This literature review looks at whether Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) might be useful when treating identity disturbances within Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). It begins by analyzing the role of identity within one’s life. Identifying how self-concept strongly impacts how one perceives and behaves within their surroundings. Identity disturbance is a characteristic of BPD that has been found to be pervasive. The lack of self-concept is also tied to the other symptoms of BPD, such as impulsivity, dysregulation, and difficulties with interpersonal relationships. The use of music, lyric analysis, and songwriting can provide a space for adolescents to express themselves and process their struggles they have encountered in their lives. Experiencing trauma in childhood can result in complex symptoms that impact the development as well as the mental, emotional, and physiological health of the child, resonating throughout their lifespan. Devastatingly, children’s exposure to trauma and stressful life events is pervasive and spans a range of human experiences. Advances in neuroscience demonstrate that such traumas experienced during childhood can deleteriously rewire a child’s nervous system, in-turn altering their brain’s organization, development, and function. Left unresolved, the impacts of trauma can compound across a child’s lifetime manifesting in a host of negative psychological and health outcomes.
