Essays On Energy Economics And Environmental Policies, Janak R. Joshi Dec 2018

Essays On Energy Economics And Environmental Policies, Janak R. Joshi

Economics ETDs

This dissertation contains three distinct empirical chapters in applied energy and environmental economics. Each chapter focuses on a unique set of research questions, methods, and data. The unifying motivation therein concerns the development of renewable or alternative low-carbon energy sources as a policy response to the challenges of climate change mitigation, local and regional environmental quality issues, and energy security concerns. Economic and environmental evaluation of the energy policies coupled with understanding energy use patterns is of paramount importance. Together, the empirical chapters focus on demand, supply, and policy aspects of energy markets in the United States (US).

Representing Outside The Box: Identity-Based Constituencies And Surrogate Representation In U.S. State Legislatures, Julia Hellwege Dec 2018

Representing Outside The Box: Identity-Based Constituencies And Surrogate Representation In U.S. State Legislatures, Julia Hellwege

Political Science ETDs

This project asks: whom do representatives seek to represent and how do they do it? Specifically, I seek to understand how marginalized state legislators define the concept of “constituency” and the implications for their legislative behavior. I argue that marginalization affects legislators through two avenues: socially through their identity, and institutionally through the proportion their identity group holds in the state legislature. I argue that when legislators are marginalized their awareness of identity and identity-based issue needs are prioritized and they will come to define group members as a salient identity constituency. Furthermore, they will seek to represent this salient …

Neural And Behavioral Associations Of Drinking And Empathic Processing, Charles Samuel Henry Robinson Dec 2018

Neural And Behavioral Associations Of Drinking And Empathic Processing, Charles Samuel Henry Robinson

Psychology ETDs

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a major health problem, yet most individuals with AUD do not perceive a need for formal treatment and do not receive treatment. The lack of treatment seeking among individuals with AUD may suggest a lack of self-awareness and insight into the seriousness of AUD related problems. Moreover, individuals who have lost or are at risk of losing major relationships are especially likely to perceive the need for help. Thus, it may be the case that awareness of the influence of one’s drinking on social relationships and the feelings of others (i.e., empathy) could improve treatment …

Alterations In Resting State Functional Connectivity Associated With Alcohol Use Severity And Impulsivity In A Community Sample, Elena R. Stein Dec 2018

Alterations In Resting State Functional Connectivity Associated With Alcohol Use Severity And Impulsivity In A Community Sample, Elena R. Stein

Psychology ETDs

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is characterized by neurocognitive and behavioral impairments including the multidimensional construct of impulsivity. Increased impulsivity is both a risk factor for, and a consequence of problematic alcohol use. Individuals with AUD exhibit alterations in neural circuitry when compared to those who do not have AUD. These circuit-level changes in AUD may underlie the difficulties that these individuals experience with heightened impulsivity. The present study uses data-driven resting state functional connectivity (rsFC) methodology to examine the differences in intrinsic functional networks between individuals with AUD and those who are social drinkers (SD). Participants in this secondary data …

Essays On The Factors That Contribute To Body Mass Index, Veronica Salinas Dec 2018

Essays On The Factors That Contribute To Body Mass Index, Veronica Salinas

Economics ETDs

Using diet, exercise, consumer behavior, and demographic data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), I examine the factors that contribute to body mass index (BMI) for the adult working age population. In Chapters 2 and 3, I examine how female BMI varies by race and ethnicity. In Chapter 4, I study the effect of food deserts on BMI and obesity for both males and females.

In Chapter 2, I use Bayesian Model Averaging (BMA) to examine the factors that influence female BMI for the adult working age population. Results indicate 12 of the 40 covariates are strongly …

The Impact Of Ideology On Lexical Borrowing In Arabic: A Synergy Of Corpus Linguistics And Cda, Sami Hamdi Dec 2018

The Impact Of Ideology On Lexical Borrowing In Arabic: A Synergy Of Corpus Linguistics And Cda, Sami Hamdi

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

Lexical borrowing is a natural outcome of language contact and one source of neologisms. The traditional view of lexical borrowing explains it as motivated mainly by lexical need or prestige where loans in the recipient language have more or less similar if not identical meanings with the borrowing language. Linguistic adaptation has been often seen grammatically based where grammarians or linguists assume the major task of nativizing foreign terms. This is typical in many studies on linguistic borrowing in Arabic while a secondary attention is given to semantic, sociolinguistic, and educational perspectives. The present study approached lexical borrowing as more …

Learning Statistics Through Guided Block Play: A Pre-Curriculum In Statistical Literacy, Robert P. Giebitz Nov 2018

Learning Statistics Through Guided Block Play: A Pre-Curriculum In Statistical Literacy, Robert P. Giebitz

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

Learning to use data to investigate the world and make decisions has become an essential skill for all citizens. Play and curiosity are powerful motivators for learning. Inquiry – the process of asking questions and seeking answers – can engage the natural curiosity of young learners and motivate early learning. Recent research in statistics education has shown that children as young as 4 and 5 years old can learn to collect, organize, and interpret data they acquire through observation, counting, and measuring in a process of guided inquiry. Guided block play has been used for over 100 years to enable …

Trying To Cover The Sun With Your Thumb: A Critical Ethnography Of Maternity Care Provision In Rural Northern New Mexico, Abigail Reese Nov 2018

Trying To Cover The Sun With Your Thumb: A Critical Ethnography Of Maternity Care Provision In Rural Northern New Mexico, Abigail Reese

Nursing ETDs

Access to maternity care is disappearing for women across rural America. In the state of New Mexico, women often travel long distances to access hospitals and providers that offer childbirth services, as these resources are concentrated primarily in metropolitan areas. Although data on provider distribution is available, very few studies have explored the maternity care access crisis from the perspectives of the midwives and physicians who work in rural areas. The purpose of this critical ethnographic study was to explore barriers and facilitators to the provision of childbirth services from providers’ perspectives with the intent of informing policy debates around …

Analysis Of Covariance With Heterogeneity Of Regression And A Random Covariate, Christopher J. Mclouth Nov 2018

Analysis Of Covariance With Heterogeneity Of Regression And A Random Covariate, Christopher J. Mclouth

Psychology ETDs

The analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) is a statistical technique originally developed by Fisher (1932) to increase the precision of the estimate of a treatment effect in experimental data. It is used when researchers have both qualitative and quantitative predictors of a continuous outcome. ANCOVA’s most basic assumptions are similar to those of analysis of variance (ANOVA) and other related linear models, but also include an additional assumption regarding the regression line relating the outcome and the covariate. This assumption, referred to as homogeneity of regression, requires that the within-group regression slopes be the same for all groups. Typically, one also …

Maternal Sexuality During Lactation: The Influence Of Breastfeeding Recency And Relationship Quality, Melissa A. Eaton Nov 2018

Maternal Sexuality During Lactation: The Influence Of Breastfeeding Recency And Relationship Quality, Melissa A. Eaton

Psychology ETDs

Introduction. During lactation, breastfeeders report reduced sexual desire and sexual activity (Von Sydow, 1999). Yet research has not examined the direct impact of suckling on sexuality during lactation. This study looked at breastfeeders, immediately following breastfeeding and several hours later, to determine if the recency of infant suckling influences maternal sexuality. Sexual motivations were also compared between breastfeeders and other mothers. Methods. Mothers of infants between 2 and 7 months of age participated in the repeated measures study online. Participants were randomly assigned to the order of their sessions and participated 20 minutes after breastfeeding or 120 minutes after …

Race, Disability And The Possibilities Of Radical Agency: Toward A Political Philosophy Of Decolonial Critical Hermeneutics In Latinx Discrit, Alexis C. Padilla

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

The present dissertation is a non-empirical methodology project grounded in political philosophy. As a practical exercise, it bridges knowledge workers (e.g., educators, action researchers and other engaged scholars) with activists to explore the situated emancipation possibilities of radical agency at the intersection of blindness and Latinidad. It does so in line with DisCrit and other bodies of literature within critical disability studies, works centered on trans-Latinidades and border-crossing, intersectional decoloniality theorizing, critical hermeneutics, critical race theory and blackness/ whiteness studies. It interrogates performative and movement building spaces for teaching and learning that foster radical exteriority trajectories of decolonial solidarity and …

ABSTRACT

In counseling ethics and standards, there is a call to integrate practices and for practitioners to become more aware of other cultures and traditions (Sue, Arrendondo, & McDavis, 1992; Ratts, Singh, Butler, Nassar-McMillan, & McCullough, 2015). Very little research exists that addresses when the Western mental health practitioner and the traditional healer are …

What About Students’ Experiences: (Re)Imagining Success Through Photovoice At A High-Achieving Urban “No-Excuses” Charter School, L. Trenton S. Marsh Nov 2018

What About Students’ Experiences: (Re)Imagining Success Through Photovoice At A High-Achieving Urban “No-Excuses” Charter School, L. Trenton S. Marsh

Intersections: Critical Issues in Education

The article highlights the use of photovoice, a method that gives power to creators of images to capture experiences that are central to their life. Students verbal considerations of success in the context of the “no-excuses” school is included, as is a sample of students’ visual data about what success is outside of the “no-excuses” context. The study reveals the “no-excuses” orientation fosters an oppressive definition of success in the context of classrooms. However, the photovoice component reveals students are able to resist the limited view as four emergent findings reveal how students make meaning of success: (1) human connection; …

The Sponge Theory: Introducing A New Interpersonal Communication Theory, Ben Brandley Nov 2018

The Sponge Theory: Introducing A New Interpersonal Communication Theory, Ben Brandley

Shared Knowledge Conference

Abstract Law enforcement is an extremely stressful career. In exploration of the influence of career stress on law enforcement officers’ relationships, data was collected from eighteen in-depth interviews and ninety hours of participant observation with American peace officers. The results of this research found that while all of the officers admitted to the omnipresent nature of their career stress, the majority of them repeatedly devalued the impact of present or potential detriments caused by that stress. For example, they often invalidated emotions through jadedness and dark humor, challenged the stance that their organizational culture is harmful (e.g. many officers undermined …

Hydroelectric Management On The Rio Chama: Balancing Competing Ecological Priorities, Suzanne Stradling Nov 2018

Hydroelectric Management On The Rio Chama: Balancing Competing Ecological Priorities, Suzanne Stradling

Shared Knowledge Conference

Management of dammed river systems is a complex problem. Spatial and temporal impacts result in complex system trade-offs, and shareholders have competing objectives. Dynamic modeling can provide improved information as decision-makers attempt to optimize the value of river flows. This research models the direct and indirect economic impacts of a small reservoir-dam-river system and applies this framework to an existing Bureau of Reclamation dam and generator in the upper Rio Grande basin. Over past decades, concerns for river habitat preservation have reduced the production of peak-demand energy from hydroelectric plants. Over the same period, as U.S. power markets incorporate solar …

Vecinidad And Hispanidad: Using Consumer Relationships To Understand Local And Regional Hispanic Identity In Nineteenth Century Territorial New Mexico, Erin N. Hegberg

Shared Knowledge Conference

The years 1821–1912 were politically tumultuous and may have been especially important in the development of modern Hispanic identity in New Mexico. After New Mexico was annexed by the United States, one significant impact of incoming American racial discourses was a shift in the perception of Hispanic identity from a localized community identity, to a racial or ethnic identity at a regional or national scale. However, we have little understanding of what this meant in the lives of typical rural New Mexicans. This research addresses this problem through the study the material goods that historic New Mexicans consumed on a …

Associations Among Impulsivity, Adverse Childhood Experiences, And Desirability Of First Sexual Experience On Substance Use And Sexual Risk Taking In Justice-Involved Male Adolescents, Ryan S. Ross, Elizabeth A. Yeater, Gabriela Lopez, Kristen N. Vitek, Angela D. Bryan Nov 2018

Associations Among Impulsivity, Adverse Childhood Experiences, And Desirability Of First Sexual Experience On Substance Use And Sexual Risk Taking In Justice-Involved Male Adolescents, Ryan S. Ross, Elizabeth A. Yeater, Gabriela Lopez, Kristen N. Vitek, Angela D. Bryan

Shared Knowledge Conference

Adolescent substance use is a serious public health problem (Johnston et al., 2016). Notably in adolescents, adverse childhood experiences including unwanted sexual experiences (Wills et al., 2001; Negriff, Schneiderman, & Trickett, 2015) and impulsive sensation seeking (impulsivity) (Donohew et al., 2000; Fernández-Artamendi et al., 2016) are linked to adolescent substance use and high-risk sexual behaviors. Research also suggests delinquent youths are particularly vulnerable to substance use disorders and sexually risky behaviors (Pinto et al., 2015). Given the health consequences of both prolonged substance abuse and risky sexual behaviors, identifying additional risk factors is critical to help inform interventions for high-risk …

A Rural New Mexico Village's Perspectives Of Local Problems, Strengths And Solutions: Asset Mapping And Issue Prioritization For Community Development, Rita Y. Martinez

Shared Knowledge Conference

Understanding community perspectives regarding local needs, problems and assets is an important step towards community development. Needs assessments help identify gaps in public policies and/or available public services, such as public utilities, public safety, education, housing, health, and transportation, as well as asses the local/regional economy that affect the quality of life of residents. Assessment data helps to inform the development of useful interventions and data informed decision-making processes that can later be evaluated for their effectiveness and/or to make improvements and adjustments to public policies, and local initiatives to reach community goals. In rural communities, needs assessments can help …

Viability Of Zero-Based Budgeting Methods In The City Of Albuquerque, Justin P. O'Shea Nov 2018

Viability Of Zero-Based Budgeting Methods In The City Of Albuquerque, Justin P. O'Shea

Shared Knowledge Conference

This project’s objective is to study and propose an alternative budgeting method for use by the City of Albuquerque’s municipal government. Zero-base budgeting (ZBB) is a modern government budgeting process that allocates funds starting from a base of zero for operating units and requires annual justification of all resource and service items in the budget. Although traditional ZBB is rare in practice, local and state governments in the United States are starting to utilize elements of ZBB and are incorporating ZBB methods into their current budgeting process. Interannual variability in economic standing and resultant municipal revenues has prompted the City …

Planning For Protest: The Spatial Dimensions Of Civil Resistance Movements In Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Nora Lamm Nov 2018

Planning For Protest: The Spatial Dimensions Of Civil Resistance Movements In Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Nora Lamm

Shared Knowledge Conference

This research project seeks to better understand how protests of varying sizes take place in public spaces, focusing on the city of Rio de Janeiro. The relationship between cities and protests has increasingly gained importance as urban areas throughout the world become epicenters for demanding greater political rights and expanded notions of citizenship (Harvey, 2003) (Vicino, 2017). Understanding the dynamics of protest in Rio de Janeiro is particularly important now as the city struggles to overcome a financial crisis following nearly a decade of hosting international mega-events including the 2016 Olympics. Unstable funding has led to a public security crisis …

"Sounding The Nile" In Nubian Musical Expression, Regan L. Homeyer Nov 2018

"Sounding The Nile" In Nubian Musical Expression, Regan L. Homeyer

Shared Knowledge Conference

Nubians are indigenous peoples of the Nile River Valley whose ancient civilization parallels that of ancient Egypt. In 1964, 50,000 Egyptian Nubians were removed from their homeland along the Nile because of President Gamal Abdel Nasser’s initiative, the Aswan High Dam Project. With fertile lands and sacred temples doomed to inundation by the waters of what is now Lake Nassar, Nubians were resettled in government built villages that promised both preservation of culture and modern conveniences. What these riverine people received, in fact, were poorly constructed, unfinished dwellings located in the desert, more than five miles from the Nile. A …

The Spatialization Of Peace Amidst Militarization And Development In Buenaventura, Colombia., Maria Del Pilar File-Muriel

Shared Knowledge Conference

Innovative community driven spatial practices are integral to sustaining long lasting peace amidst post-peace-accords times and the continued structural genocide of Afro-Colombians and indigenous communities in Buenaventura, Colombia. This paper illuminates the case of multiple transformative spaces --the Humanitarian Space Puente Nayero and the Comunal Port Punta Icaco in the city of Buenaventura, the rural interethnic humanitarian and biodiversity space of La Esperanza and the Paro Cívico struggle in the district of Buenaventura-- as examples of the creative power of citizens and of the transformative production of spaces of peace that resist local and global violent development and urbanization processes. …

Temporal Information Guides Prefrontal Preparatory Activity, Jacqueline R. Janowich Nov 2018

Temporal Information Guides Prefrontal Preparatory Activity, Jacqueline R. Janowich

Shared Knowledge Conference

Proactive preparation for an upcoming goal differs from last-minute reactive adaptation, but it is unclear how preparatory mechanisms change based on when in the future a goal needs to be executed. To assess how timing information is integrated into preparatory control, we designed a novel variant of the Dot Pattern Expectancy task, where each cue signaled both task rule and delay duration (known short, known long, or unknown) between cue and probe. We recorded EEG while healthy young adult participants (n=36) performed this task, and found that delay demands elicited distinct prefrontal preparatory activities. Medial prefrontal amplitude was sensitive to …

The Effectiveness Of Albuquerque's "There Is No Poop Fairy" Campaign, Sergio Lozoya Nov 2018

The Effectiveness Of Albuquerque's "There Is No Poop Fairy" Campaign, Sergio Lozoya

Shared Knowledge Conference

This research seeks to understand the effectiveness of the There is no Poop Fairy campaign through a public survey of dog owners. The There Is No Poop Fairy campaign was initiated in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 2014, with the goal of getting dog owners to pick up and properly dispose of their dogs’ waste. The Rio Grande is contaminated with E. coli bacteria that originates in part from dog waste, which is carried to the river through storm water. Levels of E. coli in the Rio Grande have decreased dramatically within the past few years, coincident with the campaign. The …

A Sociophonetic Analysis Of Albuquerque Drag Queens, Lindsay Morrone Nov 2018

A Sociophonetic Analysis Of Albuquerque Drag Queens, Lindsay Morrone

Shared Knowledge Conference

Although anyone can be assumed to engage in style-shifting to construct a persona (e.g. Podesva 2007b, Eckert 2008), in the case of drag performers it can be argued that style-shifting results not in an alternate persona but in a performative identity. With this hypothesis in mind, this case study uses a style-shifting paradigm to explore the varying social meanings of phonation type and vowel quality in the construction of a drag queen identity. The speech of two gay male Hispanic drag queens (DQs) from Albuquerque, New Mexico (ABQ) was investigated in various speech situations to identify social meanings indexed by …
