Moving Through Depression: Development Of A Dance/Movement Therapy Method In Psychiatric Inpatient Care, Melissa Olmedo

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Short-term psychiatric hospitalization is a challenging health care model due to its short duration of care, treating the highest risk psychiatric population. Priority care within a short-term psychiatric hospitalization involves monitoring a patient’s safety for stabilization by decreasing acute mental health symptoms. Holistic psychotherapy treatment options are needed to meet the severity of patients’ symptoms for effective stabilization within a short-term model of care. This paper investigates the first implementation of a dance/movement therapy (DMT) method within two short-term units in a notable Boston hospital. The DMT group called Mindful Movement was facilitated weekly as single sessions to adults ranging …

The Use Of Mindfulness And Art-Based Interventions For Competitive Athletes In Treatment Of Sports-Related Injury, A Literature Review, Jaclyn Hammond

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This thesis investigates the experience of sports-related injury in elite competitive athletes, and the roles and impact of traditional psychological coping and prevention strategies, compared to the approaches of mindfulness and various art-based interventions in the treatment of sports-related injury for competitive athletes. Literature revealed that current treatments for injured athletes in elite sport and competition more often incorporate aspects of goal-setting, guided imagery, and relaxation rather than mindfulness or art-based interventions. However, research is lacking significantly with regards to the use of mindfulness and art-based intervention as a combined methodology in helping athletes cope with a sports injury and …

Mapping The Dissociated Body, Elizabeth Hough May 2020

Mapping The Dissociated Body, Elizabeth Hough

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This capstone thesis explored the use of body mapping and body scans as a tool for assessing and tracking somatic dissociation and embodiment. The researcher utilized a clientcentered approach and mindfulness-based interventions and theory to ground the work with the clients. While there were a variety of questionnaire-based tools for assessing dissociation with clients, many of them were lacking in the somatic component of dissociation. The available assessments were also exclusively self-reported and written or verbal, which had the potential to result in biased reporting. Clients may have also struggled to identify their level of somatic dissociation due to an …

Development Of Dialectical Behavior Therapy Informed Art Therapy Method For Adults With Psychiatric Diagnoses In A Partial Hospitalization Program, Lauren Muller

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Mindfulness based approaches as well as alternative forms of treatment have widely been introduced into the partial hospitalization setting. While the inclusion of art therapy allows individuals to engaged with a tactile experience, DBT and mindfulness informs the individual of concrete skills and coping strategies to be directly applied in the creative space. There has been ample research conducted on the use of DBT in a partial hospital setting, however there is a lack of research on the inclusion of DBT informed art therapy in the same setting. However, small scale phenomenological research has been conducted on the effectiveness of …

Lessening Psychosomatic Symptoms Using Art Therapy, Mindfulness, And Yoga: Development Of A Method, Breanna Washburn May 2020

Lessening Psychosomatic Symptoms Using Art Therapy, Mindfulness, And Yoga: Development Of A Method, Breanna Washburn

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Psychosomatic symptoms are often misunderstood and ignored by many individuals that see those that experience them as either hypochondriacs, or not a priority due to often being unexplained by modern medicine. Mindfulness-based practices have been one of the most common proven treatment methods in various studies to support the reduction and intensity of symptoms coming from emotional distress. Both art therapy and yoga were shown in some studies to do the same, but at a lower rate. I was drawn to exploring how to lessen psychosomatic symptoms by combining these three aspects of treatment to create a mindfulness-based art therapy …

Finding A Higher Power: Developing A Method To Weave Spirituality In Dance/Movement Therapy Interventions For Addiction Recovery, Tawna Halbert

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This thesis explores the foundation of research in the fields of spirituality, Dance/Movement Therapy, and addiction recovery, and paves the path for developing a method that integrates all three concepts together. The integration of spirituality in addiction recovery is widely accepted in the mental health field. Dance/Movement Therapy allows participants to connect to their internal experience, to each other, and to the shifting nature of the human experience: its application in addiction recovery is gaining momentum. In my method, connecting individuals in addiction recovery to their spirituality was the goal, and Dance/Movement Therapy was the means. Guided by the goals …

Literature Review On The Effectiveness Of Expressive Therapies With Spirituality To Hong Kong Traumatized Protesters, Constance Chung

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Expressive therapies and spirituality treatments have often been applied to people with trauma experiences. Previous research has found positive outcomes in these clinical practices. However, little research has been done to evaluate their effectiveness in helping traumatized participants in social movements. In 2019, there was a series of large-scale protests in Hong Kong resulting in many local political activists and protesters experiencing police violence and developing symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder. This critical literature review aims to explore, evaluate, and discuss the effectiveness of using expressive therapies with spirituality intervention to enhance the wellbeing of Hong Kong traumatized protesters. It …

Dance/Movement-Dialectical Behavior Therapy: Combining Modalities In The Treatment Of Substance Use: A Literature Review, Elizabeth Shillington

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

With the number of drug overdoses ever increasing, it has become more apparent that other forms of therapy need to explored in the treatment of substance use. By taking the unique needs of substance use recovery into consideration, the country will be better able to help those seeking treatment. The combined use of dance/movement therapy and dialectical behavior therapy were considered in this literature review, as both have been effective in substance use recovery but have not been used together. Through a discussion of the effectiveness of dialectical behavior therapy and an analysis of dance/movement therapy literature, it has been …

Reducing Stress In Creative Spaces: Art Therapy With Adults Living With Physical Disabilities, A Literature Review, Kelly Brennan

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Historically and currently, adults living with physical disabilities encounter life dilemmas, triggering high levels of stress. Despite the seriousness of these situations, the support and recognition of the struggle such obstacles cause tend to go ignored by society. Since persons living without disabilities do not personally feel or even perceive the gravity of the stress, accessibility demands remain overlooked. Monumental changes in political and societal constitutions take time, however, current methods that are often used with individuals coping with stress are cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based therapy. These treatments reduce stress among varied populations, specifically when treating individuals living …

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Experiencing trauma in childhood can result in complex symptoms that impact the development as well as the mental, emotional, and physiological health of the child, resonating throughout their lifespan. Various forms of treatments are used to address the behavioral and emotional symptoms in children who experienced trauma such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Exposure Therapy, and Pharmacotherapy, however the vast majority of them do not incorporate a holistic framework when supporting children to process their traumatic experiences, therefore they do not attend to trauma as a catalyst for changes in the mind and body. This literature review aims to examine the …
