The relationship between physical activity and educational and health outcomes is well known. As the significance of digital devices continues to increase, along with societal reliance on them, the provision of programs that draw technology and physical activity together is increasingly important. The recent Pokemon phenomenon is an example of a digitally-driven physical activity that appealed to both adults and children alike. A 300-level subject covering Sample Surveys and Experimental Design has now been taught jointly to the Universities of Wollongong and Newcastle for two years, first using video-conferencing and then the Access Grid. In both years the subject was delivered by the same two lectures. We provide an initial review of the subject. We discuss its organisation, the use of technology, changes in our teaching and administrative styles needed to cope with this mode of delivery, feedback from students and our reaction to all of these. An overview of the subject results is given.

A simulation study was conducted to determine the relative response to selection of a one-dimensional spatial analysis of field experiments (SAFE) specifically adapted for early generation trials. The primary purpose of the analysis in these trials is to obtain accurate estimates of genotypic effects of the unreplicated test lines by adjusting for local variation, using either the yields of all neighbouring plots or the yields of neighbouring plots of (replicated) check varieties. The response to selection of the SAFE analysis, relative to the use of unadjusted yields of test line plots, was consistently greater than the relative response to selection …
