Marching Morally Towards Equality: Perspective Of Bishop Richard Allen, Ernest M. Oleksy

The African American's struggle for equality is fraught with contributions from men and women of various ilk. Amongst these early abolitionists were naturalist Benjamin Banneker, freeman orator Frederick Douglass, and Bishop Richard Allen, who is the focus of this paper. Through an analysis of primary and secondary sources, the author takes on the persona of the late Bishop speaking to a community of his fellow African Americans as he comments on timely events and characters and advises the listeners on a reasonable course of action.

As a society's foundational philosophy changes, so, too, will its forms of social control. By using the works of thinkers like Deleuze and Foucault as pivot points, the dynamic nature of social interactions and the agents to mediate those actions shall be investigated. This article includes findings from archival analysis written in a journalistic prose for simplicity of consumption.

With a foundation in philosophy and history, core concepts of sociology and criminology that were initially posited over a century ago are still useful in understanding the workings of today's society. The contributions of Edward A. Ross have helped latter day researchers centralize their studies of polycentric topics by using social control as an omnipresent social fact. By comparing Ross's descriptions of 19th century society and the researcher's descriptions of 21^st century society, a continuous understanding of a heavily pluralistic discipline comes to life.

Criminal Activity Nuisance Ordinances (CANOs) are local laws found in thousands of cities throughout the country which penalize property owners if repeated incidents of criminal activity related to their property occur over a set period of time (typically, 12 months). Nearly 50 cities in Ohio have CANOs, including more than 20 in Northeast Ohio.

Drawing on extensive public records from a sample of Northeast Ohio cities, this report offers a snapshot of CANOs and how they are being used.

Slavic Village Development, Inc., the nonprofit community development corporation in the Slavic Village neighborhood of Cleveland, engaged the Center for Community Planning and Development at Cleveland State University to assist with a revitalization strategy for Fleet Avenue. The study team was charged to work with SVD leaders and the neighborhood’s City Councilman, Tony Brancatelli, to evaluate market opportunities for food production businesses and local retail, and to develop an overall parcel-by-parcel strategy for commercial rehabilitation, and new commercial and housing infill on the street.

As more students experience higher education in distance courses and online degree programs, librarians recognize the importance of their presence in campus learning management systems (LMSs). To provide this important distance support in the most effective way possible, librarians should follow online instructional design best practices. This poster describes one librarian’s experiences collaborating with her eLearning Department to learn about the Quality Matters (QM) program, and the steps she took to apply the QM rubric to her own online learning objects. Critical thinking is characterized by the careful, reflective judgement of ideas as a guide for action. The dispositions and skills of critical thinking share a lot with the ACRL Frameworks’ frame, “Authority is Constructed and Contextual,” which many librarians are already attempting to incorporate into their teaching. Informed by the critical thinking education literature, librarians teaching about authority (even in one-shot library sessions) can encourage critical thinking skills and dispositions, which help students overcome their own flawed thinking and make better decisions. Through the lense of critical librarianship, librarians are becoming increasingly involved in social justice and human rights issues. This poster describes a collaboration between a subject librarian and a faculty member in which students were given an assignment that drew on Public Sphere Pedagogy (PSP). How can Cleveland repopulate? Generally, there are two theories of thought: by focusing on regional economic development, so that people follow jobs; and by focusing on local economic development, particularly in housing and quality of place. Here, jobs follow people.

While the oft-heard question in city building is whether people follow jobs or jobs follow people, recent research suggest it is likely both. Cleveland needs both a jobs strategy and a housing strategy to incur repopulation. Housing Dynamics In Northeast Ohio: Setting The Stage For Resurgence, Thomas E. Bier

The book presents an overview of regional housing dynamics and consequent impacts in Northeast Ohio since the 1940s. Focus is on the city of Cleveland and its host county. Dynamics are examined in terms of supply and demand, population movement, lifespan of buildings, and the influence of government on the choices people have when considering where to live. Impacts include housing decline and abandonment, change in property value, and urban sprawl. Recommendations, centered on tax-base growth sharing, are presented for altering existing dynamics to support Northeast Ohio’s resurgence.

Subsequently or concurrently, Cuyahoga County Council introduced a resolution to support early efforts to collaborate with stakeholders for the purpose of promoting economic development, job creation, job retention, and workforce development around Cleveland Hopkins airport.

The Aerozone Alliance has been organized to create the conditions for an airport city or “aerotropolis” to take shape.

Deaths from opioids, specifically heroin and fentanyl, have been increasing at alarming rates nationally, in Ohio, and in Cuyahoga County. Cleveland.com reports that the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner asserts that “Cuyahoga County is still on pace to far exceed last year's (2016) record number of heroin and fentanyl overdose deaths after seeing an increase in April (2017)”. The Medical Examiner’s Office also reports that there is an increasing number of African American fatalities due to fentanyl. In 2016, 72 of the 544 deaths (13.2%) from heroin and fentanyl were African Americans; in the first quarter of 2017, 31 of 146 …

Through our work in youth advocacy as, respectively, legal and public health professionals, we are all too aware of the high levels of health care fragmentation experienced during pregnancy and postpartum by poor, young mothers of color. Meredith Matone’s research highlights the heightened risk of fragmentation for girls with histories of child welfare involvement. For example, she found that 66.7% of young mothers who had resided in out-of-home placements and who had taken antipsychotic medication prior to becoming pregnant failed to fill prescriptions for antipsychotics in their first postpartum year. This article recounts the literature of the late 1990s and early 2000s, when some librarians, considering the changing form of government information, questioned whether the FDLP would survive in its existing form and recommended FDLP changes that would keep depository libraries engaged as the means of accessing digital government information evolved. In the later 2000s, articles and reports included comprehensive suggestions to the GPO, by and on behalf of library associations, of ways to make depository libraries stronger partners in the FDLP. Although librarians may not realize it, they have many shared goals and values with those who consider themselves “Skeptics.” The presenters of this poster intend to survey a variety of types of librarians who teach patrons how to evaluate sources. The survey will investigate the librarians’ knowledge of concepts in skepticism, awareness of resources available to skeptics, and general attitude towards those who consider themselves skeptics. The poster will synthesize and analyze the results of this survey to reveal where librarians and skeptics align, and how that alignment compares with the attitudes librarians have overall toward the skeptic community.

This report presents an analysis of the economic impact of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s John H. Glenn Research Center (NASA Glenn) during its fiscal year (FY) 2016. It uses an input-output model, which reflects the buy-sell relationships among industries, the household sector, and the government sector in a region, to estimate the effect of NASA Glenn’s spending on the economies of both Northeast Ohio and the state of Ohio.

This model assesses economic impact in terms of growth in total output (sales); value added (output less intermediary goods); household earnings, number of new and supported jobs, and taxes. …
