An Investigation Into Attitudes Surrounding Facilitated Communication, Jessica N. Peregoy

This qualitative study investigated facilitators' opinions regarding facilitated communication (FC). Six individuals who have experience and/or training in the use of this method were interviewed. Issues discussed included FC's effectiveness for individuals other than those with autism, training prior to using the method, need for modifications in the method, and validity of the communication arising from the use of FC. Recurring themes were constructed from comments made during the course of the interviews. Each theme was supported by comments made by at least half of the facilitators. The sabbatical will be built around analysis and study of the speeches and great speakers of the mid-1800's in the United States, among them Lincoln, Davis, Lee, Grant, and Frederick Douglas. Theirs was an era of great speeches and volatile public opinion. I believe their words and presentations were as much responsible for the definition of America as those of Washington or Jefferson. Even the average soldier displayed language skills of surprising quality. These speeches, poems and correspondences effectively "sold" the American Civil War to the nation. They inspire my curiosity as to how and why they were so effective …

Recent research by communication scholars has investigated the dynamics of abusive spousal relationships (Chandler, 1986; Infante, Chandler, & Rudd, 1989; Infante, Chandler-Sabourin, Rudd, & Shannon, 1990; Rancer & Niemasz, 1988; Rudd, Burant, & Beatty, 1994; Sabourin, Infante, & Rudd, 1993). Infante and his colleagues have suggested that those involved in violent relationships communicate differently with their partners than those involved in nonviolent relationships. Based on this prior research, it seems important for communication scholars to further investigate the communication behaviors of individuals involved in violent relationships. The purpose of this study was to explore how therapist and client gender are associated with communication behaviors of males and females in marital therapy. The majority of research on therapist gender issues has been conducted with individual clients. Few data exist on the effects of therapist gender within marital therapy. This study examined the communication patterns of couples within a marital therapy setting and the influence of therapist gender on those patterns. Forty-six 10-minute videotape segments of marital therapy were coded for communication patterns.
