Following the trend of repurposing library space to meet modern user needs, Western University is undergoing a planned revitalization and renovation of its largest library on campus. As a result, 500,000 items will need to be shifted to other locations or off-site storage. In this session we will outline the impact of metadata work in shifting this large collection of material to a shared print preservation storage facility, in coordination with Western University’s Keep@Downsview partnership (https://downsviewkeep.org/). The paucity of the extant written record left by the Third Franklin Expedition (1845−1848) has presented challenges to the efforts of generations of searchers and scholars. Additionally, it has underscored the reliance of Western culture on written records when establishing narratives and understanding events. This paper explores the sparse written records of the expedition in the context of their contextualisation over the years within an ersatz Franklin archive which includes a variety of discourses and documentary intents. Since 2015, the UK Libraries Special Collections Research Center (UK SCRC) has offered “archives basics” workshops for community-based organizations in central Kentucky. These workshops, titled “History Allies: Helping Protect Your Past,” are free and open to the public and often hosted in partnership with area public libraries. Attendees have been from African American churches, LGBTQIA organizations, genealogical groups, museums, and more. Topics include the historical value of organizational records, selecting records for permanent retention, inventorying and storing physical and digital records, providing access to researchers, managing volunteers and volunteer projects, digitization methods and standards, and outreach and exhibits. Spaceport: A Finding Aid Launchpad, Rebecca B. French

JMU Libraries distributes its Special Collections finding aids to a number of discovery platforms, a process which historically has involved a significant amount of hand-encoding and manual data entry. We recently developed and implemented Spaceport, a Python app that has revolutionized this workflow. This presentation provides an overview of the app's functionality, which includes generating EADs for Virginia Heritage, HTML files for upload to the Libraries website, and MARCXML records for our catalog and OCLC. It also describes the efficiencies and other benefits we have observed from Spaceport's use.

Digital librarians work to balance the sometimes competing goals of stewardship and access all while being responsive to the needs of patrons, content owners, and creators. This presentation explores the often unforeseen challenges and issues that can arise with the creation and management of digital collections. While ingesting digitized works into a repository brings up ever-present concerns such as copyright, others challenges exist within the realm of privacy (stalking, harassment, digital anonymity), plagiarism, and ownership (false claims of ownership) that are almost always unexpected.

The M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives has digitized the most complete existing collection of execution records and is making them available for digital scholarship. M. Watt Espy spent his life documenting the death penalty in the United States. He created over 24,000 index cards and over 100,000 pages of reference material to document each case. The project connects this source material to a problematic 1980s-era execution dataset. We implemented Samvera’s open source digital repository software, Hyrax, which provides online access to all of the digitized materials. From online embeds to interactive displays, timelines can serve many purposes and tell powerful stories. In this panel librarians discuss collaboration and how to bring history to life through displays, events and online platforms for engaging students and preserving community milestones. Four of our favorite tools for creating digital timelines and gathering content will be shared including Prezi, TikiToki, TimeToast, and Piktochart. Comparisons will be given based on cost, technical limitations, and general ease of use. Specific examples will also be shared and discussed.

The present study will investigate the perceptions of information professionals about their role in the work of digital humanities scholars, as well as the perceptions of digital humanities scholars on the role of information professionals in their research. While other scholarly literature has considered collaborations between these groups via surveys or interviews with small project teams, the present study will provide a large-scale analysis of collaborations using survey responses from more than 500 scholars, librarians, and archivists. When I teach students about research, I tell them that they must go to the primary source. They cannot simply rely on someone else’s interpretation of it. If they do not understand the primary source, then they need to look for context. It is irresponsible for scholars and researchers to only rely on one source and to lift quotes and citations from that single source. Moreover, I tell students they must always, always, always, provide citations to support their assertions. Boles’s lack of citations and sources in his section discussing archival privilege is extremely troubling. He avoids nuance in order …

The Ruth Lilly Law Library holds one of the most complete sets of the official Indiana Code in print, and we often receive research requests for sections of the historical Code from attorneys and other researchers. The print collection is far more complete than anything available online and is freely available for anyone to use, but this generally requires a trip to the library. Currently, there is no free online public access to the Indiana Code predating 2009, and paid access offers no codes between 1921 and 1990. We have set out to change this.

Light analyzes "responsible custody," one of eleven core values of archivists as described by the Society of American Archivists. After reviewing professional literature about postcustodial debates in the electronic records environment, advocacy for cultural sensitivity in native or colonial archives, and new models for stewardship associated with the community archives movement, Light proposes to revise this core value as "responsible stewardship."

Vials of healing water from Marian shrines, flowers collected at holy sites, and images of statues that miraculously cry—these objects are just a few of the striking, unusual, and often underused artifacts and archival materials documenting religious experiences found in the University of Dayton’s archives and special collections.

These engaging items, while often controversial in nature, can serve as powerful teaching tools to engage undergraduates. When an opportunity arose to partner with a religious studies faculty member, the University of Dayton’s archivists and librarians used these artifacts to develop an instruction session that offered students an opportunity for active, hands-on …
