Application Of Knowledge Management In Academic Libraries: A Swot Analysis, Roseline Bawack Dec 2019

Application Of Knowledge Management In Academic Libraries: A Swot Analysis, Roseline Bawack

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Academic libraries do not operate in a vacuum, they coexist with changes, challenges and competition on all levels, therefore, strategies must be developed to ensure that academic libraries can face these challenges, become more efficient in their operations and be responsible to the needs and demands of their users. To do this requires among others an examination of both the internal library environment and the external environment (Broadhead 1991). Academic libraries must know their internal strengths, take advantage of opportunities, avoid all threats and address weaknesses. SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. A SWOT analysis of an academic …

Twitter Use By Academic Libraries In New York State, Sheena Philogene

Urban Library Journal

Twitter can be a productive tool for academic libraries to use when sharing information, marketing services, and building relationships with students, yet it is difficult to know whether academic libraries are utilizing this platform by creating an independent library account. Furthermore, if academic libraries do have accounts, it is valuable to understand what academic libraries use Twitter for, and what kinds of media they share. The purpose of this study then is to investigate whether academic libraries in New York State (NYS) use Twitter, and if they do, how and why. Based on a sample of 226 academic libraries of …

Student Information Use And Decision-Making In Innovation Competitions And The Impact Of Librarian Interventions, Heather A. Howard, Dave Zwicky

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

At a large Midwestern university, librarians work closely with an annual undergraduate agricultural innovation competition to guide students through the process of conducting market research and assessing patentability. In 2018, the authors conducted an exploratory study using focus groups of students who had participated in that year’s competition in order to learn how students find and use information in a competition setting, to evaluate the impact of library support on the students’ success, and inform further assessment activities. Results showed that students used information from the library and from their own research, notably seeking out first-hand expertise, to practice evidence-based …

Adventures In Rightsizing : Enhancing Discovery And Research With Open Access Journals In The University Library, Barbara M. Pope

Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings

Academic libraries have long had print journal collections to support the university’s discovery and research needs. However, they are also continually challenged with needs for relevant content, cost control, and space issues; some academic libraries have downsized their print journal collections as a result. Many academic libraries are replacing some print journal subscriptions with online subscriptions and supplementing with open access journals. Pittsburg State University’s (PSU) Axe Library faces the challenge of providing journal access in order to support the university’s needs and stay on budget. To that end, PSU drastically weeded its print journals in 2016 and later began …

Strategic Source Evaluation: Addressing The Container Conundrum, Alyssa Russo, Amy Jankowski, Stephanie Beene, Lori Townsend

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Purpose

This paper argues that information containers provide valuable context clues that can help students make choices about how to engage with information content. The authors present a strategic approach to source evaluation rooted in format and authority threshold concepts.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors developed a source evaluation strategy with the objective of deciding whether to trust an information source. This strategy involves a set of cues to help readers mindfully engage with both the container and content of a given source.

“What’S Up, Doc?”: Selling Digital Literacy To Academics, Marianne Sato, Kathleen Smeaton, Thomas Palmer Aug 2019

“What’S Up, Doc?”: Selling Digital Literacy To Academics, Marianne Sato, Kathleen Smeaton, Thomas Palmer

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

When academics receive emails that start with “Wassup bro?” and students think digital literacy means “computer skills for old people”, how does the library bridge the gap between students and academics? Increasingly, libraries play a pivotal role in supporting learning in this critical space. However, more could be done. Libraries need to advocate for digital literacy as a legitimate capability that should be embedded into the curriculum rather than an optional extra.

In 2018, The University of Queensland Library undertook a project to create digital literacy modules to enable students to develop digital capabilities that would “fit an individual for …

The Push-Pull Of Digital Literacy, Jo Coldwell-Neilson, Kat Cain Aug 2019

The Push-Pull Of Digital Literacy, Jo Coldwell-Neilson, Kat Cain

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Digital literacy within higher education was originally grounded in Gilster’s (1997) definition that essentially framed it as information literacy using technologies. This has necessarily evolved over the past two decades in conjunction with rapid technological advances. Digital literacy concepts have attempted to match the changing landscape engendered by ubiquitous and ever more available technologies, where cybersecurity and accessibility, multimodal communication channels, and push-pull models of information delivery impact the way we learn, work and play. A dizzying plethora of digital literacy definitions has emerged, with no common understanding of what it means or what skills and capabilities it reflects. Concomitantly, …

Library As Laboratory: Using Primary Sources And Research Tools In The Hel Classroom, Kimberly Emmons, Melissa Hubbard Aug 2019

Library As Laboratory: Using Primary Sources And Research Tools In The Hel Classroom, Kimberly Emmons, Melissa Hubbard

Researchers, Instructors, & Staff Scholarship

This essay is the result of an ongoing collaboration among an English faculty member (Kimberly Emmons), a humanities research librarian (William Claspy), and a special collections director (Melissa Hubbard). We work at a private research university, with an undergraduate population of approximately five thousand students. Our campus is best known for its scientific, medical, and engineering research and innovation. Accomplish- ments in the arts and humanities are equally robust, but undergraduates in these fields nevertheless find themselves justifying their interests to a more pragmatic and professionally oriented peer group. Initially, our collaboration was a simple show-and-tell activity meant to give …

Theft And Mutilation On The Use Of Library Resources In Nigerian Academic Libraries., Idakwo Innocent

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The ability of the library to meet the needs of its teeming users is greatly dependent on the availability of information resources. Theft and mutilation are serious factors that hamper not just availability but usability of information resources. This paper discussed some of the causes of theft and mutilation to include high cost of books, lack of photocopying machine, lack of electronic security measures, and lack of proper monitoring of students, porous library security system, and unavailability of online databases among others. This study also revealed that theft and mutilation of information resources has lots of negative impact on the …

An Exploration Of Partnerships Between Disability Service Units And Academic Libraries, Susan Murphy, Dale Amerud, Chloe Corcoran

Collaborative Librarianship

The University of Saskatchewan’s University Library has been partnering with its institution’s Disability Services unit for almost twenty-five years to provide space and equipment for students with disabilities in some of its library locations. This partnership has grown from piloting a Kurzweil reader, to the development of multiple assistive technology and exam writing rooms, to the recent creation of a multi-purpose room. These library spaces complement spaces Disability Services has within its own office suite and reflect the growth in the number of students registered with them, a widening spectrum of disabilities, and a collaborative desire to make disability services …

The Ultimate Survey: Asking One Question At A Time To Get Feedback From Library Users, Leticia Camacho, Brian Wages, Taylor Harris Jul 2019

The Ultimate Survey: Asking One Question At A Time To Get Feedback From Library Users, Leticia Camacho, Brian Wages, Taylor Harris

Faculty Publications

Libraries use surveys and other instruments to gather feedback from their users. However, with competition from many other campus entities requesting input, how can survey fatigue be avoided? To gather this feedback, the Social Sciences Reference Desk utilized a short, fun and easy method. Each week for 10 weeks during the fall semester of 2017, the reference assistants wrote a survey question on a whiteboard and provided sticky notes for patrons to write their answers. The survey provided valuable information about patrons’ needs and expectations. It also fostered changes that were easily implemented to improve the delivery of library services.

A Vision For Kelvin Smith Library's Digitization Program, Stephanie Becker, Roger Zander, Jen Green

Researchers, Instructors, & Staff Scholarship

Through lessons learned over the past 20 years of digitizing materials, it is apparent that we need to (re)structure our digitization program specifically around human action for sustainability. New technology leads to improved imaging techniques, which ultimately drives best practices in the cultural heritage field. These changes pose challenges not just to KSL, but to all institutions who invest their resources to meet current standards, only to have those standards change a few years later. Time and experience has helped us understand that sustaining the digitization and stewardship of digital collections require as much, if not more, infrastructure, staffing, and …

The At-Risk Student Population You Might Be Overlooking: Working With Developmental Education Students, Lauren Colburn, Beth Fuchs

Library Presentations

Each year a considerable number of students are placed in developmental education courses which are intended to prepare them for college-level courses. In fact, a 2016 report published by the National Center for Education Statistics showed that 68% of students at public 2-year institutions and 40% of students at 4-year public institutions enrolled in at least one math, reading, or writing, developmental course between 2003-2009 (NCES, 2016). Nationally, many states have begun to focus specifically on these courses and the various ways institutions can surround these students with the academic support structures they need to succeed. However, one support structure …
