From Rookie To Researcher: Integrating Information Literacy Into Undergraduate Research, Larissa K. Garcia, Dee Anna Phares, Kimberly Shotick

Faculty Books & Book Chapters

Undergraduate research is a specific pedagogical practice with an impact on teaching and learning, and the definition of what counts as research continues to expand to include different types of projects, mentors, and institutions. Diversity, equity, and inclusion in librarians’ work with students and faculty are present and growing. Collaborations between faculty, librarians, and students are furthering student knowledge in new ways. This community and an awareness of students’ non-academic challenges demonstrate the library’s contribution to students’ overall sense of belonging within their institutions. This chapter describes the involvement of an academic library with an undergraduate research program.

Abdou Filali-Ansary Occasional Paper Series

The three papers collected here are based on a seminar on Islamic Studies Librarianship held on 31 January 2019 at the Aga Khan Library (AKL), in conjunction with the Aga Khan University Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (AKU-ISMC). Take The Bull By The Horns: Combatting Bullshit In Academic Libraries, Amanda B. Albert

University Libraries Presentations

This poster will discuss what is meant by “bullish*t” in libraries, as defined in a seminal talk given by Jane Schmidt in a 2018 keynote at the Canadian Association for Professional and Academic Librarians. The presenter will identify various types of BS perpetuated and created in libraries, highlighting such concepts as “innovation,” “leadership,” and “(ir)relevance.” The presenter seeks to answer the question "is BS ever beneficial to the library and it’s organizational culture?” Finally, the poster will discuss specific strategies for combating BS in one’s own library, including overcoming the "cult of busy". Participants will be encouraged to reflect on …

2018 Diversity and Inclusion Certification Course

DEI has become increasingly important for all libraries because while the populations we serve are more diverse our staff is not. What are initiatives that I can do to support an inclusive culture for the library, campus and profession?

From Dandelion Seed To Cottage Garden: The Transformation Of User Experience In The Msu Libraries, Christine Tobias Jan 2015

From Dandelion Seed To Cottage Garden: The Transformation Of User Experience In The Msu Libraries, Christine Tobias

Re-think it: Libraries for a New Age - Conference Proceedings

The user experience movement is gaining momentum in libraries, but its adoption and adaptation into an organizational culture may present unexpected challenges. In June 2014, the Michigan State University (MSU) Libraries created a User Experience unit and in a short time, established a solid and reputable team of practitioners. This success, however, was not achieved overnight. User experience work tends to be team-oriented and project-based, and initially, unit members struggled to adapt their roles within the unit and the unit’s role within the organization. To guide the unit forward, an in-house retreat was held to give unit members an opportunity …

Excuse Me. Is That A Video Studio In Your Library?, Lori S. Mestre, Eric Kurt

Re-think it: Libraries for a New Age - Conference Proceedings

Although many faculty now require student projects to be presented in a multimodal format, it is rarely feasible for each department or school to acquire all of the technology needed to support those efforts or to require that each student purchase the equipment. This article provides details of the Video Production Studio in the Media Commons at the Undergraduate Library, which serves as a centralized service space that houses a robust loanable technology program and collaborative studios that facilitates the creation of video and audio projects. It is an environment that helps to foster discussion and collaboration from students and …

Purdue University Press Books

This report briefly presents the findings and recommendations of the "Library Publishing Services: Strategies for Success" project which investigated the extent to which publishing has now become a core activity of North American academic libraries and suggested ways in which further capacity could be built. The research described (consisting of a survey, some case studies, three workshops, and a set of further reading recommendations) was mainly conducted between October 1, 2010, and September 30, 2011. It was supported by a grant from the Institute for Museum and Libraries Studies, made to Purdue University Libraries in collaboration with the Libraries of …

Academic Library Management Issues And Practices, Mohammed M. Aman

School of Information Studies Faculty Books

This book is partially based on the contents of the course on Academic Library Management which I have been teaching at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The contents are designed to be used in connection with additional readings to be selected from the extensive lists of references at the end of each chapter as well as from other databases available to students in university and public libraries and library systems. Examples of best practices found in some academic libraries are mentioned in order to blend theory with practice.

Profiles Of Academic Libraries, Mohammed M. Aman

School of Information Studies Faculty Books

Collectively, the profiles included in this book are designed to give a bird‘s eye view of the various aspects of academic librarianship, not only in the United States, but in other countries as well, such as Egypt, Jordan, South Africa, and Saudi Arabia. These profiles enable the reader to compare the various aspects of academic librarianship on a national as well as international level. These comparisons may also lead to identifying best practices used by college and university libraries in such areas as management, marketing, information fluency and the like. Reading the chapters, the reader can draw examples of best …
