Between Land And Sea: Divergent Data Stewardship Practices In Deep-Sea Biosphere Research, Rebekah Cummings, Peter Darch
Between Land And Sea: Divergent Data Stewardship Practices In Deep-Sea Biosphere Research, Rebekah Cummings, Peter Darch
Rebekah Cummings
Data in deep-sea biosphere research often live a double life. While the original data generated on IODP expeditions are highly structured, professionally curated, and widely shared, the downstream data practices of deep-sea biosphere laboratories are far more localized and ad hoc. These divergent data practices make it difficult to track the provenance of datasets from the cruise ships to the laboratory or to integrate IODP data with laboratory data. An in-depth study of the divergent data practices in deep-sea biosphere research allows us to: - Better understand the social and technical forces that shape data stewardship throughout the data lifecycle; …

Carpe Data: Data Curation Services At Four Different Institutions, Lisa Zilinski, Christina Chan Park, Robin Dasler, Natsuko Nicholls
Carpe Data: Data Curation Services At Four Different Institutions, Lisa Zilinski, Christina Chan Park, Robin Dasler, Natsuko Nicholls
Lisa Zilinski
As funding agencies require data management plans (DMP) and data sharing, institutions are developing data services in their libraries. Data services may include data curation, including metadata creation and data preservation; data discovery, such as data set registration and data linking; extended references services, such as DMP consultations and data needs assessments; and internal activities, such as environmental scans and support for institutional/data repositories. The panel will discuss the evolution, status, and future of data services development in their respective institutions including: The status of data services development in their institution The steps taken to get to their current stage …

Purdue University Research Repository (Purr), Michael Witt
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
Overview of the Purdue University Research Repository (PURR, http://purr.purdue.edu) institutional data repository service and virtual research environment, including its design and development, how it has been promoted and adopted, and how the service is managed. Concludes with six, simple suggestions for ways that repository managers can promote the citation of data in their repositories by users. Presented at the 2013 DataCite Summer Meeting at the National Academy of Sciences, Washington D.C.

How Information Science Professionals Add Value In A Scientific Research Center, Chris Eaker, Andrea Thomer, Erica Johns, Kayla Siddell
DataONE Sociocultural and Usability & Assessment Working Groups
In response to the increasing need for a data curation workforce, the Data Curation Education in Research Centers program is educating library and information science students in scientific data curation. During the summer of 2012, the authors worked alongside scientists and data managers at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, to learn data curation within the context of a research center. Each student was matched with a “Science Mentor” and a “Data Mentor” based on prior work experience and the results of a placement questionnaire completed before the internship. Though NCAR has robust data services, we found …

When Data Curation Isn’T: A Redefinition For Liberal Arts Universities, Megan Toups, Michael J. Hughes

Data curation is one way that libraries are extending traditional services to meet the changing needs of patrons. Requirements from research funders have placed increased pressure on grant recipients to create Data Management Plans and to securely store raw data. Research universities have stepped up to provide comprehensive data support services. Despite discrepancies in funding and staff, smaller institutions can similarly provide robust services by focusing on their strengths, such as interdepartmental collaboration, flexibility, and rapid turnaround time. This article details how librarians at Trinity University adapted the larger practice of curation to meet local data management needs.

A Justification For Semantic Training In Data Curation Frameworks Development, Xiaogang Ma, Benjamin D. Branch, Kristin Wegner
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
In the complex data curation activities involving proper data access, data use optimization and data rescue, opportunities exist where underlying skills in semantics may play a crucial role in data curation professionals ranging from data scientists, to informaticists, to librarians. Here, We provide a conceptualization of semantics use in the education data curation framework (EDCF) (Fig. 1) [1] under development by Purdue University and endorsed by the GLOBE program [2] for further development and application. Our work shows that a comprehensive data science training includes both spatial and non-spatial data, where both categories are promoted by standard efforts of organizations …
Exploring Best Practices For Research Data Management In Earth Science Through Collaborating With University Libraries, Ting Wang, Benjamin D. Branch
Exploring Best Practices For Research Data Management In Earth Science Through Collaborating With University Libraries, Ting Wang, Benjamin D. Branch
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
To address the growing demand for managing earth science data, the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) partners with the Library and Technology Services (LTS) of Lehigh University and Purdue University Libraries (PUL) on hosting postdoctoral fellows in data curation activity. This inter-disciplinary fellowship program funded by the SLOAN Foundation innovatively connects university libraries and earth science departments and provides earth science Ph.D.s opportunities to use their research experiences in earth science and data curation trainings received during their fellowship to explore best practices for research data management in earth science and find out answers to:

An International Gis And Data Curation Dissemination Framework Using Mobile Devices: A Purdue-Aalto University Example, Benjamin D. Branch, Antti M. Rousi
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
The Purdue University Libraries in collaboration Aalto University Library presents a framework for an international method of bridging geospatial resources from one university campus to another. It should be noted that this is a small-scale framework based on open policy, open access and the Group of Earth Observation Systems of Systems (GEOSS) values of sharing data, resources and cyber-infrastructure capacity. This framework advocates that library services could pioneer knowledge dissemination efforts in a low cost manner utilizing mobile devices that can link international users with resources and advance international collaborative inter-librarian data support services that may incite cost reduction of …
