Litigating For Legality: Nature Conservation, Commercial Fisheries And Disputed Territoriality In Ukraine’S Danube Delta, Tanya Richardson

Anthropology Faculty Publications

Between 2014 and 2016 Ukraine’s Danube Biosphere Reserve (DBR) administrators devoted extensive time to lawsuits in which they defended the legality of commercial fisheries in reserve territory. Two cases are discussed in order to examine what impact litigation had and why administrators pursued litigation when dominant accounts of law in Ukraine suggest that avoiding the courts might be a more likely response. It analyzes court documents and interviews gathered during anthropological research about nature conservation in the Danube Delta by combining insights from political ecology, agrarian studies, and socio-legal scholarship on Ukraine. Even though administrators lost their cases and had …

Democracy Requires Good Law Libraries – With Books, Franklin L. Runge Aug 2021

Democracy Requires Good Law Libraries – With Books, Franklin L. Runge

Providing Access With Bookmobiles: A Chapter In The History Of Georgia Libraries, Rebecca J. Hunnicutt Jul 2021

Providing Access With Bookmobiles: A Chapter In The History Of Georgia Libraries, Rebecca J. Hunnicutt

Georgia Library Quarterly

Providing access to information is one mission of libraries and librarians. Programs and outreach are important aspects of accomplishing this mission. The implementation of the bookmobile program in the United States in the early 1900s provided access to those who couldn’t easily travel to a library. There are many people, then and now, who struggle to access libraries and the valuable resources libraries provide. Those people are the benefiters of the utilization of this innovative idea. Bookmobiles were valuable programs in the early 1900s and continue to be a useable and needed program today.

Our study sought to measure the impact of ACA Medicaid expansion on preventable hospitalization (PH) rates, a measure of access to primary care.

METHODS: We performed an interrupted time series analysis of quarterly hospitalization rates across eight states from 2012 to …

Intersectionality signifies the impact of multiple intersecting identities in society as a direct correlation to the specific and unique barriers of marginalized groups. Resources are currently limited due to the lack of representative data. Although many studies have been conducted, many researchers have failed to capture the need of social services in rural areas.

Access To Quality Childcare, Diane Hancock Apr 2021

Access To Quality Childcare, Diane Hancock

There are almost 1800 licensed child care programs in Maine that vary in size, location, setting, and quality. It is important that all families have equal access to …

But Why 2020? How To Apply A Ux-First Mindset While Making On-The-Fly Changes, Christopher M. Jimenez

Works of the FIU Libraries

The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted the web presence of every institution. Libraries have made both major changes and minor tweaks to web elements. In some cases, entire web pages that typically would have taken weeks of planning, research, and testing before launch were published on an expedited schedule. But beyond an immediate urgency, can we explain why these changes were made? This session will present the design thinking principles that informed a university library's effort to highlight remote library services to students. This session will also stress the importance of documenting the rationale behind changes to identify critical elements and …

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Access, equity, diversity, and inclusion are essential elements of 4-H’s goals related to positive youth development and organizational sustainability. The 4-H organization has impacted over 6 million youth worldwide and continues to grow every day. At the county, state, and national level, 4-H programs have grown more diverse, making it essential that 4-H programs encourage and highlight cultural similarities and differences through education. However, training in cultural competence for 4-H leaders is lacking, which is the bridge to connecting diversity and inclusion. Cultural competency is an awareness of one’s own cultural identity and the ability to interact effectively and appropriately …

Characteristically possessing well-developed basic interpersonal communicative skills, they lack the cognitive academic learning proficiencies essential for tertiary success. This article reports on doctoral research into six Generation 1.5 undergraduates navigating one academic year in one Western Australian university. Key findings include their …

Placemaking And Community-Building Among Lesbian, Bisexual, And Queer (Lbq) Women And Non-Binary People During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Gabby Unipan Jan 2021

Placemaking And Community-Building Among Lesbian, Bisexual, And Queer (Lbq) Women And Non-Binary People During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Gabby Unipan

Honors Projects

This paper draws on data collected through in-depth interviews with multi-generational participants recruited from various online sites to explore the place-making strategies among lesbian, bisexual, and queer (LBQ) women and trans- and gender-non-conforming people (tgncp) during the Covid-19 pandemic. Historically denied public space, placemaking in immaterial space (i.e., digital spaces) has been essential to the production and maintenance of communities for LBQ women and tgncp. Because these populations rely on non-traditional placemaking strategies that are not always instantiated in material space, sociologists often overlook their efforts to create place for themselves. This paper corrects this omission by exploring how communities …
