Liturgy Of The Dispersed: Memory, Transnationalism, And Cambodian Cuisine In The American Diaspora, Phalika Oum
Liturgy Of The Dispersed: Memory, Transnationalism, And Cambodian Cuisine In The American Diaspora, Phalika Oum
Psychology, Criminal Justice & Sociology Student Scholarship
This study addresses Cambodian diasporic cuisine in the United States, recognizing cuisine as a way for Cambodians to maintain transnational ties in the era of mounting globalization. It is rooted in anthropologist Arjun Appadurai’s theories on imagination, culturalism, and globalization. Using purposive sampling and the grounded theory approach, this study compares 25 pre-diaspora recipes to 25 diaspora recipes, and assesses changes in ingredients, cooking methods, and cultural or historical notes, respectively. Major findings in diasporic recipes, in comparison to pre-diasporic recipes, includes more leniency in ingredients used, stricter instructions on cooking methods, and greater nostalgia for the homeland.

Engaging The Disengaged: Implementing A No-Tech Policy After Years Of Adding Tech To The Classroom, Keith Quesenberry
Engaging The Disengaged: Implementing A No-Tech Policy After Years Of Adding Tech To The Classroom, Keith Quesenberry
Business Educator Scholarship
After a decade of adding technology to the classroom, students asking for a laptop ban sent me on a journey of discovery. After a literature review of existing research and a semester of a no-tech policy, I found less tech, not more increases student engagement and learning. Despite more than a dozen studies over the last decade detailing the negative learning effects of laptops in the classroom, the majority of faculty believe that laptop use in class increases learning. I highlight the research findings, explain my experience with the new policy, and provide suggestions on how to attempt your own. …

Consumption Of Healthy And Unhealthy Foods By The African Poor: Evidence From Nigeria, Tanzania, And Uganda, Michael Dolislager, Lenis Saweda Liverpool-Tasie, Nicole Mason, Thomas Reardon, David Tschirley
Business Educator Scholarship
We use national Living Standards Measurement Study (LSMS) datasets from Nigeria, Tanzania, and Uganda to examine consumption by the rural and urban poor of “unhealthy foods” (including ultra-processed foods such as sweets and sugary beverages) versus “healthy foods” beyond starchy staples (such as vegetables, beans, animal products, and fruits). Consumption of processed foods and nonstaples is often associated in policy discussion in Africa with middle-class urban consumers rather than the poor. We analyzed household food consumption expenditure with Locally Weighted Scatterplot Smoothing (LOWESS) curves and augmented Engel regressions. We found that substantial shares of the consumption expenditure of the poor, …

Relationship Between Self-Esteem And Athletic Participation, Megan Duffey, Raina Diziki, Ben Vollmer, Latonya Porter
2022 SACS Symposium
The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between one’s participation in athletics and levels of self-esteem. Researchers wanted to examine if a person’s participation in competitive sports led to higher levels of self-esteem as opposed to those who do not participate in organized or competitive sports. Participants were found using convenience sampling exclusively on the campus of a religiously affiliated university. A survey was created electronically using the program Qualtrics. The survey measured athletic participation by asking participants how many competitive sports they were participants of. Self-esteem was measured using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. A sample of …
The Invitational Evangelist: How Saint Patrick’S Invitational Rhetoric Transformed The Celtic Church, Jennifer Myers
The Invitational Evangelist: How Saint Patrick’S Invitational Rhetoric Transformed The Celtic Church, Jennifer Myers
2022 SACS Symposium
How could a feminist communication theory possibly relate to a Christian movement that developed in Ireland over 1,500 years ago? While the ideas appear to be worlds away from each other, some investigation reveals that they are unified in ways that have not previously been explored. Through a thematic analysis of two primary source documents, this study aims to detail the use of invitational rhetoric throughout the transformative ministry of Saint Patrick, as well as the implications for how this type of communication can be useful to faith-based communicators in the present day.
Squid Game & Social Penetration Theory: An Economical Look On Ali And Sangwoo Through Language And Linguistics, Pathomkarn Boonpienpol
Squid Game & Social Penetration Theory: An Economical Look On Ali And Sangwoo Through Language And Linguistics, Pathomkarn Boonpienpol
2022 SACS Symposium
Research Question:
Through Ali's and Sangwoo's relationship dynamics, how can we discover, evaluate, and analyze the nature of intercultural, fictional portrayals in a competitive setting like the environment in Squid Game?
Discussions and Findings:
The risk of deep disclosure in terms of economic value is the breaking of trust. As relationships develop and more self-disclosure occurs, more trust gradually builds between the two characters. However, in a competitive environment of life and death, the risks that come with too much trust and loyalty are that the relationship they share will make it harder for both parties to make decisions or …

“I'M Not Really Sure, But I Think”: Entrance Stories From Chinese-Americans Adopted Between 1995-2005, Rosemary Jones
2022 SACS Symposium
Within families, shared narratives may be used to create and strengthen a family's experiences, as well as develop their identity as a group. For families that are traditionally biological, any social and cultural assumptions about their families and about biological births as a child’s entrance into their family only affirm their validity. However, for families that do not share these master narratives, they may feel edged out of the cultural and social bounds of acceptable. In place of the common birth stories and to fulfill the gaping history of a birth story, families who have adopted will share entrance stories, …
Shadow Of Culloden: The Political Legacy Of The 1745 Jacobite Rebellion, Autumn Miller
Shadow Of Culloden: The Political Legacy Of The 1745 Jacobite Rebellion, Autumn Miller
History, Politics & International Relations Student Scholarship
Legacies change over time, and the Battle of Culloden is no different, especially depending on who is seeking out election in Westminster. Often, the Jacobite failure is used to garner political gain during nationalistic movements; while others included when Westminster needed to push back against the Scottish people to keep them subdued. The catastrophic failure of the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion led to changing political legacies over the next two hundred years, which has permeated modern-day United Kingdom politics with the result of a Scottish referendum in 2014. With a close analysis of stateless nations theory, as well as Wales as …

The Search For Enduring Peace: Promoting Rebel Party Formation In Post-Civil Conflict States, Isabel Villegas
The Search For Enduring Peace: Promoting Rebel Party Formation In Post-Civil Conflict States, Isabel Villegas
Honors Projects and Presentations: Undergraduate
Civil wars have been a common occurrence throughout human history and have had an immense impact on political developments worldwide. Infamous examples include those in Rwanda, the Congo, Ukraine, and more recently, Syria, Yemen, and Afghanistan⸻all of which were, or haven been quite violent and with a range of human rights abuses committed by both state and rebel actors. Civil wars often have a variety of outcomes: a decisive win by government and military forces, a revolutionary victory and overthrow of current powers accomplished by rebels, the creation of a “failed state” lacking legitimate leadership and political institutions, or a …

Words Empty And Hollow? The Brethren In Christ Church And The Challenge Of Race, 1967-1975, David Weaver-Zercher
Biblical, Religious, & Philosophical Studies Educator Scholarship
This article, the second of two exploring the Brethren in Christ Church’s response to race, racism, and the Civil Rights Movement, picks up the story in 1967. Earlier, in 1963 and 1964, the denomination had adopted two statements on the issue of black civil rights that placed the church firmly in the “white moderate” camp. Not only did the events of the late 1960s call for renewed consideration of these issues, but the denomination itself was changing, with a growing contingent of members who considered working for social change to be an important part of the church’s mission. To be …

Bias In The Stacks: Seeking Justice On The Shelves, Liz Kielley, Sarah Myers
Library Exhibits & Events
Words matter. To make materials findable, libraries have relied on subject headings and classification numbers to organize their resources. Have you ever wondered how these subjects or classification numbers were developed? Both the Dewey Decimal Classification and Library of Congress Classification were developed with a Western-centric, white, Christian, male perspective. How does the language we use in our subject headings reinforce marginalization? In what ways can libraries reconcile the inequalities found in these standardized policies to be inclusive of diverse and multicultural perspectives? What are Messiah’s Murray Library and other institutions doing to create balance?

Nonprofit Narratives: Faith-Based Organizations, The Gospel Mission, And You, Jennifer Myers
Honors Projects and Presentations: Undergraduate
This study involved an in-depth investigation into how overtly Christian 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations incorporate the use of storytelling into their external communications through the lens of Walter Fisher’s narrative paradigm theory. Key theoretical streams examined as a part of the literature review include organizational mission communication with an emphasis in faith-based nonprofits, as well as organizational storytelling. This research study explored the following questions: “How do faith-based nonprofit organizations use narrative storytelling via social media to communicate their organizational missions within their circle of influence?” and “How do faith-based nonprofit organizations use narrative storytelling via social media to invite their …
Religious And Spiritual Implications In Functional Anger, Carol Z.A. Mcginnis
Religious And Spiritual Implications In Functional Anger, Carol Z.A. Mcginnis
Counseling Educator Scholarship
The topic of spirituality has been of interest for many years in the helping professions (Matise et al., 2018; Pargament, 2011). Another level of interest is how spirituality may be connected to anger that is culturally informed (Subarimaniam et al., 2020). This writing approaches the topic of functional anger as impacted by the religious and spiritual beliefs with case vignettes pertinent to students, pastoral counselors, nurses, social workers, psychologists, psychotherapists, and other helping professionals. The topic of spirituality has been of interest for many years in the mental health profession yet is pertinent to all …
