Finding and evaluating existing open educational resources (OER) offer particular challenges to faculty and librarians. The OER discovery process is distributed across several repositories and search engines. OER searches tend to include a variety of different learning objects presented in a wide range of formats, which can be difficult to evaluate and compare.

The University of Idaho Law Library houses a collection of ~10,000 (and growing) digital records and briefs from the Idaho State Supreme Court, but this unique resource had a difficult time finding a user and staff friendly home. This lightning talk will address how our library has adjusted the book gallery feature of Digital Commons (DC) to house this collection in an attractive, accessible manner. Attendees will learn about our successful and less successful tweaks to the DC framework and will be encouraged to adapt our experience to their own unusual collections.

What to do when designing a repository for an institution that doesn’t already have a predefined structure or taxonomy by which to organize or make ‘browsable’ your collections? Conference attendees who come from complex institutions without clearly set “Departments” will be interested to hear how Providence St Joseph Health (PSJH) created an organizational structure and taxonomy during the implementation of their Digital Commons IR. By considering existing classification schemes (LC and NLM), internal naming practices, and consulting small stakeholder focus groups PSJH is making their publications easily browsable by both internal and potential external users.

The Orbis Cascade Alliance’s move to standardize metadata across institutions will greatly enhance our ability to share digital collections across the Alliance and beyond. Perhaps no other fields, though, cause more consternation and confusion than the pair of rights statements required by the Alliance and the Digital Public Library of America.

This presentation will describe the work done by the Alliance's Dublin Core Best Practices Working Group to help member institutions assign standardized rights statements. Examples and explanations of why certain choices were made for both the url and free text statement will also be provided.

In April 2018, the UC Berkeley Library launched a campus-wide OER publishing platform to provide faculty, staff, and students with a simple and centralized portal for creating and finding OERs and other online works. ResearchGate’s recent legal woes regarding publishing giants like Elsevier and American Chemical Society have caught the attention of academic authors, giving open access champions a unique opportunity to engage with University researchers and scientists. This session will describe a workshop for authors’ rights training that incorporates ResearchGate into discussions of copyright (including the use of SHERPA/RoMEO), licensing and copyright transfer negotiation. The University of the Pacific started an institutional repository, Scholarly Commons, at the end of 2016. Prior to this, theses/dissertations (T/Ds) had been submitted to ProQuest starting in 1960 and prior to that the University collected print copies in the Library starting in 1912. The print collection of T/Ds at Pacific was 3,188 in December 2016.

The goals starting in 2017 were as follows

  1. Duplicate all current ProQuest ETDs in to the IR with restricted access
  2. Set up the ProQuest submission form moving forwards to gain permission from students to upload to the IR

At Reed College, every student must complete a year-long thesis project and deposit a print copy of their final thesis in the Library. Though a descriptive catalog record (title, author, advisor, and department) exists for each of these 17,000 theses, students and faculty have trouble discovering relevant theses and tracking the evolution of previous research projects. An electronic theses collection does exist, but participation is voluntary and deposit rates low. This presentation will share the stories of 23 student mothers enrolled in two community colleges. In their own words student mothers described their intersecting identities as both invisible and empowering. Findings from the study point to the resiliency of student mothers who utilized personal assets and institutional resources. Recommendations for community colleges include developing a strategic method to gather data to better serve this student population. Further, institutions are encouraged to re-examine child care services and supports on campus.

The purpose of this research is to determine the relationship between remittance income (migrant-dollars sent back home) and its effects on municipal tax revenue generation among municipalities in Mexico. A sharp contrast exists between remittances and own-source municipal tax revenue; remittances constitute a healthy 2% of Mexico’s gross domestic product (GDP) whereas the largest own-source revenue contributes only .2% of GDP (World Bank 2015, OECD 2015). In some instances remittances have been so productive that they have been used to fund local public services among municipalities. Advances in desktop computing, research and theory addressing the geography of crime, and evidence for the efficacy of hotspot policing have resulted in rapid adoption of GIS mapping technology by police agencies. Some of these agencies have gone a step further and now offer access to crime maps for public viewing through their website or linked services. Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common childhood disorder, but its clinical course varies widely. It is unclear why some individuals experience a remission of their ADHD symptoms across development while others have symptoms persist into adulthood. Performance monitoring, which involves the ability to recognize errors and make behavioral adjustments, is one aspect of self-regulation that may contribute to symptom change. Both early (e.g,. error-related negativity, ERN) and later (e.g., error-related positivity, Pe) stages of performance monitoring can be quantified via event-related potentials, which reflect electrical brain activity in response to errors. Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) is a payment for ecosystem services system created under the UN to reduce deforestation and degradation in developing countries. The REDD+ program creates markets for carbon sequestration services where REDD+ buyers are in UN-FCCC Annex 1 countries (developed countries) and sellers are in non-Annex 1 (typically developing countries). About 25% of the world’s forests are community managed (three times as much as private forests) but there is limited knowledge and information on preferences of households in communities with community managed forests toward programs like REDD+.
