Accessibility Of Vendor-Created Video Tutorials For People With Disabilities, Joanne Oud

Many video, screencast, webinar, or interactive tutorials are created and provided by vendors for use by libraries to instruct users in database searching. This study investigates whether these vendor-created database tutorials are accessible for people with disabilities to see whether librarians can use these tutorials instead of creating them in-house. Findings on accessibility were mixed. Positive accessibility features and common accessibility problems are described, with recommendations on how to maximize accessibility.

Unsolicited gifts exacerbate existing space issues and backlogs, staff workflows, and collection policies. As the scope and needs of libraries continually change, the positions that might have typically managed these donations, such as gift librarians or paraprofessional staff, are no longer automatically replaced as they become vacant. In the University of Mississippi Libraries, recent technological developments such as the Getting It Started Toolkit (GIST) Gift Deselection Manager (GDM) have helped to streamline workflow by generating data that can be shared with subject librarians as well as administration.

At the University of Mississippi, screencasting was used to promote a database trial to the ARTStor Digital Library. Using Jing, a free product used for recording and posting screencasts, and a Snowball USB microphone, 11 videos averaging 3 minutes in length were posted to an online topic guide. Screencasting was used as a quick, creative, and cost-effective marketing strategy to appeal to multiple stakeholders. The short videos, focused in content and message, were an effective tool to push patrons to the database trial.

How Well Do Ontario Library Web Sites Meet New Accessibility Requirements?, Joanne Oud

New changes to Ontario law will require library web sites to comply with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, version 2.0 (WCAG 2.0). This study evaluates 64 Ontario university, college, and public library web sites to see how well they comply with WCAG 2.0 guidelines at present. An average of 14.75 accessibility problems were found per web page. The most common problems included invalid html, poor color contrast, incorrect form controls and labels, missing alt text, bad link text, improper use of headings, using html to format pages, using absolute units of measure, and issues with tables and embedded objects.

Do popular reading materials belong in college and university libraries? Although some librarians think not, others believe there are compelling reasons for including them. The trend towards user-focused libraries, the importance of attracting patrons to libraries in the age of the Internet, and, most importantly, the need to promote literacy at a time when it has reached its lowest levels are all reasons why academic librarians are reconsidering their ideas about popular reading materials. Librarians who decide to implement a leisure reading collection should consider a number of key issues.

Communication between reference librarians is vital for the provision of enhanced reference services. This article discusses the creation and application of three Web-based tools that allow librarians to offer quick answers to questions posed on the library’s e-mail reference service, to easily share news and ideas with each other between reference desk shifts, and to be actively involved in the scheduling of reference desk shifts.
