Rising concerns over water availability and population growth in the state of Washington led to the passage of the 1998 Watershed Management Act. The Act provides a framework for the collaborative development of watershed management plans (WMPs) by the 62 watersheds, known as Water Resource Inventory Areas (WRIAs). The State Legislature revived this collaborative framework in Engrossed Substitute Senate Bill (ESSB) 6091, passed on January 19, 2018. ESSB 6091 mandated the watershed planning entities for the Nooksack River watershed, located largely in Whatcom County, Washington known as WRIA 1, to amend an existing watershed plan by February 1, 2019. Prior research has investigated the effectiveness of social normative and environmental impact messages to encourage pro-environmental behaviors. One goal of this thesis was to investigate how these messaging strategies can be used to influence the sustainable behavior of making a plant-based food choice. Recent studies have also suggested that both social and self-identity resulting from various cultures, backgrounds, social roles and individual experiences have a strong influence on food choice. Study 1 presented in this thesis produced quantitative results from a field experiment on a university campus that investigated the influence of three different messaging techniques on plant-based food choice. …

The purpose of this work is to explore the current children’s literature that represents and presents lived experiences of underrepresented peoples within North America. Narratives in children's literature are historically homogenous in themes rooted in dominant colonial culture. This can be problematic with regards to supporting the diversity, equity, and inclusion of all people, in and out of educational settings.

Using myself as a site of study, I examined the sensations and current state of my mixed racial identity. In addition, I have collected and reviewed currently available children’s literature as a point of inspiration to write my own story. …

Tribal governments in Washington State are important regional governments that exist in and border many counties. Tribal interests often extend beyond the boundaries of the reservation and into the county space where they may be affected by county and local government planning. Properly integrating tribal interest into regional comprehensive planning is necessary to reduce conflict and provide Indian tribes a seat at the government table.

As disaster risk increases across the globe a growing attention has been placed on how disasters and emergencies impact children and youth’s access to education. International humanitarian agencies, national governments, non-governmental organization, researchers, practitioners, and advocates have coalesced to identify strategies to address school safety in the presence of disaster risk. The Comprehensive School Safety (CSS) framework developed out of this movement. This qualitative research focused on how women living in a neighborhood identified as a “food desert” experience food insecurity, and to learn what coping strategies are used in response. The closure of the full-size Albertsons grocery store centrally located in the Birchwood neighborhood on Northwest Avenue led to the identification of the area as a food desert by the USDA in 2016. Food deserts, neighborhoods with limited options for buying fresh food, are created through socio-economic and spatial inequalities that impact food access.
