What We Bring To The Space:
Considerations For Emerging Therapists On Nonverbally Communicating Safety, Isabella Mazza

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This thesis, in the form of a literature review, seeks to find how emerging therapists can nonverbally communicate safety within a group therapy session. In considering the target population, this thesis looks to focus specifically on children who have experienced trauma and may not have much experience recognizing the signals contextualizing safety. While therapists cannot guarantee ongoing safety, how are feelings of safety and trust in service of a therapeutic relationship developed? This research includes a review of literature in the areas of dance/movement therapy theories, trauma theories, polyvagal theories, and communication research. In this thesis, the term nonverbal communication …

Good-Enough Therapeutic Space Design: A Literature Review And Considerations For Expressive Arts Therapy, Rebecca Kreshak

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This thesis investigates the role of therapeutic space in expressive arts therapy through an interdisciplinary and international literature review. Definitions of therapeutic space and therapeutic space design are explored. This paper is theoretically grounded in the notion of good-enough therapeutic space, which is adapted from Winnicott’s (as cited in Davis & Wallbridge, 2004/1981) concept of a good-enough holding environment and Moskowitz-Corrois’s (2018) understanding of therapeutic space. Personal internship experiences of not-good-enough therapeutic space and a personal arts-based inquiry conceptualizing good-enough therapeutic space are discussed. Research from non-therapeutic and therapeutic settings, for both general and specific populations, are surveyed. The literature …

The use of dolls in therapy has been utilized in various ways, aligning with themes of narrative, drama, play, and expression. Through a review of existing literature and case study, the use of dolls as a therapeutic intervention will be explored through examining their use in multiple populations and age groups. By highlighting their wide …

Co-Leadership In Dance/Movement Therapy: An Art-Based Literature Review, Siyao Li May 2020

Co-Leadership In Dance/Movement Therapy: An Art-Based Literature Review, Siyao Li

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

The co-leadership model is an unseen thread in the current picture of the field of dance movement therapy (DMT). Even if it’s deeply rooted in the development of the field, its significance for the current context of culture-informed and evidence-based practice is still under-investigated. This thesis sheds light on the importance of co-leadership in DMT through a historical review of the development of the field, the rationale of using co-leadership in DMT from neuroscientific, psychological and practical perspectives, and a synthesis of empirical studies on effectiveness of co-leadership in DMT. Co-leadership is a tradition in the field of DMT which …
