Building Strategic Consensus: A Grassroots Planning Process, Shawn P. Calhoun, Erika Johnson

Gleeson Library Faculty and Staff Research and Scholarship

Many strategic plans start from a top-down approach, with a committee or key group of stakeholders making decisions affecting the entire organization. While the process of developing and implementing a comprehensive strategic plan requires significant tactical work, it can also foster a more inclusive, staff-centered organization. The Gleeson Library | Geschke Learning Resource Center at the University of San Francisco has just completed its first library-wide strategic plan. In alignment with our values and mission, we intentionally chose a more democratic, grass-roots process designed to build consensus and foster inclusivity by engaging and empowering staff across all departments.

In this …

Help! No Time For Library Instruction, Not Even A One-Shot, Sheri A. Brown, Dianne M. Fair Ph.D.

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Throughout the semester librarians hear from faculty that there is no time for library instruction. This is especially true for science courses where lab work is required. The Biomedical Sciences program at Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) is a rigorous, hands-on laboratory-based curriculum with course work covering physics, chemistry, biology, microbiology, molecular biology, and genetics. Students are required to complete IDS4936 – Biomedical Degree Capstone which requires a “multidisciplinary approach of learning science by analyzing social, economic, ethical, scientific, and professional aspects of their chosen topic.” (FSCJ College Catalog 2019-19)

We’Re Both Your Librarian: A Course Collaboration Between An Academic Library And A Health Sciences Library, Stephanie Evers Ard

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

The University of South Alabama is in the process of merging its academic library and health sciences library, which have previously functioned as essentially separate entities. This ongoing process requires many changes, from budget and staff considerations, to revisiting the roles the librarians play in their respective academic communities. This last concern led to a collaboration between two librarians--the Assistant Director for Strategic Initiatives at the health sciences library and the Social Sciences and Student Engagement Librarian at the academic library--in response to a faculty request for an embedded librarian to support a fully-online graduate nursing class in scholarly writing. …

Getting Your Bearings: Understanding Organizational Culture, Linda Miles, Susanne Markgren

Publications and Research

What do you know about your institution’s organizational culture? How do individuals, collaborative partners, and teams get work done? How are decisions really made? How is change introduced and implemented? How do you know when to go with the flow and when and how to resist or stand your ground? Every workplace is different, but awareness of some common challenges, a set of questions to help librarians interpret what they observe around them and profiles of organizational dynamics in action will support those working to cultivate a professional practice in often complex library environments.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Libraries are sometimes the least priority of a public school, a state university, a local government unit or an enterprise. With the efforts of its administrators and help of the innovative librarians, these libraries could solicit book donations and other information products, collaterals, library equipment and furniture if they have the right contact person – the CSR managers from the generous donors. More often than not, these libraries try to squeeze in the meager funds they get from their institutions and try to work it out based from their day-to-day needs.
