Exploring Storytelling With Survivors Of The Sierra Leone Civil War, Manu A. Carpenter
Exploring Storytelling With Survivors Of The Sierra Leone Civil War, Manu A. Carpenter
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Bessal van der Kolk (2007) describes the effects of childhood trauma and concludes that the body remembers trauma. Meaning that the results from one's negative experience holds that energy until it is released. Those who have experienced traumatic events due to war may have never had an opportunity to heal from it. In researching different approaches to mental health interventions, this thesis shows the power of storytelling through the method of interviewing. The participants in this investigation are survivors of the civil war in Sierra Leone, West Africa. Six Part story method by Lahad (2006) is used to analyze the …

Integrating Expressive Arts Therapy And Spirituality: A Literature Review Of Trauma Treatment, Kylie O'Neill
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This literature review responds to the question, “Does a combination of spirituality and expressive arts therapy (EAT) work for the treatment of trauma in adolescent girls?” According to the literature, EAT already has significant information that it is helpful for healing trauma, including measurable research studies on trauma symptom improvement in adolescent girls using EAT, client self-reports of improvement in trauma symptoms using EAT, arts-based research including progress measured by client art, and writing by experts in the field of EAT. While spirituality is and has been in many people’s lives and is accepted in countries outside of the United …
Examining The Creative Therapies As A Strategy For Addressing The Trauma Of Intimate Partner Violence: A Literature Review, Gina Cestaro
Examining The Creative Therapies As A Strategy For Addressing The Trauma Of Intimate Partner Violence: A Literature Review, Gina Cestaro
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Thirty percent of all women worldwide will experience intimate partner violence (IPV) in their lifetime (WHO, 2019). IPV is damaging to the body and mind, and impacts every area of a woman’s life, and frequently results in trauma (Murray, et al., 2017). The seriousness and prevalence of intimate partner violence clearly warrants research into effective treatments. Consequently, this literature review examines existing arts-based interventions that address the symptomology of trauma and how those interventions could specifically benefit victim-survivors of IPV. Research in neuroscience has shown that memories of a traumatic experience are often stored as disconnected fragments and overwhelming bodily …
Critically And Creatively Engaging With Trauma-Informed Mental Health Research And Treatment Of Lgbtqia+ Communities As Expressive Arts Therapists: A Literature Review, Kelli Lavallee
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Expressive Arts Therapists are uniquely situated as both artists and mental health counselors working in psychological pedagogy rooted in systems of oppression. Given the arts-based approaches to the therapeutic relationship, it can be unethical to offer these approaches without acknowledgement of the ways in which the arts intersect with social justice, and justice is only viable if practitioners critically review the clinical mental health education they are consuming from the institutions they learn in, specifically trauma-informed mental health research assimilation and treatment approaches for Expressive Arts Therapists in training, practice, and education. A review of the literature in this paper …
Understanding The Verbalization Of Child Trauma Through Dance/Movement Therapy: A Literature Review, Nicole C. Camuso
Understanding The Verbalization Of Child Trauma Through Dance/Movement Therapy: A Literature Review, Nicole C. Camuso
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Born without verbal language, humans rely on movement to understand basic needs (Beltran, Brown-Elhillali, Held, Ryce, Ofonedu, Hoover, Ensor, & Belcher, 2016). In the 1950s, Dance/Movement Therapists started to connect the mind and body as one entity (Chaiklin & Wengrower, 2009). This integration supported the idea that by working together, the mind and body can help the individuals understand their sense of self as a whole, including the physiological, emotional, sociocultural, and cognitive parts (Chaiklin & Wengrower, 2009). This literature review explores literature about traumatized children and the use of Dance/Movement Therapy. By allowing access to DMT and combining both …
What We Bring To The Space: Considerations For Emerging Therapists On Nonverbally Communicating Safety, Isabella Mazza
What We Bring To The Space: Considerations For Emerging Therapists On Nonverbally Communicating Safety, Isabella Mazza
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This thesis, in the form of a literature review, seeks to find how emerging therapists can nonverbally communicate safety within a group therapy session. In considering the target population, this thesis looks to focus specifically on children who have experienced trauma and may not have much experience recognizing the signals contextualizing safety. While therapists cannot guarantee ongoing safety, how are feelings of safety and trust in service of a therapeutic relationship developed? This research includes a review of literature in the areas of dance/movement therapy theories, trauma theories, polyvagal theories, and communication research. In this thesis, the term nonverbal communication …
Mapping The Dissociated Body, Elizabeth Hough
Mapping The Dissociated Body, Elizabeth Hough
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This capstone thesis explored the use of body mapping and body scans as a tool for assessing and tracking somatic dissociation and embodiment. The researcher utilized a clientcentered approach and mindfulness-based interventions and theory to ground the work with the clients. While there were a variety of questionnaire-based tools for assessing dissociation with clients, many of them were lacking in the somatic component of dissociation. The available assessments were also exclusively self-reported and written or verbal, which had the potential to result in biased reporting. Clients may have also struggled to identify their level of somatic dissociation due to an …
Expressive Arts Therapy In Performance As Trauma Work For Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities: A Community Engagement Project, Lucy Farmer
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
People diagnosed with an intellectual disability (ID) are at a substantially higher risk of experiencing trauma than typically abled individuals. In addition, the nature of ID makes it especially difficult to cope and access treatment. The goal of this research was to examine how expressive arts therapy can support treating this population for trauma. Information was gathered on Trauma-Informed Care, Psychodrama, Drama Therapy, Interactive Behavioral Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, and The Storytelling Method. This investigation led to a community engagement project between August 2019-February 2020 that involved the researcher meeting one-on-one with nine individuals diagnosed with ID. A …
Unlocking Recovery: A Role-Informed Drama Therapy Method For Adults With Addictions, Grace Rossman
Unlocking Recovery: A Role-Informed Drama Therapy Method For Adults With Addictions, Grace Rossman
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This Capstone Thesis Project discusses the creation and implementation of a drama therapy method with adults receiving treatment for substance use disorders at an intensive outpatient level of care. Disidentifying from the role of Addict proves a difficult task when this identity is reinforced by widespread social stigma, permanent changes to the brain’s reward system, and a system of criminalization resulting in financial and political disenfranchisement. A drama therapy framework, Robert Landy’s Role Theory, and a trauma treatment framework, Janina Fisher’s Trauma-Informed Stabilization Treatment, were used as grounding theories from which to create a method intended to help clients with …

Development Of A Method For Utilizing Oriental Belly Dance Rhythms To Deepen A Client’S Understanding Of Their Emotions After Experiencing Trauma, And Move Towards Healing, Jenny Nehir Eish-Baltaoglu
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
A workshop was offered to local women in North Eastern Ohio who have experienced trauma and are facing uncomfortable emotions or unpleasant memories as a result. A guided body scan, Focusing Oriented Art directives, and improvisational movement explorations were employed to deepen awareness and understanding of the emotions and memories participants wished to have better control over. Three movement rhythms, which are central to the ancient feminine dance form popularly known as belly dance, were explored through improvisational movement both as a group and independently. These movement rhythms included staccato pops and locks, fluid figure eights, and vibratory shimmies. Participants …

Literature Review On The Effectiveness Of Expressive Therapies With Spirituality To Hong Kong Traumatized Protesters, Constance Chung
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Expressive therapies and spirituality treatments have often been applied to people with trauma experiences. Previous research has found positive outcomes in these clinical practices. However, little research has been done to evaluate their effectiveness in helping traumatized participants in social movements. In 2019, there was a series of large-scale protests in Hong Kong resulting in many local political activists and protesters experiencing police violence and developing symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder. This critical literature review aims to explore, evaluate, and discuss the effectiveness of using expressive therapies with spirituality intervention to enhance the wellbeing of Hong Kong traumatized protesters. It …
Rhythm And Safety Of Social Engagement: Polyvagal Theory Informed Dance/Movement Therapy, Suzanne Weare
Rhythm And Safety Of Social Engagement: Polyvagal Theory Informed Dance/Movement Therapy, Suzanne Weare
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
The polyvagal theory has exerted great influence on the field of clinical therapy since the 1990s by proposing an understanding of the psychological expression seen in clients as a reflection of their physiological state of safety or threat of danger. When affect and psychological states are viewed through the lens of the autonomic nervous system directed by neuroception through bidirectional vagal nerve information, therapeutic presence and somatic therapy practices, such as those utilized in the field of dance/movement therapy, become more conceivable as best practices to treat a variety of psychological conditions to include trauma recovery, autism spectrum disorders, and …

Exploring The Music Making And Recording Process Working With Blind Children In An Elementary School Context, A Method, Graham Peck
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
There has been little to no research on ways in which professional recording spaces and techniques can be utilized for therapeutic benefit in a group music therapy setting. This paper outlines an arts-based recording method with a framework to promote resiliency, socialization within a group of peers, and effective self-expression for blind children who have experienced trauma within an elementary school context. There is also a discussion regarding the application of the recording process for beneficial group use more generally. The method framework was designed to be easily replicable for further research.
Creating A Space To Externalize: Mindfulness Based Art Therapy For Childhood Trauma, A Literature Review, Emily Jaworski
Creating A Space To Externalize: Mindfulness Based Art Therapy For Childhood Trauma, A Literature Review, Emily Jaworski
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Experiencing trauma in childhood can result in complex symptoms that impact the development as well as the mental, emotional, and physiological health of the child, resonating throughout their lifespan. Various forms of treatments are used to address the behavioral and emotional symptoms in children who experienced trauma such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Exposure Therapy, and Pharmacotherapy, however the vast majority of them do not incorporate a holistic framework when supporting children to process their traumatic experiences, therefore they do not attend to trauma as a catalyst for changes in the mind and body. This literature review aims to examine the …
Expressive Arts Workshop: The Relationship Between Educators & Trauma-Informed Care, Courtney Muttart
Expressive Arts Workshop: The Relationship Between Educators & Trauma-Informed Care, Courtney Muttart
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
From an early age, children are put into the educational system and this environment becomes one of the most consistent surroundings throughout the beginning and later chapters of their lifespan. Within some classrooms, some children present an abundance of cognitive and emotional behaviors such as inattentiveness, impulse control, and limited coping skills that, in some cases, are representations of trauma responses. Research explores the topic of trauma-informed schools and other frameworks that bring the role of the educator to attention when addressing the needs of children who have experienced trauma. I found that facilitating an Expressive Arts & Trauma workshop …
