Gis Helps Harvest The Dragon Seed, Jim Baumann
Gis Helps Harvest The Dragon Seed, Jim Baumann
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
In an effort to establish regional coordination of demining activities in southeast Europe, the European Commission (EC) prepared and proposed a Geographic Information System (GIS) project called the “Geographical Information System for Mine Action in Southeast Europe” (GISMASE). The goal of the project is to create high-definition maps that will include the identification of mined areas and their socio-economic and security implications, as well as the development of GIS training capabilities so that the project can be locally supported.

Georeferencing Historical Fars Accident Data: A Preliminary Report, Sungsoon Hwang, Jean-Claude Thill
Georeferencing Historical Fars Accident Data: A Preliminary Report, Sungsoon Hwang, Jean-Claude Thill
Sungsoon Hwang
This report documents procedures used to geo-reference data in the FARS database. The scope of the work reported here is limited to New York State and to the period from 1996 to 2001. The expected audience of this report includes a general public interested in getting geo-referenced historical FARS data (i.e., shape file, arc/info coverage, SDTS) or in learning about implementing non-custom geo-referencing procedures in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The first part (section II, III) describes the source data and reference data. The second part (section IV, V) presents how to geo-reference the source data against reference data. More specifically, …

Construction Of Digital Elevation Models For Archaeological Applications, Jon B. Hageman, David A. Bennett

The use of interpolation in archaeology is becoming common. As archaeologists incorporate geographic information systems (GIS) and computer mapping programs into their research, questions of interpolation become fundamental considerations in the representation and manipulation of topographic data. To date, however, few archaeologists have dealt with these questions. Uncritical use of interpolation algorithms can result in unrealistic representations of the landscape in a mapping program or can result in an inaccurate digital elevation model (DEM) used in a GIS. This, in turn, can lead to an ineffective predictive model of site location. By carefully selecting an interpolation algorithm that is well …

Gis Modeling Of Desert Root Crop Maturation On The Mid-Columbia Plateau, Mary Michelle Phillips
Gis Modeling Of Desert Root Crop Maturation On The Mid-Columbia Plateau, Mary Michelle Phillips
All Master's Theses
The settlement patterns of the prehistoric inhabitants of the Columbia Plateau were choreographed to match the cadence of the seasons, with movements timed to efficiently utilize available resources. Desert roots, such as lomatium and bitterroot, provided a primary source of dietary nutrition, yet the ideal conditions for exploiting these plant resources coalesced for a very limited time in any one location. It was therefore necessary to possess an intimate knowledge of the plants' lifecycles in order to effectively plan gathering activities. In order to predict the growth patterns and maturation rates of these desert root crops, a GIS model was …
Fractal Compression And Analysis On Remotely Sensed Imagery, Ke Xiao
Fractal Compression And Analysis On Remotely Sensed Imagery, Ke Xiao
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Remote sensing images contain huge amount of geographical information and reflect the complexity of geographical features and spatial structures. As the means of observing and describing geographical phenomena, the rapid development of remote sensing has provided an enormous amount of geographical information. The massive information is very useful in a variety of applications but the sheer bulk of this information has increased beyond what can be analyzed and used efficiently and effectively. This uneven increase in the technologies of gathering and analyzing information has created difficulties in its storage, transfer, and processing. Fractal geometry provides a means of describing and …
