated using a discrete choice experiment, i.e. random parameter logit (RPL) model. The probability of car useis significantly higher than public transport, which indicates that an agency uncertainty exists in the relationship …

Long-Distance Walking Effect On Below-Knee Amputee Compensatory Gait Patterns And Implications On Prosthetic Designs And Training, L F. Yeung, Aaron Leung, Ming Zhang, Winson Lee Jan 2012

Long-Distance Walking Effect On Below-Knee Amputee Compensatory Gait Patterns And Implications On Prosthetic Designs And Training, L F. Yeung, Aaron Leung, Ming Zhang, Winson Lee

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Trans-tibial amputees are advised to walk as much as able people to achieve healthy and independent life. However, they usually have difficulties in doing so. Previous researches only included data from a few steps when studying the gait of amputees. Walking over a long distance was rarely examined. The objective of this study was to investigate the changes in spatial-temporal, kinetic and kinematic gait parameters of trans-tibial amputees after long-distance walking. Six male unilateral trans-tibial amputees performed two sessions of 30-min walking on a level treadmill at their self-selected comfortable speed. Gait analysis was undertaken over-ground: (1) before walking, (2) …

Voltage Unbalance Management In Power Systems Based On Iec 61000-3-13:2008: Implications On The Use Of 'Kue Factor', Upuli Jayatunga, Sarath Perera, Philip Ciufo

Voltage unbalance emission allocation principles prescribed in IEC61000-3-13:2008 Technical Report utilise a factor, kuE, which allows separation of the total voltage unbalance that arises at a point of evaluation due to both the load under consideration and the supply network. As per the definition given, this factor (kuE) accounts for the unbalance emission that arises due to the load whereas (1-kuE) accounts for unbalance that arises due to the network. The technical report prescribes a range of values from which a suitable value can be chosen based on the system characteristics, however, no systematic methodologies exist to-date to determine the …
